Hi all, currently i have dillema on my own future career, so i need to hear some opinion for all your guys n girls here.
The problem that i facing now is..i already work in a company for over half year, and what i am doing now and learning now are not popular at the outside market.
So, i worry that what i am working now is not consider as working experience if i hop to other company which doing the different thing. For examples, now i dealing with automotive field, and
if next time i want to go into the software development field. Will the empleyer consider my working experienced.

Who have face this before, mind to share your opinion here..thanks very much

the important of programming doest choose of fields or industry (even tho it help) the important is the use of the programming skill and the logic. Industry you in it just a business logic. If you are good in the programming skill such as Java, .net or VB you can go any industry without problem.

I work for 5 years from automation -> hospital and to financial industry. It doesnt stop from that. Hope this will help.

Thanks for your advice..but then mind to ask that..why u work in automation field for 5 years..and now go for hospital and to financial industry???It is u dislike the automation or feel that, it will not have a bright career or less company within malaysia???
Because what i worry is if stay too long in automation fields, it will make me less explore to other languages. So, it is quite hard to hop to other company which not involve on automation.
Please advice...really blur for future career now..=.=

oppss i mean total of 5 years in automation (2 years), hospital (2years) and finance (1years and current) industry.

hehe... shame of me tongue.gif, it not because of field or the industry... just because getting a better offer from he company tongue.gif SALARY is reason leaving.

you are right that you may less explore to other languages. This 1 you need to explore youself when free time. Just like me, i taking others courses like java, sql and etc certified to imporved yourself.

Sometime we need spend some free time to improved skill. just my 2cents.

Just finished my study may this year and got my first job a month later.
I obtained a degree for electrical engineering majoring in power industrial (2nd class upper)

The job is Tendering Engineer. My company is a Class A turnkey contractor for TNB. My job is to handle tender job for substation construction project.
I just apply this job because my parents said don't be too choosy, just pick any related job so I can gain experience. Actually I'm prefer to work in oil and gas company but I think that I just try this first and hop later on.

But the job is utterly boring. My job is just preparing mandatory documents of equipments, filling technical specification in the tender book, photocopying test reports of equipments for tender submission. That's all.

Now, it almost 6 months and I did the same thing for every new tender that was released by TNB ( 7 tenders so far).

Thing is, I didn't gain much within this timeframe. The pay is ok. But I think, by just doing those stuff, I won't getting nowhere for my future. I prefer being a design engineer or project engineer so I can be a technical person. I tried to change dept. but my boss don't let me.

So how guys? any tendering engineer in here? Are you doing the same thing as mine? Do you hop for another job or just stay? I don't want to waste my time doing all this. I want to be on the right lane.

Working environment is great. Almost zero office politics.

Now I'm still looking for jobs but for the time being, I think I just stay here.

Some people might be happy to have this kind of job since it's quite relaxing plus good salary (for me la). But I think it will affect me in the long run since I will lack of technical skills.

How about your colleague? Did you ask them for opinion?

2 roads for you to walk - the money or the experience.

A friend of mine was in your position once. He had to choose between his interest which was programming and a high paying job as system support. He went for the money and he is liking his job and he slowly learn his programming at home on his own.

Either way, it's fine as long as you have the interest and will to learn.

IT people must have specialization to make good money. Dont be a generalist. Dont try to be an expert in everything. People making big money doing IT job are specialist. Choose a specialization that suits your talent and the prospect (salary) you want.

Specialization that you may want to consider
1) SAP
2) Siebel
3) networking (CCIE perhaps)
4) Oracle experts
5) IBM mainframe experts
6) etc..etc...

Those are the positions where you have good chance of making 5 digits after 5-6 years experience. For me, I'm trying to be number 5. I tried 3 and 4 and I hate them. Not my cup of tea.

Know your talent. Use the talent to be a specialist.

i agree with u ..but ..have how many people can do that or learning by their own??Cause after you back from work already really tired..besides that, self-learning if without any actualy practice also will not affective for the learning....
like what we do on study time..assignment..is practice..
but in real life of working ..it is totally different...:-|

I do my learning. I take nite class and weekend class. Depend you what you aim for.

Even the learning/class is useless (theory) but at least you proved youself are qualify. How do people judge you that you know something. For example they want Java developer and you know java but dont have the certificated? or you have the certificate but u know java (maybe not expert)?

same like driving... even tho you know driving but if you dont have license it useless sure kena saman 1 sweat.gif ! Two must use together. Experience and Learning/Certification.

Not really. If you are really an expert in software development field, I think the company will still employ you. Some of my colleagues work in software field, but when they want to switch to same field, they feel hard to get job also. Employers do consider working experience but during interview, they will test you out, working experience sometime is to make your resume more impressive.

Networking - didnt like it because it quite repetitive for me. Fix the routers and so on. Monitoring the network and pinging here and there to find problems. Sometime a bit laborious (doing the wiring).

Database - it's not really programming and not much chance for me to design solutions for business problems (business objects, back end processing etc).

ermm actually not very great la... i just use my weekend time and nite time to do that. Reduce some entertaiment, reduce some time pak toh kakaka... biggrin.gif Now i am more free cause already finish all tongue.gif

but it cost about 21K for my course havent include book and other material... rafly about 25k total course... did borrow half from family and returning them now tongue.gif (no interest loan) lol

It quite hard for handle, but if u really got desire then u can do it... dont waste your time by doing something not important... do something that benefit your future... i believe who can do it cause u starting to think of future...

Make sure u have financial stability before you take any courses that cost alot money.

edited: me now currently 26 years old. I graduate at 2001 November (degree). Working from 2002 until now. Master graduate at 2006 June tongue.gif
