Badminton - Wikipedia

Badminton is a racquet sport played by either two opposing players (singles) or two opposing pairs (doubles), who take positions on opposite halves of a rectangular court that is divided by a net. Players score points by striking a shuttlecock (also known as a shuttle, bird, or birdy) with their racquet so that it passes over the net and lands in their opponents' half of the court. Each side may only strike the shuttlecock once before it passes over the net. A rally ends once the shuttlecock has struck the floor.

The shuttlecock (or shuttle) is a feathered projectile whose unique aerodynamic properties cause it to fly differently from the balls used in most racquet sports; in particular, the feathers create much higher drag, causing the shuttlecock to decelerate more rapidly than a ball. Shuttlecocks have a much higher top speed, when compared to other racquet sports. Because shuttlecock flight is affected by wind, competitive badminton is played indoors. Badminton is also played outdoors as a casual recreational activity, often as a garden or beach game.

Since 1992, badminton has been an Olympic sport with five events: men's and women's singles, men's and women's doubles, and mixed doubles, in which each pair consists of a man and a woman. At high levels of play, the sport demands excellent fitness: players require aerobic stamina, agility, strength, speed and precision. It is also a technical sport, requiring good motor coordination and the development of sophisticated racquet movements.

Basic Badminton Equipment

Uniform

There are few restrictions on the clothing for badminton matches, but players tend to wear short pants and short-sleeve shirts, with flat-soled training shoes. Older regulations – similar to those in tennis – stipulated that clothing had to be 75 per cent white, but this is no longer a requirement of the modern game.

Shuttlecock

The shuttlecock is made of a small piece of cork, coated with leather and 25 to 28cm wide. On its base are attached 16 natural or synthetic goose feathers, forming a cone. It must be a maximum of 70mm in length and 68mm in width, and should weigh between 4.74 and 5.50 grams.

Racquet

Badminton racquets – like their tennis counterparts – have progressed from simple wooden construction to the use of sophisticated lightweight materials such as aluminium, graphite and titanium. They have a round head containing a rigid mesh of synthetic strings for hitting the shuttlecock, a shaft and a non-slip grip. The head can be a maximum of 23cm wide and 29cm long, while the overall length is a maximum of 68cm. It should weigh between 85 and 100 grams.

The court

Badminton matches are played on a court that is 6.1m wide and 13.4m long, with specific markings for singles and doubles matches. The playing area for singles matches is slightly narrower than the court at a width of 5.18m, while the playing area for doubles matches uses the full court width and length. There must be clearance of 2m on all sides, and a ceiling height of 12m for high shots.

The net

The net in the middle of the court is 76cm wide, and is made of a fine mesh of dark-coloured cord, so that it can be seen through, while remaining visible at all times. At the top of the net is a white strip to clarify its position. The net is held rigid by a pair of posts either side of the court, with its top at a height of 1.55m.

Hi,

I never use VT80 Etune but my friend who very strong in smash said VT80 Etune not suitable for him. Try VZF2 4u (if you play double) instead if you want to stick with voltric. Just my 2 cents.

If quality is your main concern then the better brands do have better quality. To me the brand doesn't really matter. What matters most is the specs of the racquet. smile.gif

hi there , it depend on the player itself . Did you love heavy racket or lighter racket ? Personally i got yonex , apacs , protect , RSL and impact racket brand . ..

If we talk about quality of course yonex will be better among the another 5 brand i have .. But i do suggest you give a try on APACS . with your budget RM 200 to get an apacs racket will be a good choice biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

I think right now you should give a chance for mid heavy racket .. I don't think it give harder smash . For me., it provide a better control of the shuttlecock ..

Maybe should try li ning .. Yonex under rm200 hardly get a very good quality hehehe

low end yonex are as stable as the high end ones. maybe less "tech" included in manufacturing it only. stability pawns apacs hands down, unless u're talking about high end apacs which would have similar stability.

..or maybe it's just me. i can feel the vibration of my AVPs.

There won't be better specs. Just better materials used. The accuracy of the specs will be better with branded ones. For example Apacs do have many racquets with different specs but most of them feel the same. laugh.gif Yonex in the other hand do have a lot of specs as well and you can actually feel the difference. smile.gif

Hi guys,

I have ProKennex racket aged more than 20 years (dont know exact model name).
It has full alloy frame (not alloy finish or paint).

My question is what is the max tension that this full alloy frame can hold?

Most stringers said 18lbs is max. But i see the frame is very flexible and strong. Hit wall and marble few times and survived.

Do you think full alloy frame can hold 24lbs tension?

I attached pic if anyone can recognize it.

Thanks,

Thanks,

Thanks,
Most shop I asked only dare to string up to 18lbs, only 1 shop said can do 20lbs.
Currently strung BG65 which is thicker.
So I guess depends on how skilful the stringer.

Alloy might be not as strong as carbon/graphite but it is not fragile and more flexible.
My brain said 22lbs shouldn't have a problem.

23 lbs to be safe & longevity. As long frame is symmetrically even & no warp. Enjoy the racket whilst it lasts thumbup.gif

Hey there, to all sifu and cockers.
I wanna buy a high end racquet for my father as its for his birthday (he deserves it)

I drop down choice between li ning n90iii or n55iii.
More keen towards the n90iii. I was shocked the price was 1k on sportsclick.com.my.
Any recommended shops to buy an original li ning racquet, I'm staying at pj area.
A lot of shops in the 1st page and I'm not sure which shall I go to.

(Inb4 vzf2LD is way cheaper.. I know)

Go tested this MBC for 2.5 hours, got 3 row of courts, each row 3 courts, so total is 9 courts, each court also got ample space to put your badminton bag and sit; a bit high class compare with Ipoh others badminton hall, then the price also high class, RM25/26 per hours, now Ipoh others rubber courts is around RM15-17/hours yet still only got 80%-90% booking rate at the peak hours night session, wonder this MBC can get 40%-50% booking rate or not.

Now the cheap MBI courts got some improvement also, all those not function fluorescent light have been replaced with new one for every court! flex.gif

Previously was talking about getting a Yonex Z-speed to replace my BS10, finally i got it!! and I was only able to get used to it after 4 sessions, and broke a string. Damn, this racket is really hard to tame like mentioned in reviews from internet.
Alot of mishit, timing is very different from bs10, the small frame does have some effect, maybe because of my skill. sad.gif
After get used to the timing and lower the string tension, very good! fast and power enough, front court control, net shot and kill are good. I seldom do back court power smash, and not good at it, but i do feel improvement. and the hitting sound is good!

Hi, my shoes is having premature sole wear. Attached photo is my shoe after only 2 sessions, and I had the same thing with my previous Apacs shoes bought 2 years ago.

On top of that the stitching on top near the toes is already coming out (not pictured). Are our shoes really dropping in quality or am I just unlucky or am I buying from the wrong places?

Hi, my shoes is having premature sole wear. Attached photo is my shoe after only 2 sessions, and I had the same thing with my previous Apacs shoes bought 2 years ago.

On top of that the stitching on top near the toes is already coming out (not pictured). Are our shoes really dropping in quality or am I just unlucky or am I buying from the wrong places?

old shoes/expiring shoes.. happened to me before.. never buy old stock for cheap price..

you are fat with poor foot step and play on cement or new rubber badminton court?   hmm.gif
*
Im not fat/overweight, I play at Sunway South Quay. If poor foot step but my other shoe is not affected? Only my two latest pairs have this problem, the pair before it had no premature wear at all

I've asked my brother and another long-time badminton player friend and they say its normal because 'things today arent made to last'. shakehead.gif

Now inside my racket bag got 1 YY VT5 (26lbs) 1 YY VT5 (25lbs) 1 Wilson BLX Surge (24lbs), I let you pick one. (All those low end Apacs/Fleet rackets now with low tension string or without string sit inside the store room eat dust.)

So you think how many % of chances you will come? 30% 50%? 80%? 99%?

Thanks for your hospitality & drinks. The team is strong, I have no space to counter. Tired frm long drive & delicious foods prior to game.

Omage007 is not your average joe. difficult to find weakpoint as I have too many weakpoints to cover, ending give up la, sweated profusely.
MBI is a big hall, Lighting okay, court okay, shuttle flight okay. Issue is they close hall in time (before 10:20pm), no ding dong play ping pong. Gotta fully utilize 7:30-10pm, else you be locked in for the rest of the night.

LYN Friendly Match with this team is highly eye opener

You are welcome, you mix double and partner with stranger, sure the game won't be too easy for you.

My weakpoints? a lot, response and foot step a bit slowpoke, smash no power, backhand not strong, cannot jump high, and the list go on. . . . . .

Most of the Ipoh badminton courts is like this loh, close sharp at 10:00 or 10:30pm.

My MBI friday game 10 session maybe 2 or 3 session will got 1 or 2 ladies come join the game, if u want some mix double game maybe can try my Thursday GMB session, got 2 to 3 regular ladies player.

If you want a racquet:
1. How often do you play, how serious are you?
- Once a week, not dead serious but also not too casual

2. What style of player are you? (Aggressive smasher, net player ...)
-All rounder; playing doubles with pretty much equal mix of playing front/back/sides/offensive/defensive

3. Do you care much about durability or is it all about performance?
- A balance of both

4. Whats the most you are willing to spend?
- RM180-200

Extra info if it helps:

5. Currently using Apacs Nano 777 Speed which is rated 4U-G2, medium balance and medium flex

I understand that the grip size for Apacs is the opposite to Yonex, so my G2 would be a Yonex G4 .

I dont have much comments on my current racket (maybe not skilled enough to critique), only maybe the grip I'm using is too thick, making it feel sort of grip-heavy.

6. http://www.sunriseclick.com/http://www.sunriseclick.com/ suggested to me the Yonex Arcsber 7 based on my playing preferences but out of budget.

7. If its blue it will be a bonus biggrin.gif

8. String tension around 23-24lbs

if you cant really know what type of game you play etc: attacking, control, defensive, its kinda hard to recommend you a suitable racket.

Also, most of the pro's and sifu's here are into high end rackets. So for budget racket kinda hard to recommend i think.

Best advice is always go try your friends racket. Go pinjam and swing swing or play a few games with it is the best choice. Then you know which type of racket you love playing with.

Once your games improve eventually you will feel which racket type suits you. So.... go play more with different type of rackets. Happy smashing... icon_rolleyes.gif

yup. Like newbie said. I will always love my F9. All those smashes, its addictive to me. But been keeping it in bag for awhile. It was a present from my gf and already got 2 paint chips. Afraid that I might broke the birthday present from her, so keep in bag only for now.

Been using Arc 11 more and starting to like it as well. Just hoping that it will just be a little tad heavier on the head. Just a little bit more is enough. Current feel like macam not beefy enough.

it is. All rounded players are like Yoo Yeong Seong and ZhangNan.
Usually all rounder player will choose even balance rackets. You also using even balance racket for now.

So you should try swing a few more rackets from your friends so you will know exactly what you want.

do you like your racket setup now ?
want it to be overall lighter or heavier ?
head lighter or heavier ?
Grip smaller or bigger ?

After all these question clear, thn can start go shop ask for racket recommendations according to the specs you like.

Arc7 is an awesome racket. Had 1 before. But clash of titans broke it into pieces. Sigh.

if you are really into even balance can find this following series :
Yonex = Arcsaber
Victor = BraveSword, JetSpeed
Li Ning = I dunno. sorry.. sweat.gif

I feel quite okay with my current setup but anyway I should polish my skills before going deeper into choosing a racket.

Side question, buying from those stores in-house with a badminton hall or from those shopping mall outlets is also okay right? Just a matter of what rackets they have...

cheaper.
that is most important. to me. laugh.gif

btw..strung vs unstrung..for me, dont think it will diff much. just add on another 10g+- (string + grip).
so just leave on the plastic grip cover, should do.

and frame weight... +- 3-5g.
buy from right seller, we can request which weight we one. if got stock la.

That's true. You can't really test it without string. For me, I'm also not able to test without a shuttle. Swinging alone isn't sufficient.

well, overall its not worth to go for me. semi-open air, court got sand which can skid easily, and pricing is just the same as anywhere.
*poor maintained/condition court.

*
Went to Supercourts to get a replacement pair yesterday. I asked the shop guy about my premature sole wear and he said many customers are also having the same problem.

According to him its due to our footwork style (he didn't say it was wrong or bad, just different) which puts more stress on the inner edge causing it to wear off faster.

He suggested that I get a shoe with a tougher material made for the edges which would withstand the punishment. Attached Asics Gel Rocket 6 which I bought with the inner edge made of a different type of material, which he says is more suited for my type of footwork.

Now when I recall, my Apacs Air Repulsion 360 from secondary school had a similar design, and that one lasted me for many years.

anyone knows where to find ori cheap racquet shops in PJ/KL?

I'm looking for Voltric Z-Force or Z-Force II. Kinda new to racquet selection so need to personally visit and test.

Wondering if this thread is original? The Z-Force II selling @ RM145, but other invidual sellers selling at RM350~500

if its too good to be true means most probably fake.
ZF/ZF2 2nd hand is still selling at price around RM300 above for now.

You can try KD sports house in Kota Damansara to check out rackets. Or you can just drop by anyshop and have a look at the rackets you wanna touch touch hares hares. Thn can find for online seller which usually is abit cheaper.

don't say like that

yonex mid range is still better quality than apacs/fleet
it offers the kind of solidness that can't be found in apacs/fleet

Good racket ? How you define good ? To me it may suit me, to you may not ? Please tell us your style of playing... single or double game ? You like Head Heavy or Balance or Head Light ? RM 300 is good range dy. You may want to drop by to Bandar Utama as there is Aeon Yonex Fair. Go and swing a few, see which one you like. Event end on 31 Aug 2015.

ppl always just drop by and ask what is the best racket for RMxxx-xxx price range.

Next time we should just tell the ZF2LD. settle. let them go die with the head heaviness of the racket.

Hi guys,

Currently using Yonex 8000 Ltd and feel a bit light. Looking for a heavier racket any suggestion? Prefer Yonex but other brand may also be considered.

The car will represent your status, if you are driving a 3 Series, you complain the petrol expensive, I want to slap your face lor. If you driving a Viva, you said toll expensive, that is okay.

You don't own a car, but are you driving a family's car ?

The car will represent your status, if you are driving a 3 Series, you complain the petrol shuttle expensive, I want to slap your face lor. If you driving a Viva, you said toll expensive, that is okay.

You don't own a car, but are you driving a family's car ?

some tourney let CL win some let LD win, lose at semi so both collect pointz until become seeded no.1 and no.2 for big tournament and wont meet each other until finalz clean sweep gold and silver.

If lcw win either CL or LD he has to face either LD or CL again in finals. by then he out of gas y0.

pr0 tactics li yongb0.

bro can consider Li-ning if your budget is 200 and below.

the best is go to shop and test it out as different player has different playing style, need to find a racket to suit your playing style.

Kindly PM me if you are around PJ area, have a new shop that my friend just opened so maybe can help you with it smile.gif

i've been advised that li-ning is similar to having a samsung, heavily advertised hence the quality of the product is lesser than other brands as most of the sales will go back to advertising instead on the value of the product.

yonex is another brand to avoid apparently if my budget is on the low end side.

sweat.gif i guess that's the perception of people when they place heavy advertising eh?

For me all brands has their good models and not so good models. at the end is their personal experience with the product. smile.gif

Another brand you can consider is apacs! good ol malaysian brand smile.gif

Definitely, they would probably have a few which maybe out of my budget. Apacs definitely one of the brands I'm considering.. Will decide soon

How low is low? I'm using Yonex Z-Force bought around ~Rm350. I guess that's mid-high? I was told I'm "not suitable" for it in that my hits are not strong enough for it but I feel its the opposite as the head heavy frame compensates for my supposedly "lack of strength".

How low is low? I'm using Yonex Z-Force bought around ~Rm350. I guess that's mid-high? I was told I'm "not suitable" for it in that my hits are not strong enough for it but I feel its the opposite as the head heavy frame compensates for my supposedly "lack of strength".
*
Yonex Z Force is high end already, your level of high end is how ? Are you based on the price itself ? As Yonex no longer sponsor Malaysian Team, the price for a high end racket drop dy. When it first launch, it was RM 799.90 retail price.

Now Yonex high-end are cheap compare to li-ning and Victor. Just the limited edition one a bit high. but at least 600 can get a new high-end model. others good high-end model also can easy get around 400.

Old Model Z-Slash now only 199... Why not... Old but nice...

Hi guys, need a little advice here. My little sister just signed up for badminton classes. She's 8yo. Can you guys advice me which racket or what specs I should look for? Besides lightweight, what else should I look for? Not looking to spend more than RM100.

The last time I went shopping for a badminton racket back in 2009/10, the budget brands that were around RM100 were Apacs, ProTech, ProAce and Fleet but now I see too many brands in the sub RM100.

Thanks

Thanks for the quick response. I saw it earlier on Lazada. It's 85gram. I was looking at 80gram, as light as possible. And the price is RM129 on Lazada. A bit over budget. But if this is a top 3 choice then I wouldn't mind spending a bit over my budget.

Lightness won't matter as she'll be holding higher up the grip
So become light
But make sure it's tough enough to handle

The dropping
The throwing
The flying all over the place

if you're saying around that range that would be the price already.

and you're right, sometimes cheaper tube does not reflect to cheapest cost because they spoil too easily!

AS30 and Li Ning A+300 is kind good also. currently malaysia purple league using it.

Can drop by ss2 to buy if you're interested smile.gif
