I had the chance to dropby machines to have a look at the new macbook. Damn the gold is sexy. Looks really small and compact. Love the feel of it. Screen is great and sharp.

But the price kinda high. Might need to wait this out...

Torn between grey and gold

And whether to switch over from my 2012 macbook air base 11" model

I find my MBA laggy these days so worried the macbook retina will be the same (but cost almost double!)

I was using 2012 rMBP 15" (1st Model) before i changed to MB 1.2/512GB last month.

There are certainly some sacrifices necessary
1. No chance for gaming. My minimum requirement of Football Manager lags when i play it but not unplayable. I can forget about heavier intensity games.
2. I have hundreds of small pdfs in hundreds of folders. There are a second or two lag now when i those open folders*
3. FHD Videos take longer to load*
4. Adobe Programs will lag a lot more*

*Actually they are not that bad but it is like using a iPhone 6 for calls and smses only but when revert back to iPhone 4, there is actually a noticeable lag although not important.

There are some benefits to my everyday life.
1. I now carry my macbook around instead of my iPad air. It is more productive that way.
2. I bought the 512GB so i don't need thumb drives / externals. While people are outrage by the one port, in truth, we should strive to minimise usb ports to be truly portable anyway..
3. I type faster now but sometimes i have problem adapting back to the original keyboard (more mistakes)
4. I can type of my lap while sitting down (Previous rMBP is just too hot) and i can type on a airplane tray.
5. Retina screen matters to me so this alone trumps macbook air. It always feel good to work/type at a brighter and clearer screen despite many saying it does not matter.

There are some unnoticeable difference to my everyday life
1. Primary emails (even with >200k emails and 180GB worth, it does not lag when i open Apple Mail or search)
2. Safari
3. Itunes
4. All of above + Words/Excel at the background, it will not lag.
5. Spotlight (I use this heavily and it doesn't lag)

As i mentioned before this, this MB is meant for a very specific group of people. Especially frequent travellers and people on the go (Professionals like Sales/Project Manager) or even people who uses iPad + keyboard. I certainly became more efficient after switching (Largely because i can no longer game. laugh.gif)

I wouldn't...

Just molested the rMB 2 days ago, I hate the keyboard... Doesn't feel like a real keyboard, neither does an on-screen key either... shakehead.gif

I originally felt the same, nearly wanting to sell once i receive it. Now i got used to it, it is way faster than i used to type. Great stuff. Don't give up on it yet!

Actually the price gap is not much different.

11" MBA with 512GB SSD / 8GB Ram = RM5,467
13" MBA with 512GB SSD / 8GB Ram = RM5,891
12" MB with 512GB SSD / 8GB Ram = RM5,829

Don't be misled by MBA's pricing because of the default design of 4GB Ram

I'd just like to add that in addition to this the battery life on this is truly phenomenal. I bought a second charger at Machines at Gardens for RM179. Second USB C cable for RM109 so I don't have to bring the charger back from work. All in all, I'm happy with this.

People overlook the significance of the charger.

It is much lighter than the magsafe chargers and should be in consideration vs macbook air (when comparing weight/size)

so what's the verdict here - gold vs space gray?

Can't get stocks anywhere at all! Think I'll just order from the online store
