I own a soul red sedan Mazda 2 and I can honestly tell you the best value buy for this segment is actually the Honda City.

But in choosing City you let go the "Wow factor", leather interior, sporty engine and handling and gain resale value.

Just want to add something about the struggling hill climb. Apparently, the 5th-6th gear only will struggle during hill climb at 2krpm. Tried using manual mode downshift to gear 3 managed to climb with light paddling at 2krpm at about 40km/h. Upshift to 4 for more speed if the hill is not so steep.
