Indonesia's MPR Contributes RM40,000 To Repair House Damaged In Aerobatic Crash

LANGKAWI, March 17 (Bernama) -- The People's Consultative Council or Majelis Permusyawaratan Rakyat (MPR) of Indonesia has handed over a contribution of SGD15,000 (about RM40,000) to the owner of a house which was damaged in an incident involving a Jupiter aerobatic aircraft belonging to the Indonesian Air Force last Sunday.

The money, in the form of a cheque was given by MPR head representative, Dr Oesman Sapta to former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad who represented the victim, Zulkeflee Abu Talib, 46.

Oesman said the money was assistance to the victim who lost his house in the incident.

"I have handed over the contribution in the name of MPR and hope it will lighten the burden of the victim in repairing the house," he told reporters after presenting the cheque.

Meanwhile, Dr Mahathir who received the contribution, was thankful to MPR.

"The contribution is adequate to rebuild the victim's house," he said.

Last Sunday, two Jupiter Aerobatic Team aircraft owned by the Indonesian Air Force were involved in a crash while carrying out an aerobatic exercise at the Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre (MIEC) at 2.04pm. In the incident, a house was damaged in Kampung Gelam nearby.

The accident took place when a group of six KT-1B aircraft was crossing the air space of MIEC before two of the aircraft collided in mid-air.

Jokowi meets TNI, police on possible budget increase

The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | National | Tue, March 17 2015, 4:25 PM .

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo held a meeting with the Indonesian Military (TNI) and the National Police on Tuesday with regard to the modernization of the two institutions, and the possibility of a defense-budget increase.

Those present during the meeting included Vice President Jusuf Kalla, Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna H Laoly, Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Tedjo Edhi Purdijatno, TNI chief Gen. Moeldoko, acting National Police chief Comr. Gen. Badrodin Haiti, Cabinet Secretary Andi Widjajanto and State Secretary Pratikno.

“[The President] will discuss the possibility of increasing defense spending from Rp 102 trillion [US$7.7 billion] to Rp 200 trillion by 2017, if the economy has grown by 7 percent [by then],” said Andi on Tuesday as quoted by Antara news agency.

After the meeting, Moeldoko said that the meeting was also held because the head of state wanted to get to know more about the military headquarters staff.

Before the beginning of his presidency, Jokowi said the Defense Ministry would be the largest recipient of state funds, as outlined in the 2015 draft state budget, with around Rp 95 trillion allocated. (dyl/nfo)(++++)

Move over, Humvee: IMI’s ‘CombatGuard’ 4×4 leaves its competitors in the dust

user posted image

Military vehicle aficionados, meet your next bedroom poster.

It’s called the CombatGuard, and it’s made by Israel Military Industries (IMI). First unveiled at the 2014 Eurosatory defense and security show in Paris, the armored 4×4 boasts the capabilities to make Humvees blush.

Let’s start with off-road aptitude. The CombatGuard wears massive 54-inch tires and has three feet of ground clearance, allowing it to navigate 70-degree slopes with little difficulty. It can hurdle vertical obstacles up to 2.6-feet high and can traverse through water 5-feet deep.

user posted image

On the road, the 17,637-pound vehicle can reach speeds up to 93 mph. In the dirt, it’s capable of an impressive 75 mph, which is faster than the iconic Humvee can go anywhere. This is in part due to the eight-seater’s stout engine, a GM-sourced ‘Cobra’ turbo diesel that displaces 6.5 liters and makes 300 horsepower.

The CombatGuard, which may or may not have been styled after the UNSC Warthog from the Halo series, isn’t just durable; it’s innovative. The prototypes showcased at Eurosatory were equipped with IMI’s “Bright Arrow” remote weapons station, which is essentially an electro-optical jammer that can destroy or disrupt incoming missiles and rocket-propelled grenades.

All eight occupants are housed inside a super strong monocoque capsule that offers a high level of ballistics protection. For more safety, the entirety of the exterior has been reinforced, including the floor, which was designed to deflect land mines.

IMI, the one-time manufacturer of the Desert Eagle handgun and the folding ‘CornerShot’ weapon accessory, designed the CombatGuard to be mobile, tough, and intimidating. After looking at this thing, we’re a little too frightened to argue with them.

Russia Starts Missiles Delivery For Su-30MKM Jets Designed For Malaysia

17:05 17.03.2015

The Su-30MKM, designed specifically for Malaysia's Royal Air Force, is armed with several air-to-air and air-to-surface missiles with ranges of about 75 miles. By 2011, the country purchased 18 Su-30MKMs from Russian Irkut Corporation.

Russia has started delivering missiles for Malaysia's Sukhoi Su-30MKM fighters, manufactured by Russia's Irkut Corporation, the head of Russia's state arms exporter Rosoboronexport's regional department told RIA Novosti in an interview on Tuesday.

"We are currently providing after-sales service for Su-30MKM, fighters, including the supply of all necessary spare parts and repair services, as well as the supply of aircraft munitions," Vladimir Ereschenko, who is in charge of the Rosoboronexport delegation at the LIMA-2015 exhibition taking place in Malaysia, said.

Malaysia signed a $900-million contract with the Irkut Corporation for the delivery of 18 SU-30MKMs in August 2003. The country received all jets by 2011.

The Su-30MKM, designed specifically for Malaysia's Royal Air Force, is armed with several air-to-air and air-to-surface missiles with ranges of about 75 miles.

According to Rosoboronexport, the company exceeded its export projections by $22 million in 2014, despite being subject to Western economic sanctions, imposed on key Russian companies due to the situation in Ukraine.

Ok, here is the input on mig29nm.

Proposed by Airod and Malaysia's Sukhoi Technical Centre.
- airframe will have be extended 6000 hours from the current 4000 hours. In short migs will have 2000+ hours on the airframes after upgrade
- cft will be add on the aircraft’s dorsal spine aft of the cockpit. 30% increase in combat radius.
- radar, cockpit and avionics will be replace with latest.
- The work would be done in Malaysia under licence from RAC MiG.

LIMA: Malaysian maritime patrol battle heats up

By: Greg Waldron Langkawi

Maritime patrol and surveillance were the most prominent themes of this year's LIMA show, as big manufacturers jockeyed to promote their various solutions for the mission.

Industry sources say that Kuala Lumpur is in the process of crystallising a requirement for six to eight long-range maritime patrol aircraft (MPA).

The potential requirement attracted attention from a range of companies including Boeing, Saab, Dassault, and Indonesian Aerospace.

Boeing brought its Maritime Surveillance Aircraft (MSA) technology demonstrator to the show. The type appeared on the static line, and the US airframer briefed media and officials on the MSA's capabilities. A modified Challenger 605 business jet, the unarmed MSA is optimised for high altitude, broad area surveillance.

Saab, Dassault, and Indonesian Aerospace also displayed models of MSA and MPA solutions on their stands.

This is a significant change from the last iteration of the show in 2013, when the only company to actively promote an MPA aircraft was Alenia Aermacchi in the form of its ATR 72MP, a variant of the popular ATR 72-600.

Indonesian Aerospace, which has put forward its CN235 MPA, said it is working on mounting torpedoes under the aircraft's wings - an Indonesian navy CN235 appeared at the show's static line.

It is also looking at ways to add two torpedoes in a recessed cavity under the CN235 MPA's fuselage, which would give the type the ability to carry four torpedoes. It adds that the aircraft's ramp is useful for dropping life rafts and other survival essentials.

For a country with a long coast line and extensive economic interests at sea, Malaysia has limited maritime surveillance capabilities. It operates just four King Air 350 aircraft in the maritime surveillance mission.

Events in recent years have highlighted the growing importance of the maritime domain in Southeast Asia. In early 2013, Kuala Lumpur was caught off guard by the incursion of 200 Filipino gunmen in Malaysia's eastern state of Sabah, which resulted in an armed confrontation with Malaysian military forces. Kuala Lumpur eventually crushed the interlopers with artillery, air strikes and ground forces, but the incident highlighted the vulnerability of Malaysia's long coastlines.

In addition, Beijing is becoming increasingly assertive about disputed territorial claims in the South China Sea, obliging countries such as Malaysia, Vietnam, and the Philippines to improve their ability to monitor the ocean domain away from their shores.

LIMA 2015: Boeing comes out fighting with AH-6i

18th March 2015 - 6:00
by Darren Lake in Langkawi

user posted image

Boeing is squaring up to challengers in the light attack helicopter market by pointing to the key differentiators of the AH-6i that the company believes give it an advantage over competitors such as MD Helicopters.

Speaking at LIMA 2015, Dave Brostrom, Boeing’s regional director attack and vertical helicopter lift business development, said that there was strong interest in the region for the AH-6i, not least from Malaysia, which has requested pricing for six, 12 and 24 aircraft. He added that there had also been strong interest from the Philippines and Bangladesh.

Southeast Asia is a target region for Boeing as is the Middle East. The launch customer for the AH-6i is the Saudi Arabian National Guard, which has 24 aircraft on order plus options.

Brostrom said that several other customers in the region were close to signing letters of agreement and that the reason the company had been unable to bring the aircraft to LIMA 2015 is that it conflicted with customer demonstrations in the US.

Brostrom said that the key discriminators for the AH-6i revolve around the fact that it had been engineered to give the highest possible performance in an aircraft of its class.

‘It has a little bit better integration. It’s pretty clean,’ he stated. Key to this has been leveraging technologies from the Apache AH-64 attack helicopter.

That includes an avionics software package that has 89% commonality with the Apache. ‘The software is designed for an attack helicopter pilot, it’s not a commercial off the shelf package,’ Brostrom stated.

The aircraft also has multiple weapon configurations and is capable of firing a range of guided missiles and rockets, including the Hellfire. Brostrom said that the gross take-off weight of the AH-6i is 2132kg with a ‘useful load’ of 1089kg, meaning it can have a high weapons load out.

If you're asking why Sukhoi team is doing on MiG aircraft, that's because both Sukhoi and RSK-MiG are under Russian's United Aircraft Company. When Algeria rejected MiG-29SMT from Russia, Russia gave them Su-30MKA instead(while those MiG rejects were later absorbed into Russian air force).

LIMA 2015 Day 2: Fulcrums for Sukhois

Marhalim Abas March 18, 2015 Airshow

LANGKAWI: AS I am leaving for home tomorrow (March 19) this will be the last update from the legendary isle of Langkawi.

The news of the day was announced by Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein at a press conference today. He said he hoped the decommissioning of the Mig-29 Fuclrum will help to boost the serviceability of the RMAF Sukhoi Su-30MKM fleet

“Of course we need to think about the future. But at the same time we must work with the industry to ensure the highest serviceability levels of the Sukhois. We hope that this could be achieved following the decommissioning (Fulcrum),” he said when asked about whether or not the government will replaced the Fulrums which is scheduled to be retired by year end.

As for the replacement itself, Hishammuddin said it depended on threats faced by the country and the economic situation.

Meanwhile, contracts to be signed at LIMA 2015 on Day 3 (March 13) will mainly be for maintenance and support of the Armed Forces current assets and not new ones.

In the meantime, the digital camouflaged Nuri helicopter M23-01 was seen at the rotary wing side of the LIMA 2015 static display.

The helicopter is expected to be officially handed over on Friday. The digital camouflage is an experimental one and whether or not it will be the official livery will depend entirely on the Army.

The helicopter, is a bone stock Nuri as the NUP4 (digital cockpit upgrade) is on hold pending RMAF evaluation of the first example, M23-36 which is in service with the 3rd Squadron. The Army is expected to operate 15 Nuris while RMAF will only use 12.

Meanwhile, at the Stride (the Defence Ministry R&D arm, displayed among others unmanned vehicles, an UUV and an UGV. Not much details are available but the UGV is developed in collaboration with Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. The UGV was fitted with an M4-type rifle in its trials but for the show, the gun was removed.

The UUV above is fitted with a side scan sonar and EO/IR camera. It is electrically driven by two propellers.

In other news, Thales announced the delivery of two AMASCOS missions systems to the RMAF. The AMASCOS systems will be fitted to the RMAF Beech 200 aircraft, two of which are already in service.
