A Pocong is a 'ghost', one that is trapped within its own body... a body that has been wrapped in a Muslim burial shroud, usually white in colour, and tied at the feet, neck and at the top of the head. Traditionally the soul of the deceased will stick around for forty days after death, however, if the ties in the shroud are not loosened at this time the soul (trapped in the body) will leave the grave in protest, seeking release.

It is more than a little unsettling to imagine a dead body leaving the grave but even more so thinking about one still wrapped and tied within a shroud. As the legs are trapped the Pocong hops to move around, though earlier stories describe Pocong as gliding along the ground in a standing position and sometimes, rarely, rolling along the ground.

If you are able to capture a Pocong it is said that you will become very wealthy.

Once the ties in the shroud have been freed the soul will depart.

Different communities in these regions have varying details to this legend. In Malaysia this ghost is often called Hantu Bungkus – The Wrapped Ghost.
