Yes, the new one has VR. There's only one VR version because the original 24-70mm f/2.8G like yours never had VR.
Actually very slight sharpness difference in the centre which the older model is better. But edge to edge performance the VR version is better. And even that it's at wide open. Smaller apertures and the difference is gone.

A lot of people update not because of the better optics but more for faster focusing and VR function.

The only cons for me is the VR is heavier, longer, 82mm filter and more importantly more expensive than the original 24-70mm f/2.8G.

I wish I would go for the Nikon 17-55mm. However, budget constraints and I need it quite urgently (travelling soon).

May I know 24-70mm f2.8 how much it will cost? (2nd hand or third party). I would really consider if its still under my "serious budget" wise. As I believe it has same quality image but wider zoom range. (even more versatile than the 17-55mm during travel).

Using D610 for almost 2 years. Feel a bit frustrated. Somehow i feel my previous D90 is better in term of photo quality (sharpness, noise, colour, etc).

Haihhh...im using 28-300mm lens now. Perhaps, change to tamron 24-70 can have significant different?

This d7200 is to replace my mirrorless that is in the drybox.  And, mostly for my wife lor. I will not consider d5500 due to lack of control dial. Sometime will use it for wildlife too.
