lol i think most are willing to spend if they want it badly. My earphones cost more than RM10k, would you spend that much on just an earphone when you can get a free one which comes with your phone? or for less than RM100 which performs the same function? If comparing specs has no meaning then Apple could easily sell a rMB with a 1st gen iPad hardware inside it to their isheeps lol. Comparing specs is what drives up the competition for a better product, i'd be afraid to think how technology would progress if people think specs have no meaning.
I love portability, but not at the expense of performance. I'm sure the rMB will perform daily tasks fine, e.g. surfing net, streaming videos, word/excel. But so does my iPad. I don't expect it to be as powerful as a rMBP, but i'd jump on the rMB if it's performance gets closer to the MBA.
If you have ever notice the evolution of iPad carefully, you will notice iPad has changed in terms of performance speed, thinness, weight, and battery life. These are important and significant changes that attract people to buy newer iPad. It is not fair to compare the current technology and the one 5 years ago.
Based on your thought, we should rather compare the current iPad with other brands of tablets. The latter is cheaper, 2-3GB ram, with usb support and logical drive support. But why do people still choose iPad? Do they buy iPad because of the branding and aesthetic? The answer is obviously no, if anyone had tried android or Windows tablets before.
Back to MacBook, 12 inch MacBook is 921g; 13 inch MBA is 1.35kg. The difference of 429g makes significant difference to a person who have to walk here and there everyday, especially towards evening. What iPad could not do compared to the new MacBook is accessing usb drives, e.g. thumb drives. If you have ever used an iPad to draft a letter or to prepare for slides for presentation, you will definitely know how limited you could do using iPad. iPad just can't really replace notebook completely.
Just like what my thought before, if you would to compare, compare it with the same/similar line of products. Don't compare apples with oranges. They aren't the same. I wouldn't compare iPhone to iPad.
I don't deny that MacBook still has rooms of improvement, but to me, the price of this MacBook is still decent.
