Beast Killer: Russia’s Kornet-EM Stands Up to M1 Abrams



The Kornet-EM is a multi-purpose long-range antitank guided missile system. It was unveiled at the Moscow Airshow (MAKS) in August 2011. The system was also demonstrated at the Russian Arms Expo in September 2013 and May 2015.
The missile system is designed to destroy advanced and modern tanks fitted with explosive reactive armor from 1,100mm to 1,300mm, light-armored vehicles and fortifications.

It can also engage surface-level marine and low-speed aerial targets at ranges between 150m and 10,000m and offers high immunity against jamming.

The twin Kornet-EM salvo firing unit mounted on the vehicle's platform carries an ammunition load of 16 pieces, including eight ready-to-fire missiles.

The Kornet-EM is available in two configurations, which include an automatic launcher for deployment on carriers and a transportable launcher for combat operations under different environmental conditions.

The automatic launcher is controlled by an automatic and laser beam riding guidance system. It is fitted with high resolution cameras and third generation thermal imaging sight. Each launcher module weighs 75.2kg.

The automatic launcher can lay missiles at an azimuth angle of ±180° and elevations between —5° and +45° for ranges between 200m and 15,000m.

It engages the targets automatically and can perform salvo firing at two targets simultaneously.

The portable-transportable launcher of the Kornet-EM can be installed on wheeled and tracked vehicles, most recently on the Tigr armored car.

The Kornet-EM has already won big kudos abroad. Algeria, for one, plans to buy several units.

Most ATGM range is limited by the length of their guidance wire, not the rocket engine. So wireless or laser-guided missiles can have longer range over wired ones.

HEAT doesn't rely on velocity for penetration. All the work is done by the shaped explosive warhead. In fact the slower the projectile the better it is for the Monroe effect to burn through the metal.

HEAT warhead need to have an optimum certain distance from the armor plate for the penetrating plasma jet stream to properly form from the explosion. Slow projectile means the plasma jet stream of the HEAT warhead have time to focus properly to burn through armor. If projectile is too fast the jet stream may not have time to focus properly or the projectile may slam into the armor before the the shaped charge warhead's detonation can trigger the plasma jet stream, causing no penetration in either case.

China developing military stealth helicopter - E & T Magazine



China is reportedly developing a new helicopter that will provide its military with stealth capabilities, a Chinese newspaper has reported.

The new aircraft, being developed by the country's leading aerospace manufacturer Aviation Industry Corp of China, should be ready for delivery to the People's Liberation Army around 2020.

Citing Lin Zuoming, the company chairman of Aviation Industry Corp of China, told China Daily on Friday that the stealth capabilities of the helicopter will ‘reshape the combat patterns’ of the country's 2.3 million-strong military forces.

"It is a trend that the ground force will become increasingly dependent on helicopters because they have better strike capability and mobility than armoured vehicles and transport supplies to frontier troops," Lin said.

Without providing any further details, Wu Ximing , the chief helicopter designer of Aviation Industry Corp of China, said the aircraft would have ‘supreme manoeuvrability in complicated environments, outstanding survivability and joint operation ability’.

The development is another step in the strategy of China’s President Xi Jinping to toughen and modernise the country's army as China pursues its interests in the South China and East China seas.

In the recent years, the country’s industry has been focusing on development of multiple high-tech weapons including stealth jets, aircraft carriers and emerging technology aimed at shooting down satellites.
