i have tested a few C2D seems to me that my e6600 a lot hotter than others
Upon checking found out that my IHS is a bit concave
maybe is time to do some lapping to get better temp
warranty void no problem coz c2d not much value in 2nd hand market now
too many thread selling brand new only rm700 to rm900 only

wat do u guys think ! drool.gif

here is link lapping done by XS members : http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=121077

If you feel its really concave then its worth a shot, I know I would. However, do ensure that is the main cause of your heat problems, ie. is your HSF hot to touch? How hot is your cpu at load?

if the proc is concave, the hsf wont be as hot as it should be. reason? the contact between hsf and ihs is poor. the only way to know is using coretemp or intel's TAT. there's no other software that can read core temp as accurate as those software..
using thermal probe also wont solve the mystery since the position of the thermal sensor does effect the result..

Would love to see your results lapping it rlhc. Mine's apparently convex instead concave (lucky me) but would be considering doing that too. By the way, if you know where to get sand paper of 400, 800 and 1200 grit, do let us know

I suggest you lap yours if your IHS is concave and you're getting excessive temps. I did and my load temps dropped 5-10C (depending on what clock speed) at the same voltage. Using the stock Intel cooler.

almostthere, you can get the sandpaper from any hardware shop.

indeed! If ur h/w shop doesn't have higher grit then go to another one lor. i used 800, 1200, 1500 and 2000. Didn't get a mirror finish though. Took too long. Will post pics later. You should start with 400 as it'll be much easier.

Nope, i am not gonna do that, i love my Pentium D 930 liao... wub.gif

Even if i've wanted to do lapping on my processor's IHS, i'd think about doing it hundreds of times before i do it... laugh.gif

***Paiseh, up until today, no one answer my question about pulling out the LGA775 processor IHS... sweat.gif

Anyone know how? icon_question.gif

I've been wondering, if i take out the IHS, then put a thermal paste on the core of my processor, then smack em with my XP120 without putting the IHS back on top of the core, would it make a lot of difference than using together with the IHS? shocking.gif

I LOLed

Btw, after you removed the IHS, mean no protection to the bare core.
Installing heatsink directly will just break the bare core. Assuming you are installing those clip mounted heatsink.

You will need to add some protection and ensure that the pressure of the heatsink is just right for the bare core.

Water block will be easier a bit and less dangerous though.

Ya. U got a valid point there...I am sure HSF like XP-120 which use retention clip will had high change to break the core. I notice too much pressure applied on the IHS when installing it.. sweat.gif sweat.gif

Do anyone know, does Pentium D 930 also uses the same IHS that is used on C2D processors?

IINM, C2D processors uses Copper IHS that is covered in nickel plating...
Does Pentium D 930 also uses the same recipe? blink.gif

I have just lapped my e6600 ES.
And what a great suprise, decrease 5 degrees compared before lapping. wub.gif

I noticed that my ES is not flat at all before lapping, that's why i choose to lap it.

The result?

Do anyone know, does Pentium D 930 also uses the same IHS that is used on C2D processors?

IINM, C2D processors uses Copper IHS that is covered in nickel plating...
Does Pentium D 930 also uses the same recipe? blink.gif

AFAIK, even P4 uses copper IHS
no doubt Pentium D will be copper too.
Surprisingly, what you asked what you said could be found by google.

Anyway, nice work on lapping the E6600.

Nahh, u won't be able to check the processor batch unless u take a picture of it before u lap it. laugh.gif

How to know it's flat or not?
See how the thermal paste spread lah, put a bit of paste that is on the size of a rice, then fit a HSF on top of the processor, then see how the paste spread out.

That's one of the way to identify either the IHS is flat or not. thumbup.gif

Thanks sis.
Got very large differences between before lap and after lap.
A 5 degrees decrease is a very large drop. wub.gif

Dont forget that sHawTY is using an E6600 ES. So there is no more warranty for it.

Bear in mind that lapping your processor will automatically void your warranty. hehe

Anyway, sHawTY your result is impressive.

why not for you to lap it ?

As long as you got some time to spend, go ahead
XP-90 comes with copper base and it is nickle plated.
