Because if we go by that line of logic, basically what you're saying is I got Salvation because of my effort in loving and abstaining from all wrong doing contradicts Ephesians 2:8-9:

Ephesians 2:8-9 (NIV) - …8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.

And If I can attain Salvation because of that, I don't need Christ to be my savior.

This goes against the core meaning of Grace and doctrine of our Faith which is heresy.
SO what is 1 Corinthians 13 and Galatians 5 all about then? Read it in context.

1 Corinthians 13 basically tells that of all the attributes, Faith Hope and Love the greatest is Love, that's all. Why? Because the very essence of Love is God himself. When we Love we exhibit Christ, meaning We testify the evidence of a Living God, Christ Jesus to people who don't know God/Yet to Know or Don't want to know, so that they cannot deny there is God. All of all the attributes, Love is the strongest to break all these barriers.
This is the context.

Galatians 5 The Book of Galatians basically explains that there is another Gospel that was trying to make inroad and pervert the Gospel that Paul Preaches. And this New gospel basically is the same problem what we face today as in the days of the apostle Paul; which is the Gospel of Mixture of Works and Grace. They are trying to introduce Law back into the gospel. (Galatians Chapter 1-4). Law basically typify the meaning of Man's Effort.
If you read Galatians 3:3, it defines perfectly what is the meaning of the works of the Law. Read the New Living Translation because it gives a very accurate interpretation of that meaning.

if you read carefully, Galatians 5 basically explains Those who Belongs to God and Those who don't. Ironically the very beginning of Verse 1 in Galatians 5 already say this in defense of what I preach:

1 It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.

Christ set us free from the Law. The Law (man's effort) is a yoke of slavery. Man's effort basically covers Man's performance, I can Love I can abstain from wrong actions. It's all about my performance. If we go back to the Law, whether complete or mixture of Law and Grace, Christ becomes of no value.

He then goes on to explain those who belong to God and those who don.t

Those who belongs to God is explained in verse 24:

Galatians 5:24 (NIV) -  Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

In comparison with those who are not Christians who are bound to the corruption of Flesh.

Galatians 5:19-21

9 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this* will not inherit the kingdom of God.

* Those who live like this means those who are not saved. They are helplessly subjected and controlled by the corruption of the flesh as above.

Those who are saved is define in verse 24 as above. And verse 1 of Galatians 5 stand in testimony of this. Because we now have Christ (Christians) in our lives, we are free from this corruption and it takes the renewing of our mind to agree and conform to God's Word for it to happen and it will be a journey, meaning it will take time. But mean while, in between the growing period, are we saved? The answer is yes.
