FSM Idea Of The Week: Unit Split and High Fund Price Misconceptions [24 October 2014]
QUOTE
Investors should not judge if a unit trust is cheap or expensive based on its unit trust price or NAV. Instead, they should focus on the valuations (PE ratios) of the underlying equity markets that the unit trust invests in.

3. Common misconceptions about unit trust dividends/distributions:

(i) After dividend distribution, NAV price will go down, the fund will become cheaper.
(ii) A fund that declares dividends is better than a fund that does not, dividends are my profit, they make me richer.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

(iii) Topping up my holdings after dividend distribution pulls down my cost per unit, lower cost = higher profit.

(iv) Distribution = Income
QUOTE(jerrymax @ Mar 25 2013, 10:51 PM)
Ok so after dividend distribution, you get some additional units and NAV drops. Then after few weeks if fund perform well then NAV increases to the point where it is back to the NAV before distribution. Doesnt it mean you gain some income from distribution?

Then what's the point of dividend distribution since units and NAV price has negative correlation?

How do I know which Unit Trust to buy?
Before you jump in, there are several things which you need to find out about yourself. Your risk tolerance, investment goals, time horizon and so on. Go to FSM Getting Started section to find out more. After doing that, you should find the fund whose investment objectives match your own. Make use of FSM Fund Selector and read our fact sheets to compare and contrast the unit trusts available. You may also read FSM Funds' recommendations. Soon you will find one which you are comfortable with. Start with that first. As you gain more confidence and understanding of unit trusts, you may then invests more.

What is risk in investing?
The bottom line is that risk can mean different things – volatility, the risk of capital loss, the risk of not having enough income from your investment and the risk of not having enough in retirement. Each of these risks can be of greater or lesser importance depending on your stage in life, how much capital you have and your tolerance for risk. What’s more risk is perverse. The risk of capital loss is often highest when you think it is low (ie after good times) and lowest when you think it is high (ie after a bad patch).

•29 Apr 2015 at 20:29

NEW DELHI — The Indian government on Wednesday approved plans to build 100 smart cities and upgrade 500 towns and cities in a major initiative to improve urban infrastructure and boost economic growth.

Chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the cabinet cleared the projects that will attract minimum investments of 2 trillion rupees (1,037 trillion baht) over the next five years, a government statement said.

REGROUP. REGROUP. I have intra switched the profits or switched out completely from a few equity funds into bond funds these few days.

No point pounding my head against a brick wall. We need to be fluid like water sometimes.
