BASIC Cost of Living in Singapore (Monthly)
=====================
Monthly Rent - 450
Food - 500
Public Transport - 150

Roughly you need about S$ 1100 per month for basic necessities.

Others
====
Mobile Phone - 70
Cable - 60
*
That is actually quite an overestimation.

I am not sure about the rent.

For food, SGD$500 a month is about $15 a day, which is more than enough, since the usual hawker center food costs around $3-$4. Buying your own plain bread and put butter even cheaper. =P

If you are always required to travel, there is a "season pass" so you can travel on buses with no limit at all. (http://www.sbstransit.com.sg/SeasonPass/features.htm)

For mobile phone, a cheap plan with 100 minutes talktime, free incoming calls all day, 500 sms, only S$25.88 monthly. See starhub.com for details. Other mobile providers are M1 and Singtel.

$45 or less can get you internet, see this http://www.singnet.com.sg/plans_and_servic....asp?snbb=3Matl still got free Xbox =D

Yes internet u can get at cheap at S$30 i forgot which plan u can get FREE Wii ( Console ) and the cheapest M1 fees at S$21+
Cheapest is actually Singnet, which has a plan that gives 1Mbps unlimited usage and costs $15/month.

Also, places like mcdonalds have got free wifi. I think certain crowded places like bus interchange, shopping malls will also have wifi.

With regards to the Great Singapore Sale, most neighbourhood shops also sell stuff at low prices all year round, just have to keep a lookout for the good deals thumbup.gif

1Mbps will soon be dying out... in another few years time, SG will be wired for 1Gbps, GOv is paying for the infrasture...

neighbourhood shops very much depends... not necessary cheap.. much depends on which area you from. In my neighbour, there is one shop that generally selling sundry items cheaper than most, sometimes, even cheaper than MY after conversion.  But not all the time.  Again, if you are within a rich communoty, don't expect things to be cheaper...
*
The problem in Singapore as reported by the media is that there is not enough local content. Hence, having a 1Gbps connection is quite useless when the traffic goes overseas. =)

Yes, don't expect things to be cheaper in Singapore, except for some electronics. But occasionally there will be a good deal here and there.

If you don't mind, just go to a backpacker's hotel near your workplace / place of interview.

http://www.thebackpacker.net/travelhostels...apore/index.htm

There are many more than those listed there.

ohh ya guys...i would like to bring brand new Wii into s'pore is it alright?
will the custom stop me from bringing in?

plan to bring ndsl and Wii there help my frens to buy here
*
It should be alright, because I ever brought brand new macbook in, but i opened up the box and put the macbook seperately rclxms.gif

You can try checking out the Singapore Customs website at http://www.customs.gov.sg

Anyway, the infomation that I provided earlier about the backpackers hotels may not be up to date, but it gives you an overall glimpse so you know what to expect. Another good website that you can see is http://www.hostels.com/en/sn.html?

Remember that you can always walk away and check out another hotel if you find that the price is not right. This is to prevent those bad ones from overcharging you. (Some might claim that they only have availability for the more expensive rooms, etc)

Good luck to all going for job interviews, hope you get your dream job! rclxms.gif

ic2. its just that im trying to imagine the prospects of working in singapore, and then what the situation would be once i return to malaysia.
if i were to work in singapore, it would be a short term thing. 2 yrs max. anyways, still gathering info on whether its worth it to work in singapore..
*
Lower cost of living in Malaysia and higher pay in Singapore, so it will be good if you work in Singapore.

But, if you want to have kids, not good to study in Singapore because the government there subsidise for the locals, not foreigners. So you pay more for education.

A 2-year working stint in SG sounds good, can put on resume in future that you have experience working overseas, etc. =)

the other thing you should take note of is the SMS charges to Malaysia.. it's quite expensive !!! i spend SGD 35 alone on SMSes back to Msia sad.gif

Why not get broadband and just chat over the internet?

QUOTE(J(o)y @ Mar 18 2008, 07:38 PM)
Serious, Malaysian more hardworking than Singaporean?? I thot is the other way round. in fact, ithot is double double other way round.

Singaporean is known to be very competitive (kiasu).  The students there started young to have high stresses, while malaysian student still at lepak culture.
*
Singaporeans are becoming more "Knowledge Based", hence, they aren't exactly getting lazier, but they are choosing jobs which do not require them to do much "work".

And do anyone know any good Recruitment Agency in Spore that can help ??? Other than this michaelyong@ebetterhelp.com

Appreciate your response. Tq smile.gif

Go get a copy of The Straits Times in singapore, they have a section called "Recruit" which lists the available jobs. There are certains days that are more "hot" and will have more job advertisements, anyone can help to check which day it is?

Also, online would be http://www.jobsdb.com.sg/Singapore/

Yes, the SG government encourage citizens to take public transport. But the public buses are omg packed during peak hours. Trains are still acceptable, since the air-con is always working. =P

Mentioned this before, just that didn't, its the Saturday edition that the job section is as thick if not thicker than the main news paper.  There are also articles on all sorts of infromation, e.g. like interview, expectation, pay packages, resume, etc.... ever discussed.  The weekend edition usually carries many heavy weight positions including those from agencies too...
*
Yes yes, the back page sometimes has very useful infomation! Occasionally there is "bumper" isssue with articles from e.g. some of the big biomedical companies, etc.

QUOTE(PoisonIvy82 @ Mar 28 2008, 09:04 PM)
Is it? I thought 30 cents only wor...  unsure.gif

How about signing up a Singapore line for family back in Malaysia. Then bring your Malaysia line over to Singapore. Then send sms to them using your Singapore line, so each sms is only S$0.05, and they sms your Malaysian line. tongue.gif Just a suggestion, if you want to sms each other alot.

hi..everyone, im new here...i wonder about job opportunies in sg related to hotel or hospitality...?? how about job opportinies in sentosa island in 2010 followed by new casino, hotels n some entertainment during that period brows.gif

There is ALOT of students studying in Polytechnics now, in courses that are related to the Integrated Resorts. This has already pushed the Cut-Off-Point (calculated from the O levels) down to near single-digit, becoming more popular than the usual Bio-Chemical courses.

Hence, most of the good job positions should be eaten up by all of them.
