Hello, i am new to this forum so do notify me if i were to place my topic at the wrong place.

I have been considering to purchase this laptop since my budget is somewhere around rm3000 and after done some extensive research i have concluded that this may be the laptop of my choice. One thing i found out is that from the internet when i do some research on this particular model, there are a few variants like for example there is

Asus ROG GL552JX-DM014H
Asus ROG GL552JX-CN029D
Asus ROG GL552JX-DM120

and so on,
Is it because these laptops are for different regions distributed across the world thus a different model number? Or there is just a slight change in specs in hardware where i overlook which will determine the model number? is it even called model number in the first place LOL. rclxub.gif

One more thing about this laptop, i tried to do some research about it online but i can't seem to find a comprehensive review about this laptop. Therefore decided to take this forum approach and ask here! To those who might have used it, would you recommend it? in terms of is there any major technical flaws that might happen like overheating issue for certain ROG series laptop where it might be too thin, screen flickering, etc etc or maybe some design flaws like keyboards issues, where the spacebar might not be responsive, plastic design of the laptop causing it to slightly more prone to bending when typing, these are just examples. hmm.gif

Thank you for giving your time reading through my queries! any reply or help will be appreciated! smile.gif

Cheers!

Asus ROG GL552JX-DM014H
Asus ROG GL552JX-CN029D
Asus ROG GL552JX-DM120

Hmmm.. Malaysia only got DM014H and DM174H afaik...

And yeah... difference in number becoz difference in config... There's several reviews about this laptop if you could find them... The most comprehensive one to date is the one by laptopmedia.com... Also in notebookcheck.com (got a translated link)

Yup there is screen flickering issue as seen in laptopmedia review, but the screen used is Samsung but mine (M'sia model) has AUO screen..
Cooling I think is good based on some reviews... Don't judge cooling solely by looking at Prime and Furmark test because they are not reflecting day2day operation..

Keyboard I can say is awesome.. typing is very responsive and comfort even.. in long time... and the plastic used is high quality one... if use aluminium the you cannot get this price huhu..

Prime and furmark gives us an idea of its cooling. Take off around 7 to 8 mayb 10 degrees of the highest temp would be the temp when gaming. If light uses it will be around 50 to 60 which is reasonable.

ASUS ROG GL552 review – it looks like a ROG notebook, but it doesn’t feel like one
The GL552 comes with a budget hardware – it can be found with dual-core Core i5 or quad-core Core i7 CPU and with the newly announced GeForce GTX 950M (2GB DDR3 or 2GB GDDR5) GPU with the DDR3 version being significantly cheaper. To be honest, it’s really hard to say that this GPU will satisfy most gamers, but the “casuals” (as some like to call themselves) will be able to play some more demanding games with settings turned down a notch. we start off with 100% CPU load to see how the internals handle the rise of temperature and if any throttling occurs. The tested unit here has Core i7-4720HQ CPU that reached temperatures of around 45°C when ticking at normal state. When we turned the load up to 100%, the cores went as high as 79-81°C which is far from the maximum operating temperature of 100°C.

for your information, i would say if you really want to pay the cheap price for gaming laptop. Also, theres a friend of my, she studied in Australia, now is winter. she mentioned her G551 is really helpful during this season. if you want to keep warm may be you can choose ASUS. it can keep you warm during the winter. XD not bad. btw, their customer service is the MOST popular topic in forum. nearly 99.9% knows their customer services are really bad.

Just got mine the other day and the best way to describe it for me is it's decent. A good laptop with a few flaws here and there. It's mostly made of plastic (fingerprint magnet) and the top cover of the laptop (not the metal part) scratches pretty easily.

The screen does a good job of not glaring and the colours are nice but not perfect until you calibrate the colours yourself.

The keyboard is fine. Comfortable and sturdy. Also, adjustable sexy red backlighting and a bunch of useful function key functions. The gestures for the clickpad (with the drivers) work great but man clicking with it just sucks (left and right clickpad).

Alright, the CPU and GPU. I have not tried any of the resource heavy games like Battlefield or Crysis but the performance I've been getting for other games (LoL, osu!, some fps games) has been great so far. The i7 definitely runs like an i7.

On the temperature side, it does get a bit warm (but definitely not too hot) Around 80°C for the motherboard, 70°C for the CPU and the coolest was the GPU at around 65°C/under 70° (during heavy load). The fan runs quietly too, like really quiet.

The battery life, the HDD. When strictly not gaming/no media playing on Intel Graphics + power saver mode, it can last for about maybe 5 hours, 3 hours or so on the GTX 950m (ddr3). Personally, constant usage of the CPU or GPU like copying files or gaming on the GPU lasted me less than 1.5 hours. Kinda lame but it's to be expected from a 4 cell battery. The 1 TB HDD (5400 RPM) is okay overall, nothing special. Mine was pretty sluggish until I reinstalled everything from scratch.

Last but not least, the sounds. The laptop is running with Conexant drivers instead of the commonly used Realtek. It sounds great with my cheap headphones and just decent without them. Had to send my GL552 back for maintenance cause the left speaker was crackling and stuff at around 60% volume so I would really recommend those getting this baby to blast the sounds on the spot when buying.

And I'm done here smile.gif

Can't really give too much detail about my (GL552JX-DM174H) screen model cause I sent it for repairs but I did not notice any flickering at max or lower brightness levels. But just to be safe, you should probably check out the model for yourself nod.gif

Gave my laptop back to the shop a week before raya and just got it back this week. 2 weeks total. Aaand the speaker is still crackling.. but it doesn't vibrate like before (jittering, vibrating sound like that).

Honestly have no idea what they did with it. I asked the seller if they changed my motherboard cause my OS was reinstalled (they did a backup of my stuff) and there was a different BIOS logo (ASUS and Intel instead of just ASUS) but he said no, only reinstalled my OS and my speaker (maybe?). I don't even know anymore. Can't send it back again for now cause I need it for work and stuff.

I also went to the ROG forum and asked if anyone with the GL552 was having the same issue and a guy said no, nothing like it. Think it might be a hardware issue on my end. My only choice right now is to either send it back again and hope for the best or bring out some cash and ask them to replace my MOBO/speaker/something yawn.gif
