REVIEW RINGKAS MESINGAN M134D "MINIGUN" PUTD

(Rentaka)

UAE, Sikorsky Work to Weaponize Black Hawks
By Awad Mustafa 7:50 a.m. EDT March 9, 2015

user posted image

ABU DHABI — Sikorsky is close to beginning upgrades to the UAE's helicopters that would give them the "most advanced armed Black Hawks ever produced," a company vice president told Defense News.

Robert Kokorda, vice president of sales, said the UAE-funded development program of the kits to weaponize UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters is in its final development stages.

The certification of the UAE-mandated weapons kit will be completed in the near future, he added, once the test-firing program is finalized.

Kokorda was not able able to provide more details on the completion dates of the test-firing program.

The UAE is estimated to have almost 70 Black Hawks with Sikorsky investing in the Advanced Military Maintenence Repair and Overhaul Company (AMMROC) joint venture with Lockheed Martin and UAE state-owned Emirates Defence Industries Co. (EDIC).

In February 2011, the UAE announced a $270.5 million upgrade order from Sikorsky for 23 UH-60Ms with Battlehawk kits.

The UAE was the launch customer for the Battlehawk kits, which include guided weapons, optical and laser-guided anti-armor missiles, Hellfire and emerging laser-guided rockets.

Abu Dhabi has already upgraded some of its Black Hawks for the "close-air support role with gun turrets and missile mounts as well, said Douglas Barrie, senior fellow for military aerospace at the International Institute for Strategic Studies.

"Some of those, the [UH-60]M model were upgraded and modified for the close-air support role with gun turrets and missile mounts as well," Barrie said.

"This is somehow a continuation of the path the UAE was going down in this area of interest."

The requirements for the weapons systems kit over the years, however, has changed, Kokorda told Defense News.

"The changing requirements over the years and the evolving security needs has led us to adapt this project that we envisioned together years ago to meet all the current needs of the UAE," Kokorda said.

"We have been underway now for a couple of years and it's going along well where we are working to finalize the different configurations that the UAE want on the aircraft and are in the testing phase," Kokorda added..

The Battlehawk would provide the UAE forces with a combat support capability as well as a personnel lift capability, much like the Russian Mi-24 Hinds, Barrie said.

"[The kit] would make it a weaponized utility helicopter, which goes some of the way of being an attack helicopter, but not all the way," he said.

"The closest in original content to it would be the Mi-24 Hind helicopter because that was combat support helicopter and that could carry troops and pack a fair punch as well."

The development program has been completely funded by the UAE, but is being marketed to other customers.

"Right now [this product] is for them and until we have finished creating the product for them, we are actively marketing it, telling everybody that we are going to have this weapons kit available, but we are not necessarily developing other things beyond what the UAE is looking to put in," Kokorda said.

Sikorsky will also supply some to the development information to the UAE for its use, he added.

"We understand that before we embark on a project like that together, what the ITAR [International Traffic in Arms Regulations] framework allows us to do and so both sides have to agree that that's acceptable," he said. "We are now in a mode where we are developing products together and bringing that to the larger market."

He stated that the joint development of this program, which will bring the most advanced weaponized Black Hawk to the market, is an important aspect for Sikorsky.

"One way to make sure that both sides get something out of this within the framework of the ITAR is that there is investment coming from the UAE to the United States."

"So it's not just Sikorsky investing in AMMROC, this is the UAE investing in development in the United States and that weapons kit intact is fueling engineers in the United States to do work."

Drone war: ‘Burraq’ turned the tide in Tirah battle, say officials

user posted image
This television screen grab shows UCAV Burraq launching the laser-guided missile Burq.

PESHAWAR:
The strategic Tirah Valley has been the scene of fierce fighting between the Pakistani military and a potpourri of militants for nearly two weeks. The military claims to have achieved ‘significant successes’ in the battle for Tirah. And security officials say Pakistan’s indigenously-developed armed drone ‘Burraq’ has turned the tide against the militants in this offensive.

The remotely-piloted aircraft ‘Burraq’ and laser-guided missile ‘Burq’ were tested on March 14, taking Pakistan a step closer to acquiring the technology it has long demanded from the United States. However, senior security officials told Express News that much before ‘Burraq’ was publicly showcased it had been tested in live combat against militants in the Tirah Valley.

The officials would not say how many targets have been taken out with the help of Burraq, but they claimed that senior militant commanders, including those from Mangal Bagh’s Lashkar-e-Islam (LeI) and Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), were killed in Pakistani drone strikes.

According to dronewars.net, a website that provides information and comment on use of drones, 30 other countries have large military drones. Apart from its pure military usage, Burraq also has valuable reconnaissance importance and Tirah has been a testing ground for it.

“They have built bunkers in the mountains covered by a wall which initially made it difficult for us to target,” one security official said. “However, their movements were tracked and their hideouts destroyed with the help of laser-guided missiles,” he added.

On March 18, a gathering of militants was targeted in a border village in Tirah which led some private TV channels to report that TTP chief Mullah Fazlullah was also among those killed in the strike. Officially, Fazlullah’s death was not confirmed, while the TTP denied the media report as propaganda.

Giving details of the strike, another security official said several militants had gathered in the village close to the Nizyan district of eastern Afghan province of Nangarhar. “They were celebrating [something] and had brought along three cows to slaughter,” another security official told Express News.

After a fierce battle that lasted well over a week, almost 109 militants were killed. But the victory in sight has not come easy as the ridge connecting Pakistan and Afghanistan has been the scene of bloody fighting. Though the militants have been mostly dislodged from the ridge, the LeI and TTP are getting support from militant groups from other parts of the tribal belt as well as from Afghanistan.

The officials said the fleeing militants had strapped bombs to the abandoned bodies of their comrades and security personnel killed in the fighting. Since these were ‘pressure bombs’, a special team from the Corps of Engineers had to be called in to defuse them.

While the North Waziristan operation was thought to be the mother of all battles, the Tirah operation has turned out to be more difficult than the military had anticipated. Three militant factions – LeI, TTP and TTP Jamaatul Ahrar – have ganged up to put up a united front. On the first day of combat there were over 200 fighters, but their numbers have multiplied since then. Analysts say peace in the region now hinges on the outcome of the Tirah battle.

Russia's New Military Transport Plane Set to Make Its Maiden Flight in 2017

user posted image

The aircraft's mass production is expected to be launched in 2019.

New Russian Plane Will Be Able to Deploy Army Globally in 7 Hours by 2024

The twin-engine turboprop plane, developed by the Ilyushin Aviation Complex (JSC IL), will be manufactured by the Voronezh Aircraft Production Association at an aircraft plant in Voronezh, located some 400 kilometers (250 miles) south of Moscow. It will replace the Antonov An-26.

Russia's Ministry of Defense plans to purchase at least 35 Ilyushin Il-112 planes. Earlier, JSC IL said the company was ready to deliver more than 60 Il-112 aircraft to the military.

The transport plane is designed to carry out missions in any geographic or weather conditions. It has a payload of 6 tons and can travel a maximum distance of 5,000 kilometers (3100 miles).

The project, launched over a decade ago, was canceled in 2011, but the work on the Il-112 resumed in 2013.

China developing fighter with VTOL capability

user posted image
Concept art of the fighter by an internet user. (Internet photo)

China is developing a new fighter with vertical take-off and landing capability, according to the official website of the state run Aviation Industry Corporation of China on Mar. 20, reports the Sina Military Network based in Beijing.

Like the AV-8 Harrier designed for the US Marine Corps, China's new stealth fighter is developed to serve aboard the PLA Navy's future amphibious assault ships.

The mission of this new aircraft is likely to be to provide close air support to ground forces operating in the Asia-Pacific region. China began the program to develop a fighter with VTOL capability back in 1950s.

However, these earlier aircraft were unsuitable for service because they lacked a proper flight control system, engine and material at the time.

Boeing progresses Malaysian Hornet upgrade programme

Jon Grevatt, Bangkok - IHS Jane's Defence Industry
25 March 2015

Boeing is more than halfway through a programme to upgrade the mission systems on board the Royal Malaysian Air Force's (RMAF's) fleet of eight F/A-18 Hornet fighter aircraft as it seeks to increase its presence in the market.

A Boeing spokesperson confirmed to IHS Jane's on 26 March that system modifications on six of the eight RMAF Hornets have so far been completed. IHS Jane's understands that the upgrade brings the software capabilities of the RMAF aircraft to a comparable standard to that of the US Navy and Marine Corps.

The programme, which is progressing as a US Foreign Military Sale, also allows the RMAF Hornets to operate the advanced medium-range air-to-air missile (AMRAAM) and the joint direct attack munition (JDAM).

SENSITIVE MILITARY GEAR ENDED UP ON EBAY, CRAIGLIST

user posted image

QUOTE
The Pentagon lost track of sensitive equipment from a $750 million program to help U.S. soldiers spot roadside bombs — and some of it wound up for sale on eBay, Craigslist and other websites, according to a Navy intelligence document obtained by The Intercept.

The missing equipment includes thermal optic imaging and night vision devices that were supplied to U.S. forces to help locate improvised explosive devices, the leading killer of U.S. troops in Afghanistan, as well as related threats. “Since 2009, some of this advanced hardware has been reported as missing and is actively being sold or discussed on the global market on a variety of websites,” says an intelligence brief by the U.S. Naval Criminal Investigative Service and its Multiple Threat Alert Center.

MRCA: Updates, Sort Off

Marhalim Abas March 27, 2015 Airshow, Malaysia - RMAF

SHAH ALAM: YES its a week after LIMA, I am only starting to write about the MRCA programme . It is just to show there is not much really moving on the MRCA even at the country’s premier airshow. Three of the MRCA candidates were present at LIMA 2015 but only the Dassault Rafale took part in the flight displays. In the exhibition hall and corporate chalets, however, all was relatively quiet.

Well some may argue that the offer from Dassault, the same financial package to Malaysia like those for Egypt was the big news from Langkawi. And what about the offer from ATSC to upgrade the Fulcrums to the NM standard then?

And yes, the British Government offer to lease the Typhoons remained on the table. And they could also deliver the Typhoon (RAF Tranche 3 standard) within months of a contract being signed. All of this maybe news to some but to me “its Ground Hog Day” all over again.

Perhaps I am being snobbish about all of this but as the Defence Ministry and RMAF were pretty quiet about the project during the whole week was an indicator to me that it was better to wait for a sunny day.

I guess we have to wait until June to see whether or not we will be getting the MRCA. In the meantime, I am taking a break from chasing the MRCA story. If there is any significant updates, hopefully you will be the first ones to read it here.

Anyhow, I made a mistake in my preview when I posted that the both the Rafale and Super Hornet were expected to conduct flight displays at LIMA 2015. I was wrong. Only the Rafale performed at LIMA 2015, something which also surprised Dassault officials. The Typhoon was only represented by a full size replica and a booth dedicated to show the plane’s capabilities including a simulator.

And yes, the F16V is a suitor though not yet an official candidate for the MRCA.

USNS Trenton JHSV 5 completes US Navy acceptance trials

user posted image

The US Navy's new joint high-speed vessel 5 (JHSV 5), USNS Trenton, has successfully completed acceptance trials in the Gulf of Mexico, marking a major milestone prior to its delivery.

The trials were conducted by the US Navy and involved comprehensive testing of the Austal-built USNS Trenton's major systems and equipment.

Austal chief executive officer Andrew Bellamy said: "The JHSV programme is in a mature, efficient phase of construction and USNS Trenton is the latest example of Austal's ability to design and construct high-quality defence vessels for the US Navy."

Austal is building ten such vessels at its shipyard at Mobile, Alabama, under a $1.6bn contract from the US Navy.

"USNS Trenton is the latest example of Austal's ability to design and construct high-quality defence vessels."
USNS Brunswick (JHSV 6) is expected to be launched later this year, while USNS Carson City (JHSV 7) and USNS Yuma (JHSV 8) are at various stages of construction.

The 338ft-long USNS Trenton can accommodate 104 personnel and includes airline-style seating for 312 members. It will be operated by the navy's military sealift command with a core crew of 22 civilian mariners and military mission personnel boarding when required.

With 20,000ft² open-mission and flight decks, JHSVs can support day and night launch and recovery missions as well as fast, intra-theatre transportation of troops, military vehicles, supplies and equipment.

The vessels can be deployed for a range of operations, including overseas contingency missions, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, and support for special operations forces and emerging joint sea-basing concepts.

Thailand Eyes Submarine Fleet

By Aiswarya Lakshmi
Thursday, March 26, 2015, 3:04 AM

Royal Thai Navy (RTN)'s plan to buy submarines is on again with strong backing from Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwon who wants Thailand’s fleet to be on par with neighbouring countries.

Defence minister Prawit Wongsuwon was quoted as saying by Bangkok Post on Wednesday that the country needs to equip its navy, who wants Thailand’s fleet to be on par with neighboring countries.

The Minister thinks that Thailand must develop naval equipment, fleet and its neighboring countries in order to maintain the same level.

The budget allocation for the same could be around 36 billion baht ($1.1 billion), the report said.

Thailand’s plan to acquire submarines is neither new nor surprising. Lacking a submarine capability since 1951, the country has tried since the 1990s to ink submarine deals with several countries, including most recently Germany and South Korea.

Though they eventually did not materialize, many were expecting Thailand’s submarine quest to once again become a top priority once the ruling military junta seized power in a coup in May 2014.

The navy opened an ultra-modern, 540-million-baht submarine base and training centre in Chon Buri province in July last year, even though the country doesn't own a single sub.

The source said the Chinese-made Yuan class is favoured by the committee due to its specifications. The U-class from South Korea and Germany also pinged the sonar screen.
