Hi All,

Recently, our company announced that they were going to outsource IT Department to other company.
Therefore, all of us have been retrenched. This made my job hunting activities started again.
I did apply quite number of jobs in Jobstreet. Had been for 1 interview so far and another one will be on next week.
Apart from that, I have also put some efforts by contacting job agencies, asking referral from friends etc

This morning, I contacted my friend and forwarded my resume to her. Unfortunately, I received a very bad feedback from her.
She said, most of the MNC in Penang ONLY hire Chinese for IT position.
Even though the HR personnel had recommended other races as candidate, the chance is ZERO!
Is this really happening in Penang? I was so frustrated after heard that from her. Why there is no equally treatment given for others?

On the other hand the MNC company I'm in in PJ is pushing for malay in engineering position.
The last 4 engineers hired are malay. When asked HR they say only malay applied. But the fact is others applied too.

Reason is I prefer a mix so that when comes festive season, some can work while some Balik kampung

I wonder why the MNCs are so unprofessional when they are hiring people for their organization.
Better they just eliminate the MNC status and let it be Chinaman company.

Friend of mine, Indian, in Penang, join MNC company with 2 year exp, 4 month after he join, another guy also with 1 year exp join the company, Chinese, salary RM700 more than him.
To make him feels better, I keep saying that during interview stage why he didn't nego the salary. He said he did but no luck. Have you guys experience same situation before?
I hope I will not get the same fate as him. So scare since I also working with the same environment like him.

Yes.it's racist,I agreed it,but there must be reason for being racist. In my experience,I worked in other MNC company before, worked together with Chinese & non-Chinese(Malay/India),One thing I found between my teammate.
Chinese, you asked to do one thing,he will do and suggest better improvement.
Non-Chinese,you asked to do one thing,he will do for it,once done he will not tell you done already, until you ask him.Bro,done already?Oh ya.already.sweating.
I have alot non-Chinese friends and colleague too, some of the really smart and hardworking. But,wondering why majority or High Percentage of Non-Chinese always giving disappointing feel, always have problem is laziness,MC always.really curious.this might be reason ,some employer stated the statement Chinese ONLY,although I am not agreed with it and it's racist.

There must be a reason to be racist? You want to sound right but you justifying racism?

I been working with an MNC, Chinese, GLC companies during my employment. From my observation, when you lump a specific race together, they tend to be comfortable and no longer progressive. A group of Malay in GLC are among the laziest people that I observed, a group of Chinese in manufacturing are among the rudest and resistant to change.

I also have a lot of Chinese friend and colleagues and since I'm working in a Chinese dominated company, I also encountered a lot of claim falsify, leave manipulation, backstabbing, politikking, bad-mouthing and etc. I solely blame the individual instead of blaming the entire race on this.

But why should generalize all NON-Chinese people are the same and never seen the potentials on the candidate itself?
Have you ever encountered Chinese with bad attitude as well?

At my previous company and in my, team there are two Chinese guys who always missing in action and coming late to work.
The monthly ticket done by them also very less if compared with others but no action is done due to the manager is Chinese also.

well, in my opinion, racism/favoritism exists all over the world. let's face it - we DO NOT live in a perfect world.

i guess you cannot judge based on a single reply from your friend or lack of feedback after a few job applications. i have friends in different ethnic groups working in different MNCs in Penang. also, there are jobless Chinese, Malay, Indian that are striving to land a new job in this time of challenging economic

as long as you have the knowledge/experience/qualifications, you should be confident enough to believe in yourselves & seek a position & salary that is on par with your expectations.

on a side note, i have a Chinese friend in Penang that is currently jobless (VSS from previous employer) and he has been sitting at home for the past 2 months. he shared with me that he applied so many jobs on JobStreet that once it hits certain amount of application, he will receive warning. by continue applying until another certain amount, he will be blocked to apply until next month when it refreshes the count. so there you go - continue to apply online, talk to head hunters, ask help from your friends.

so there you go. rather than bragging and feeling disappointed over a single reply from your friend that MNCs in Penang prefers Chinese, I suggest that you start clicking the "Apply" button wink.gif. best of luck in your job hunt!

It is hard to maintain a system when there is something abnormal in the components. Unfortunately, the abnormal part is your race. They are not racist, but being professional on ensuring the system operates at its maximum potential and business as usual. it's like your plain water, u have 1 drop of oil it will cause disharmony in the system. they dont hate you, they are just being objective.

Yeah... the world is cruel. racism/favoritism happens everywhere.. there is no such thing as fair/equal treatment in the world
I'm not only speaking from the single statement given from my friend but I had experienced before where the Chinese were gaining higher salary than other ethnics

I admit that my experience is a bit lacking especially handling with the servers and networking. I only have 2 years experience on that and my salary is quite high than others. I would say I'm overpaid by getting that amount of money. That is another reason why it's very hard to get job where my skills and experience are not parallel with my salary.

Anyway, I had applied lots of jobs on the Jobstreet and sending emails directly to the companies. Fortunately, I have one interview this week.

So do you think this is the time for the chinese to seek for revenge?
I also very frustrated with my own race especially for those who always take for granted.

so many other things to consider.. just because your friend gets a lower salary doesnt mean that company is racist. your friend maybe from small company join MNC sure lower salary compared to MNC jump to MNC.

Thoyol is right.

It depends on each individual character and their personality.

For e.g. I have a very rajin Chinese Colleague and a Super Duper Fake KPI chinese colleague.

I think you just answered your own question.

Try lower down your expected salary and position level. You might attract more potential employer or take this opportunity to go learn some skills...

Some company they preferred certain race, it is all depends on the hiring manager and their culture.

Notice why most purchaser is female and majority Chinese, even in GLC. Meanwhile in GLC, 99% are Malays; yeah except for that purchaser and some admin staff that makes the 1%. Weird? hmm.gif

Anyway, don't give up. The economy wasn't good, many VSS/retrenchment still looking for job.
