as for quality concern mkv format should be better than rmvb.... the file size of mkv is almost same as xvid (avi) file compression.... correct me if i'm wrong! |

Ya, I had this various converter. I dl the file is in avi. But I want to keep as collection. Avi file is rather too big. So I hope to keep in smaller size. But dunno which 1 to convert to...

H.264 la.
Anyway, mkv is not the same as rmvb. mkv is a GOOD CONTAINER format. more like AVI. in one MKV/AVI, you can store divx movies (not really sure about avi storing more than 1 movie), or mpeg movies, or mp2 m2v whatever format. as well as audio file(s), as well as subtitle file(s), as well as lots of other files in one container file. if you have a good video player (try zoomplayer), you should know that some avis got mpeg codec, some using divx, xvid, etc. Encik Matroska created mkv container format because he tak suka the limitations of AVI. RMVB is also a container, but has big limitations compared to MKV. normally people use rmvb to store MPEG-quality videos as it can achieve smaller size but minimal loss from MPEG. files that use rmvb normally are from China or HK. RMVB is very famous for chinese dramas. me personally HATE real. their players and codec are s****!! although the new ones are quite good, but why bother when there are so many good codecs around nowadays? best quality n filesize would still be xvid. H.264 is good also. but if your movies has got seperate files for subtitles or you wanna include other things (like 2nd audio for commentary, ), if the movie uses weird codec for audio, like m2v or aac or whatever, then MKV is the way to go. if the videos that you have are similar to chinese dramas, then i suppose u should go with rmvb if you like to follow the pack, so to speak if you want smaller filesize, then reencode the video to h.264 la. that's the codec of the future that a lot of people will use. then go with rmvb lo as your 2nd option. but really, why bother to reencode when you can spend a few ringgit and get a dvd burner? or go buy harddisk to store the movies. if softsubs, et al are not important, try to reencode to xvid. Then you can play the movie on standalone players that support mp4.
I like xvid because I don't have to fiddle with all sorts of settings and can still get a good quality movie file. to make the file smaller, use mp3 as your audio, otherwise, ac3 is not bad. |

But if using xvid then the file size a bit big even I use mp3. For an episode of bleach ad took me about 140MB for avi but rmvb and mkv only about 40MB.
Note that bleach and naruto not only 70 episode but it goes hundred over. I still had other anime to collect too. Bcoz my frens usually borrow anime from me. I can burn about 20 episode for avi in 1 DVD but if use rmvb then can store about 70 episode. But I keep heard mkv is better than rmvb. Is it true?? H.264 I 1st time heard so I still searching for that info, codec and converter. This post has been edited by johann: Oct 20 2006, 02:29 PM |

AVI gives the best compression/quality ratio ever, and not to mention there are more DVD player that support Xvid and DivX compression. thus making this the most popular compression method, leaving RMVB in memories of Pentium III users

MKV is a matroska container. IIRC it should be the best container currently for video files. You can store your softsubs in it and encode using codecs like xvid or h264 or divx.
RMVB is real player format. I personally don't favor this format though. If there is a video file which is encoded in avi or rmvb. I'll later the former over the latter. |
