I had one m17x-R4 with GTX 770M. i am looking another aw. maybe looking same model m17x-r4 also. i like this machine because it have HDMI-IN.

Previous generation chassis is made from Aluminum Magnesium alloy and coated with rubber.
Indeed indestructible, my old 14xR2 is still in service.

Early Alienware's are actually Clevo/Compal notebooks with automotive paint.
Those were the days Alienware chassis is made with cheap plastics and painted with glossy automotive paint.

I also thinking is connection problem, I just did a simple troubleshooting follow the instruction from service manual. According service manual, there are just 2 cables connect to display screen, 1 was connect with HDMI port, another 1 was connect to motherboard call "logo-board cable", I just disconnect & connect back "logo-board cable" nicely and try again. First few days looks good, but after that, problem appear again   

Try to communicate with Dell customer support, they just asking me to upgrade driver    and they said that may be application or game setting problem    . This problem just appear randomly, I don't know how to show them       
Yeah, good product design but bad QC. Must extend warranty if buying Dell, since it may have many problem. Not only Alienware, my friend's budget Dell Inpirion laptop also got motherboard problem within 2 years. 

looking your post makes me wondering the build quality Alienware nowadays. I guess rumors about worst QC for Dell is quite true.

    Dell support ask me to update bios when first time I complaint thermal problem      ... from your experience, looks like may be is motherboard problem        will complaint to them again. Thanks

Run epsa test many time except 4hour+ memory test. But no problem found during epsa test    .  I think this case quite hard to troubleshoot, because it appear randomly, maybe 1 time per day or maybe 1 time in few day.   

or should I continue use this laptop until this problem appear frequently then only complaint to Dell again.

Very happy with my AW13R3. After repaste and do some tweaking and modification the temperature as below;
(stress test about 1 hour)

before,
CPU
idling: 60C to 70C (some core different almost 10C)
max: 92C to 97C (damn hot)

GPU
idling: 65C to 70C
max: shoot until 99C lol

after
CPU
idling: 49C to 52C
max: Not more than 82C~85C (with turbo boost)

GPU
idling: 54C~57C
max: 73C~77C

With undervolt -150mv via XTU even reduced 1C to 2C further. and almost fan spinning not even heard. with TurboBoost enabled bossted to 3.8GHz and with daily task (word, surfing, checking email) the temperature registered not more than 60C. Nice.

Oh yes before I forgot, the last image shows got 1 thermal tape (near RAM slot). That is to reduce temperature for PCH. After some stressing it wont raise more than 65C. (Previously shoot up at 78C.

Well, at least i aint the only one with hot temps.

Dell "engineer" already replaced my heatsink and fan and used a better thermal paste and this laptop is still overheating.

I already asked for a replacement which can take up to 20+ days which i will wait and see.

Worst come to worst, complain to tribunal and get my refund.

All drivers are up to date.. still overheating.

Dell arrange an experience engineer for me. He was 6 years with Dell. He clean up original thermal paste with proper tools & cleaner before repaste thermal grizzly. He told me that motherboard was cause AW15r4 overheat issue, repaste thermal paste & change heat sink won't solve this problem. He also told me that don't upgrade BIOS in any case. This will cause motherboard problem. Another thing I noticed that my default motherboard was production in 02/2018 and the replacement motherboard was production in 04/2018. I think that was difference batch of motherboard and 02/2018 version may have overheat issue. So far my AW overheat issue had been solve, idle 45-50c and 80c while gaming.

We also had short discussion about Dell G7. He told me that Dell G7 don't have overheat issue, the common issue for G7 is keyboard problem. So if somebody looking for Gen 8th i7 + GTX1060, G7 should be good choice.   

Ops, looks like I should remove it to prevent people buy another headache "toaster machine" ... 

Right, the G7 with 1060 is truly overpriced.
I noticed now the G5 also comes with 1060, but also at a very high price.

I think sometimes the heat from vent might soften the plastic, combined with some rough force bend and patah.

They changed the vent 2 kali dah. So really need to be very careful unlike my last few alienware no need to be so careful one.
