The Game

Playing Subbuteo is a physical simulation of association football, involving dexterity and skill in flicking the playing figures, which stand on weighted bases, across the tabletop pitch towards the ball.

What makes the game different from most other tabletop sports games are the hundreds of team kits and accessories. While most games feature only two teams (usually "red vs blue" or "white vs black"), Subbuteo has several hundred team designs, almost all represent real teams with the notable exception of comic book legends Melchester Rovers. While there were many famous teams such as Chelsea, Celtic and Barcelona, these were complemented by many unique sides, such as Boston Minutemen, Landskrona, Antwerp, Hartford Bicentennials, Admira Wacker, and even unpainted models. There are also many additional accessories, such as new balls and goals, special figures for free kicks and throw-ins, stands and crowd, linesmen, ball-boys, streakers and policemen, floodlights, TV cameras and even a mini-Her Majesty the Queen to represent the FA Cup.

Subbuteo has more than one competitive circuit, one of which is known by the term sports table football governed by FISTF. In 1992 there was even an attempt to have Subbuteo made an Olympic sport.

still good condition, i think. cant remember what teams, have you search for the box first and find it. I remember that I asked my uncle to help built a table just for the subbuteo pitch.. man, that was cool. I wonder what happen to subbuteo, i guess console games kills it off.

don't think you can find the new Subbuteo sets here in MY, i picked up a set and some accessories when i was down in Singapore.
If you have the old 70's sets with the plastic figures you might not like the new photo image type 2D players they use now.

Ya,nowadays its very hard to get in Malaysia as the Subbuteo scene is not that active over here, kinda sad though becos its the best table soccer game thats available.

i remember when in the late 80's or early 90's i drool over the set on display at Kathy Toys at Jaya Supermarket Sect 14. I use to go there every other nite just to look at the set and wishing that i hv a set at home.

Some sample picts below:

wow, that's a name i haven't heard for ages - Kathy Toys! The Weld branch was where i got most of my stuff as well as MetroJaya i think.

I got my first set in 1978 and i remember we had a Subbuteo tournament in our school - i think 4 or 5 of us had our own sets and between my neighbours we had many a competition.

Thankfully my mum didnt throw away my sets when i went to college but she threw away a lot of my other stuff. Now they are stored neatly in a box in some cupboard. Your pix makes me want to go open up the box and give them a flick around. I bought the sets from SIN as i didnt want my 8 yr old to be playing with my "classic" set so he has his own set to play but unfortunately he prefers his PSP FIFA11 to Subbuteo!

It was the best table football game ever. My neighbour had the Rugby set and now i regret not getting the Cricket set but in 78 i hadnt a clue how to play the game but in 2011 i find myself watching the ICC World Cup and it looks likely that India is going to beat Sri Lankans

well bro,ur prediction came true,India DID beat Sri Lanka! any idea on the TOTO number next week? Haha, just kidding...

Yeah,Before Toys R Us, Kathy's TOys were THE toy shop ppl frequented back then. I remember the displays of M.A.S.K toys, Ninja Turtles, Game n Watch as well as some cheap china made toys were avaialble there n the price is not reli expensive too! I remember i bought a non-tranaformable Voltron made up of Rubber for RM5 only and i had a great time playing it.

And Also a Subbuteo set was majectically displayed near the entrance and everytime i was there i'll stand there for at least 10mins just to look at the fine details of the sets. Wat memories!

Hey everyone just wanted to tell you how glad I stumble upon this thread. I remembered when I was younger I was quite intrigued with the idea of a tabletop soccer game when I saw a feature of it on TV. Never got a set as I couldn't recall the name of the item. I improvised with my own miniature figures that I had at that time but I guess after some time I got bored and forgotten about it. Thankfully after some 20+ years I finally got to know what the name of the tabletop soccer game is and perhaps I might hunt down a set of my own. Thank you helping me realize the name 'Subbuteo'.

well, guys the good news is that the newly launched Subbuteo has hit our shores. Yay! the bad news however is that it's now made by Hasbro. If any of you collect Hasbro stuff you will know what to expect, which isn't very much. i was hoping a British or European company would have taken it over since Subbuteo really fared well in Europe, so we shall see what Hasbro has in store for us.

Currentlg you can see the game and some of the accessories in either Borders (Gardens) or Times (Pavilion) - those are the only two places i have seen them although i was told there was a demo of the game in Bangsar Village a couple of weeks back.

The other bad news is the pricing, i can't remember the original 70's pricing but then as it is now it isn't cheap. RM250 for the basic starter set - 2 teams, pitch, balls and goal posts. Additional teams are RM75 a pop! But so far i haven't seen any of the EPL teams although they are selling an all white strip team which can be modded i suppose.

No need get the starter set.

May be you try asking the distributor directly for the pricing. If the pricing not right you can buy online anytime.

Wanna join the subbuteo club if there is one.

i don't think there is one around now but if you Google you will find the Malaysian rep is in Kuching somewhere.

Must figure out which of the Local Games Stores are keen on plugging the game so i can try out the new version. From what i heard there is a big difference between the ori version and the one from a few years back to this one.

If you don't buy the starter set how are you going to play the game? i would much rather get my own set and control my own destiny than to always have to rely on someone else for a game.

*
so its not mass marketed here, just a selective few who are bringing in and the price! if i remember correctly a starter set only cost about rm1xx like that which includes the items u mentioned. Additional teams cost only rm25 last time, so does a box of goalpost which contains 2 pcs per box bt of cos with the rising cost of material they'll only cost more and more...

No need get the starter set.

May be you try asking the distributor directly for the pricing. If the pricing not right you can buy online anytime.

Wanna join the subbuteo club if there is one.
*
unfortunately bro, the Subbuteo scene over here is nt that active, i bet most still have their old sets but the difficulty of getting additional players and accessories means most may not have complete set anymore...

i still have a set bt i hardly played with it anymore as some of the players legs are already broken...

Actually guys, there is a move to reintroduce Subbuteo back to our living rooms again.

Imagine Games and the guy behind them are bringing them in and i was last told that he is trying to restart the passion again.

There are a few things planned and even talk of the possibility of a league even.

If you go to Times (Bangsar or Pavilion) you will see the official Subbuteo (not the Zeugo ones mind you) teams for LFC, CFC and QPR. Odd selection but if you are fans of those teams you have to get them.

Will update you guys on this thread if i hear more ......

Did Subbuteo get the license officially? I've been seeing a reintroduction in sales, mainly @ Borders Gardens. Haven't seen any marked CFC or LFC, but definitely some that are 'styled' in their colours.

license officially? u mean the right to use the name and colors of football clubs? yes, they did get the license, its that the jerseys are too small to put in any markings. actually u can buy teams like Liverpool, Man U, and even Blackpool separately other than those that comes with the set tat u bought. and yes, names like Liverpool, Manchester United were printed on the box. and they also comes in 2nd and 3rd strip in case everyone is a supporter of a certain team so when u play each other u guys can use alternate colors icon_rolleyes.gif

I first played Subbuteo in late 70s (yeah old dude here but young at heart). There were about 10 of us and we had our own English League with each 'managing' his own fave club. We had loads of fun for about 5 years until one by one moved away to college, etc. I did buy the 1994 USA edition and got a few friends to play. IMO Subbuteo did not take off here cos you need space to play the game. Malaysian homes tend to lack space unlike the West where average house is spacious.

Borders sells the box set as well as individual teams. Yeah I think its RM75 per team. I still have my 1994 set with ptch, fences, footballs, score board, corner kickers, throw in men and 3 teams. However the current pitch and players are totally different from the old editions so I wonder how if it affects control.

I wonder if it will last as I was at Borders @ Curve last Friday and they've removed Subbuteo from display and replacing with Star Wars game and such.

Here's an event that took place 2 weeks back - there may be hope yet for Malaysia to finally embrace Subbuteo. http://waspa-circuit.blogspot.com/2013/12/...n-malaysia.html

If any of you are interested, Hamleys MY, located in the new wing at OneU are having a Subbuteo introduction or "training session"; their actual post from their fB page states:

"Calling all Subbuteo "veterans"!
Come and enjoy our Match Day Fun and let your young ones join our "training sessions" and learn to play the game you grew up with.
#hamleys #subbuteo "

It says the session is from 12-6 pm and even a promise of a mini tournament drool.gif

Hamleys Subbuteo update:

Well, if anyone turned up for the Hamleys Subbuteo promo today, it was a good one but you had to go right on inside the store to find them.

There were two excellent pitches set-up courtesy of the Hartamas Subbuteo Club and of course the game drew up a lot of interest. One little boy who i played with liked the game very much but was rather shocked by the cost of the starter set - The Club edition. So the only chance these kids can play is if stores like Hamleys are willing to support such sessions. My son also finally got to experience playing on a better surface than his bedroom floor which really helps to enhance the playing experience.

I have not played since the early 80's (mucking around with my son doesn't really count as playing tongue.gif ) but trying it out again on that superb pitch really brought back some wonderful memories for me. smile.gif

Now to find that old box of mine with my Subbuteo stuff from the late 70's e hmm.gif

For more info on Subbuteo just look up the Subbuteo Malaysia facebook page that someone had posted up the link in an earlier reply.

Here is hoping that Subbuteo gets to take off again here in MY.

The response was at most, lukewarm at this part of the world. Most doesnt quite understand the rules of the game and most just baulk at the expensive price of a starter set. Anyhow, thanks for the update on the Subbuteo scene bro notworthy.gif

The pitches were not Hamleys, that was from the Hartamas Subbuteo Club. The Club has 6 of those pitches. Awesome playing surfaces! drool.gif They were there to demo the game.

As for the packaging they are indeed two brands as kcmy mentioned - there is the official Subbuteo teams and then there is the other popular brand of Subbuteo-type teams called Zeugo. Subbuteo teams are going for RM69 and Zeugo when i got them from Times was RM75. Figures are noticeably different with surprisingly the Zeugo figures being more like the old Subbuteo figures i grew up with c.1978! They looked much sturdier. If i can remember how to post pix up in the threads i will put up some pix later on.

Oh I get it now. Zeugo men has a flatter base compared to Subbuteo men which is 'deeper' - making it good for curling the player. I didnt have the Zeugo back in 70s and 80s so I cant say if I'll like it over Subbuteo's.

I think Zeugo's set only available recently or earliest during the late 90's. Before that, all the players and accessories were made by Subbuteo itself.

Actually, i will have to compare it again but i think they might be the same or maybe the material maybe slightly different. The trick is the laying of the pitch which is quite difficult to do when you mount it. The Hartamas pitches were made by a frame maker in TTDI, who must be quite an expert as i have seen his handiwork up close.

More updates on the MY Subbuteo scene courtesy of the Hartamas Tigers:

First up, we had Den Mulia, described as one of Asia's best Subbuteo players. rclxms.gif He came to the club and shared some tips with the youngsters as well as the veterans. He is a great guy and a very good ambassador for the game as a whole.

kcmy, i need your help here, would you know how to add a picture to main thread page, i believe you had started up the thread, so would you know how to go about doing this?

This thread needs a catchy pixture to turn heads and there is nothing more striking than a Subbuteo player on green baize cloth pitch!

if u know how to do it, i'll gladly close this for u to open a new one.

Brazil is subbuteo and MU is total soccer..
Total soccer quality is better in term of kit details..
Their bases are differ to each other...total soccer is more stable compare to subbuteo base..cz subbuteo has "bowl" look like base..

thanks, I managed to get mine in Hamleys, 1Utama. The last one there for at least the past 4 months (nobody bought it since I last noticed, and finally bought it. Indeed its pathetic) I wished I had more choices of table soccer brands to look and consider.
