Please use this thread or post a new thread.

Anyway, for your question, you have to boot from the RH cd and choose the right hdd to install it.

Wine. What you are looking for is Wine. Take a look at http://www.winehq.com. It's a windows application compatibility layer.

Extract from www.winehq.com:
Think of Wine as a compatibility layer for running Windows programs. Wine does not require Microsoft Windows, as it is a completely free alternative implementation of the Windows API consisting of 100% non-Microsoft code, however Wine can optionally use native Windows DLLs if they are available. Wine provides both a development toolkit for porting Windows source code to Unix as well as a program loader, allowing many unmodified Windows programs to run on x86-based Unixes, including Linux, FreeBSD, Mac OS X, and Solaris.

Anyway...

While you *can* use kTorrent in Linux, it's not as good. It's not as feature-rich as Azureus and uTorrent. For more info, take a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent_client

Yeah, sure Azureus works fine in Linux. However, like all Java applications, Azureus is bloatware, or almost there anyway. Azureus may be the most feature rich Bittorrent client I've ever come across, but it cannot beat uTorrent at low memory and CPU footprint. When you want to do many things at the same time with limited resources on your computer, you tend to want applications which can accomplish the same thing while eating less resources.

Right-click your Dekstop Computer and select New > Shortcut from the drop down menu...

Type in the console command which you are using to fire up the azureus...

Since you're not sure of the version, I think it's best that you go grab a copy of Ubuntu 7.10 tomorrow and try again.

I use Ubuntu 7.04 and Debian Etch (still newbie) and the installation did not require any special codes. Anyway, you are guided through the installation.

If you just want to have an idea of what it's like, you can always download a LiveCD e.g. Ubuntu. You can run it off the CD and will not mess any current installation you have. If you are really adventurous, then you can always dual-boot or even tri-boot!

If you have problems after installation, Uncle Google is always there to help you.

Debian - http://www.debian.org/

I think we should encourage more ppls to go open source way, with the latest development in the open source world, many distros are offering the system on par if not batter then the popular(read controlled) one.
To me I dont find anything less in open sources operating system, saved only for a few advance and memory sapping games.
Whatever task we want to do in our computer, we can do it all with open sources.
It is time we take control our machine and communicating with them instead of just using it without knowing the processes behind , and the result is of course knowledgeable products.

Ok, i own an Intel Mac (Tiger 10.4.4) and i want to dual boot Linux on it. I'm not entirely sure if Boot Camp would work fine as i've received mixed feedback from other users. Some explanation and clarification would be much appreciated. I'm planning to get Ubuntu smile.gif

You either dual boot or you can run it in Parallel VM.

I recommend dual boot with rEFIt because it's much faster & you can have desktop effects which is not possible in Parallel.

I've never heard of a hybrid, but it's possible to install X.org in MacOS X and run most X apps in it, if that's what u r talking about.

My suggestion is either one of this (if it's your first time venturing into GNU/Linux):

1. Ubuntu Linux

2. Linux Mint

3. openSUSE

Most of your proprietary hardware drivers and multimedia codecs will work out-of-the-box with the above distros. Same goes with your local network and internet connection. Information of the package contents and screenshots can be found here:

you can install ubuntu in windows like ordinary windows software.
just insert ubuntu cd into ur cd drive then follow on screen instruction.
to uninstall it, use add or remove in control panel. thumbup.gif
ubuntu also automatically detect windows installed on hdd for dual boot installation.

Deluge by far is the fastest (thus making it the best in my opinion) torrent client I've ever used, and I also like it so far.

My only gripe with it is that it causes quite some slowdown on the connection while surfing, but that's not severe enough for me to not call it a trivial matter. biggrin.gif

Debian 6.0 “Squeeze” frozen

In this very moment, during the ongoing annual Debian Developer
Conference “Debconf10″ in New York, Debian’s release managers have
announced a major step in the development cycle of the upcoming stable release Debian 6.0 “Squeeze”: Debian “Squeeze” has now been frozen.

In consequence this means that no more new features will be added and
all work will now be concentrated on polishing Debian “Squeeze” to
achieve the quality Debian stable releases are known for.

The upcoming release will use Linux 2.6.32 as its default kernel
in the installer and on all Linux architectures.

New features of the upcoming release include:
* State of the art desktop environments, based on KDE 4.4.5, Gnome
2.30.0, LXDE 0.5.0, XFCE 4.6.2, X.org 7.5, OpenOffice.org 3.2.1
and many other applications.
* Stable and current versions of common server software such as
Apache 2.2.16, PHP 5.3.2, MySQL 5.1.48, PostgreSQL 8.4.4 and Samba
3.4.
* Modern interpreters and compilers for all common languages such as
Python 2.6 and 3.1, Perl 5.10, GHC 6.12 and GCC 4.4.
* DKMS, a framework to generate Linux kernel modules whose sources
do not reside in the Linux kernel source tree.
* Dependency-based ordering of init scripts using insserv, allowing
parallel execution to shorten the time needed to boot the system.

Debian 6.0 “Squeeze” will also be accompied by variants based on the
FreeBSD kernel for amd64 and i386 machines, together with the GNU
libc and userland as a “technology preview”. Users of these versions
however should be warned that the quality of these ports is still
catching up with the outstanding high quality of our Linux ports,
and that some advanced desktop features are not supported yet.
However, the support of common server software is strong and extends
the features of Linux-based Debian versions by the unique features
known from the BSD world. This is the first time a Linux distribution
has been extended to also allow use of a non-Linux kernel.

Further work
————
A number of bug squashing parties will be organized before the new
distribution is released in order to classify and fix the remaining
known problems in the new distribution. As the set of features has now
been finalized for “Squeeze”, developers can now begin to create
documentation such as release notes and the installation guide.
Interested users and developers are invited to join the #debian-bugs IRC
channel on irc.debian.org and help with these efforts or test out
pre-release versions of “Squeeze”. To support more users, the Debian
project also asks for help with translating the new documentation to as
many languages as possible.

About Debian
————

The Debian Project was founded in 1993 by Ian Murdock to be a truly
free, community project. Since then the project has grown to be one of
the largest and most influential open source projects. Over three
thousand volunteers from all over the world work together to create and
maintain Debian software. Translated into over 30 languages, and
supporting a huge range of computer types, Debian calls itself the
“universal operating system”.

^Good news for millions of servers around the world.

No difference for me, though.
Personally, I wish they froze it later, with kernel 2.6.33... that way, people with SSD drives could get TRIM support by default.

Doesn't really matter since I prefer using Unstable sources with Zen or Liquorix based kernels (or self compiled ones)

Currently I am using Gimp and ufRaw which of course is not eual replacement of photoshop but most of the basic post processing features is there. Thats all I need. You can download the software from Ubuntu Software center and it will install automatically. I also download Picasa for web album.

drivers for most Linux distro stuff works on the kernel level, meaning it is irrelevant what distro you run on as long as the kernel you have for it works with your stuff - which is why most stuff work in most linux distros out of the box.

you'll have to dig into the kernel to understand how it works and then, separately, understand how OSX's ones work. you can't just be good, you have to be an expert to be able to tell the difference between the ways osx and the linux kernel handles drivers, and translate that into the way OSX's works. if there's no implemented method to properly "translate" that, then you're basically at a moot point until either gets a way for one. VGAs with proprietary drivers are an exception though, but they usually manage to cater to different OS users by writing drivers for every single different OS. like there's drivers for both Windows and Linux, no problem there.

by the way I guess there is no need to port VGA drivers' into os x as I believe most of them are already provided by its respective VGA card makers. i might be wrong based on a recent googling, plus I don't use macs that often even though I have one in office (office property yo), and even then that uses intel graphics not some bombastic ones like ATI and NVIDIA whistling.gif

you can use either depending on your laptop. if you feel you need it to be light you can go for netbook edition.

as for me, I'm using the desktop edition since my work tends to border towards the power-user side. sweat.gif

Are you meaning that press Additonal Driver there, then install the driver ? If you saying that i have already install the driver.Just cannot enable it,after i press the switch turn on/off.

Added on December 4, 2010, 11:27 pmI say again my question
Problem now is wireless driver is already installed and activated, but the wireless icon on desktop display that "wireless is disabled".So i cannot search any local area wifi.
Example like : At Windows XP my wireless driver already installed and activated, but at control panel>network connections>wireless network has been disabled(this is just a sample to show my question only, pls dont misunderstanding)
So how can i enabled my wireless network in Ubuntu OS.

Looks like your machine is running AMD processor 64-bit
You should choose to download the distro based on it's architecture as kernel is compiled based on it
so AMD 64 it is

Yeah you gonna have to download xfce's package. Normally the best way would be to be something along the lines of
CODE
~$sudo apt-get install xfce

I assume thats the package in the repository but I can't be sure.

If you are going to download into a CC machine, you have to download the source from the xfce website and take it back to you computer and compile it. I suggest you download the dependencies found on the website before you start compiling.

Once you have installed it, its just a matter of getting your login manager to point to the correct window manager.

Yup, sure looks like the source. The only thing you can do now is go into each tarball and extract and compile each component.

Buiding from source is very painful but a educational experience. That being said, don't forget the dependencies or else each time you compile a part you will suffer.

Egads, Farkinid, you are making that poor guy compile a whole DE? whistling.gif

Considering it's Debian, XFCE should already be available in the repositories...

You can configure Synaptic (should already be in a stock Debian installation I think, else use the apt-get method) to generate a list of files you can download. Here's a quick run-down on how:

QUOTE(Synaptic method)
1. Open Synaptic.

2. Search for the "xfce" package.

3. Right click on it and select "Mark for Installation."

4. Go to File > Generate Download Script. You can save it as anything in anywhere (best saved as a .txt in a pendrive).

5. What will be generated is a text file containing the lines "wget -c (there will be an URL here)". You can ignore the "wget -c" in the text file if you wish, and load up all the URLs in your download manager or something (IDM does the job nicely if your CC allows installing it).

6. You can just straight up use Synaptic to add the downloaded packages (File > Add Downloaded Packages) and proceed to installation.
As for the apt-get method:

QUOTE(apt-get method)
1. Open up the terminal.

2. Do this:

CODE
`apt-get install xfce --yes --print-uris | grep -i http` > [any file name as long as you remember].txt

in the terminal and copy it into your pendrive. This file will contain links to download the necessary files. You can try loading it up in IDM if your CC allows it, or just do it one-by-one if you can't - considering you're trying to install Xfce, having a download manager will really be helpful.

3. After you've downloaded the files (on a pendrive), open it in your Debian PC, copy all the files off into "/var/cache/apt/archives/" (as root). Then in the terminal, proceed with "apt-get install xfce" (as root).

There. Quite tedious, but should be a bit more comfortable than having to download the source tarballs elsewhere, and compile it from scratch. tongue.gif

Actually.... the only reason he has to do this is because his computer has little to no intahwebs connection. So he is stuck with the manual way. Download from somewhere and then install

Then, I think he can use this to simplify things
CODE

# tar -xzvf xfce-4.10.tar.bz2
# cd xfce-4.10
# tar -xzvf *.tar.bz2
# for i in `ls`; do if [ -e $i/Makefile ]; then make -C "$i"; fi; done

He should read the README file first to check whether any external packages is required and install the dependencies before build process. If nothing is listed, then the only way I know is to look at the errors.

Hmm this might work unless :-
  • not all components are stored in tar.bz2 files but rather zip and/or tar.bz files
  • some components use cmake instead of make

I'm not use to cmake. sweat.gif
He should examine the directories first (with find, grep etc) and make suitable adjustment to the script.

Sorry for the late response everyone, like I mention before, I have one SLOW AND UNRELIABLE INTERNET CONNECTION.

Regarding Lord Tiki Mick's code, this is the response :
CODE
# tar -xzvf *.tar.bz2

gzip: stdin: not in gzip format
tar: Child returned status 1
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

So, after countless failure (probably due to my lack of Super Cow Powers), I've decided to just go the easy way and try to download and install XFCE through my slow internet........also with no success as terminal greets me with this prompt:

apt-get method:
CODE
# apt-get install xfce
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package xfce

aptitude method:
CODE
# aptitude install xfce4
No candidate version found for xfce4
No candidate version found for xfce4
No packages will be installed, upgraded, or removed.
0 packages upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 0 B of archives. After unpacking 0 B will be used.

Also, forgot to tell that I installed Debian using the CD version (not the DVD), dunno if that helps or not.

(P.S. - Got any fun linux easter egg to share in the meanwhile)

No, it's my fault for giving you an untested script. bzip2 should use 'j' option, not 'z'. It should be like this:
CODE

# tar -xzvf xfce-4.10.tar.bz2
# cd xfce-4.10
# find . -name '*.bz2' -type f -exec tar -xjvf {}
# for i in `ls`; do if [ -e $i/Makefile ]; then make -C "$i"; fi; done

P/s: The last line probably wont work if the tarballs are not using Makefile. :/

For the aptitute method, you should first search xfce pakage name, you do it like so
CODE
apt-cache search xfce

# find . -name '*.bz2' -type f -exec tar -xjvf {}
find: missing argument to '-exec'

Then nothing, It didn't display anything useful.

I'll leave the install script to Lord Tiki Mick.

As for the download from the repo, I'm assuming this is a brand new install. So the first thing you have to do is remove the CD-s as a source of data. The 2nd thing is to point to a correct repository. So use gedit or nano or (if you brave) vi to edit your /etc/apt/source.list

Put a hash in front of any part that says "deb cdrom" and add in an online repository. After you are done, it should look something like this :-
CODE
# deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 6.0.0  _Squeeze_ - Official i386 NETINST Binary-1 <date & time>/ squeeze main

# Singapore
deb http://mirror.nus.edu.sg/Debian Squeeze main non-free contrib
deb-src http://mirror.nus.edu.sg/Debian Squeeze main non-free contrib

# US 6.0
deb deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/Debian squeeze main non-free contrib

The example is what I'm using, although my sources.list have more entries from other repositories. After you have edited the sources.list, run a "apt-get update" and then "apt-cache search xfce". You should see something like my screenshot. Then run "apt-get install xfce4".

HAHA.. woops, my picture highlighted the wrong thing. Its xfce4, a few lines above the highlighted one. Also, use sudo if you have to run the update and install.

ANYONE KNOW THIS :

ROBACUS is a software automation platform that was developed at the Boeing Supercomputing Center by a group of nuclear engineers out of the University of California, Berkeley, in the early 80's.

Today the PC has surpassed the then supercomputers and is beckoning the re-activation of ROBACUS. And ROBACUS has answered this challenge by moving beyond nuclear engineering, into the area of computer intelligence and digital robotics.

ROBACUS has demonstrated its ability to innovate by solving Newton's problem of gravity and deriving Einstein's E=mc**2 equation. And in a contest of IQ's, ROBACUS has showed us how computers go about dealing with typical human IQ riddles.

But all these achievements would be meaningless if they involve complex theories and demand scientific expertise, all to be backed by strenuous thinking on our part. So, this is where ROBACUS has its breakthrough.

ROBACUS' user interface is all in plain English. That's only possible if ROBACUS is made to absorb all the thinking to itself. We essentially have created a digital brain.
Well, what's the use of a brain without action. So, we also engineered some digital robotics to do the work. We have created what we called "software robots". These robots are designed to, someday, perform all the tasks on the computer.

At this point, we are left with one last question:
"Would any school accept a supersmart and hardworking computer as a student?"

I would not say DELUGE is the best, but it is okay. qBittorrent is actually the best I have used so far. qBittorrent is cross-platform, available on many operating systems, including: FreeBSD, Linux, macOS, OS/2, Windows. Some of the features are Bandwidth scheduler, Bind all traffic to a specific interface, Control over torrents, trackers and peers (Torrents queueing and prioritizing and Torrent content selection and prioritizing, Cross-platform: Windows, Linux, macOS, FreeBSD, OS/2, DHT, PeX, encrypted connections, LSD, UPnP, NAT-PMP port forwarding support, µTP, magnet links, private torrents, IP filtering: file types eMule dat, or PeerGuardian, Supports IPv6, but cannot use IPv4 and IPv6 at once[11]

True. It's better to save money and spec your new ThinkPad without any fingerprint reader. If you insist on some sort of scanning for login, I think right now it's better to spec an IR camera option instead when ordering. That way you can use something like Howdy for Windows Hello style facial recognition. That said, the vendors list on LVFS says Synaptics are testing some drivers for Linux, so maybe there's hope for fingerprint readers.
