Guys,

I'm trying to move my records from v1.6 to v1.7.

While trying to copy a set of new fund to the placeholder line in v1.7 xls file (copy A17:P22 and insert copied cells to line 195), I get the error "The operation is not allowed. The operation is attempting to shift cells in a table in your worksheet".

Any idea why? I tried the same copy and insert in v1.6 and have no such issues...

yklooi, yes, i'm copying the cells from A17 to P22 and then insert copied cell on line 195, and i got the error.

i tried the same copying of cells from A17 to P22 in v1.6xls and insert copied cell on line 195 and it works.

When you copy from v1.6 file to v1.7; don't select A:P (example A17 to P22); but instead, only select A:I (example: A17 to I22)! As the rest of the columns are either contains formula; or are not available in v1.6 (example the GST column).

Also, never ever replace formula's in different spreadsheet as the formula's might have been updated, and overriding them will cause the spreadsheet to be using wrong / old formula. Always stick with the white columns (data entry columns) only.

polarbearz, I've just tried to copy the cells from A3 to I11 from the v1.7 xls file and then insert copied cells on line 195. i was prompted to whether Shift cells right or Shift cells down. I chose the Shift cells down option and yet i still get the same error.
*
When you copy those cells, do you already have enough 'rows' (placeholders) equivalent to number of rows / data you are copying?

If yes, it shouldn't even pop up to shift cells because you are merely replacing the dummy data in new file, with figures in the old sheet.

polarbearz, i tried to copy from A3 to I11 and insert copied cells into line 23 (which should have more lines than the lines I'm copying from) and yet still get the error.

can you try it on your template file and see whether you got the error?
*
Nope, there are no errors.

Basically when you paste it, just make sure you are pasting it as values onto EXISTING cells, not trying to paste and let excel "Create" these new cells for you.

Below is an illustration on how to copy-and-paste.

polarbeaz, thanks for the screen shot which is showing how to add more lines into a fund. what i'm trying to do and having error is how to add a new set of fund into Investment Details worksheet.

i tried the steps you listed in the Instructions worksheet and i got the error that I've mentioned earlier. would it be possible to create the screen shot as per what you did in the previous post?

sorry to bother u....

PS: this is what i did and get the errors:

1. select cell A3 to I11 (shown in Step 1.jpg)
2. right click on Line 23 and select insert copied cells and get prompted for Shift cells down (shown in Step 2.jpg)
3. Select Shift cells down and get the error shown in Step 3.jpg)
*
Basically, using your example (I assume step 1 is old file with manual added gst column)

1) select cell A3 to I10 (not 11!!) and copy these cellw
2) do not right click on line 23. If you have enough empty lines already, just select cell A23 and paste as values (refer previous screenshot)

Basically doing the above, it should not pop the shift cell as long as you have enough rows. The reason you should exclude line 11 because it's a formula row, so do not ever copy it directly.

Let me know if it works.

polarbearz, are the steps you mentioned below only to add more rows into an existing set of fund? the screen shots that you see is from v1.7 xls. i have no problem adding more rows into existing set of fund (according to your screen shots previously).

What i want to do is to add new funds into v1.7 xls file. in v1.7 xls file, you only have 5 sets of funds and a placeholder section.

if i have 10 funds, how do i add another 5 set of funds?
*
1) The steps I mentioned is to copy the fund details from old spreadsheet to new spreadsheet

2) As you said, the default excel comes with only 5 SET of FUNDS. To add more funds, refer to the guide in the excel file on "How to add new SET of FUNDS".

Basically in a nutshell, what you need to do is:-

1) Go to new excel file, create 5 SET of funds.
2) After you created 5 SET of funds, ensure these total "10 SET of funds" have enough number of "Rows" to accommodate the funds currently in the old spreadsheet.
3) Once you have enough rows (example: Fund 1 = 10 data rows, Fund 2 = 3 data rows, fund 4 = 15 data rows, etc...), copy the fund DATA (exclude subtotal row please), a fund at a time. (example: copy cell A3 to I10 for Fund A, paste in new spreadsheet; then repeat same steps for the rest of the funds).

Technically if you are excel-savvy, you can manually add a column in v1.6 and modify the formulas, but only if you are familiar enough with the file. I'd advise against that and rather copy the funds data 10 times (one set at a time) to avoid errors.

jutamind I think I know why you kept getting the "Attempt to shift table cell" error already, even after following the instructions.

This is because the Excel version of yours is 2010, I remember woonsc encountered the same error but managed to resolve it,

woon, do you mind sharing how you add new set of funds into the template? Since the method I shared only works for Excel 2013++.
