QUOTE(pch4936 @ Feb 3 2015, 11:41 AM)
I have tried to play these MOBA games, mostly because my friends play them and they want me to play also. But I didn't have enough time to learn it and when I first tried to play, it was with my friends and other players, so it was very difficult and not fun to play. Since then, I have given up on playing, but now I want to give it another try.

I have probably played 3 hours of LoL, and 1 hour of DOTA 2. I heard that it takes a lot of time to learn the game.
My question is, how long does it usually take to get the hang of everything and start having fun?
I've decided to go with DOTA 2, but is it easy to switch to LoL (or HoN) afterwards?
And any beginner tips? (I haven't started playing the game yet, so if there is a guide worth reading, let me know)
Thanks!  notworthy.gif

You are asking us, Dota fans and players and we will say whatever it is right. But however, it all depends on your own preference. I started playing Dota when I was 12 year old and that time I was only playing v 5.84. It takes time to learn, back then I used to go to internet cafe and keep watching people play and learn how to last hit, how to move my fingers faster to cast skill and all. The most important part for me was I must play with my friends because we will learn everything together. I'd say it'll probably take around a few months for you to acquire the basic and once you got the basic just aim for improvement. Although I started playing when I was 12, but my playing time keeps fluctuate so I'd say my experience is just around 2 years. I'm in my 20's.

Thanks for your reply, do you need to spend money on items and stuff as your level gets higher?

Nope, it's all free and you don't have to spend for anything. But there is always a choice for you to spend if you want to get hero's set and all. Yup. For me, I've spent around Rm150 so far.

Check some video guides. A good started would be to watch Purge's vids on youtube. He's got a guide called Welcome to Dota, you suck! thats a good video to watch for basics

One of my friend funnytone, started DotA for the first time in his entire life like 2 months ago. Took around a month to get the hang of it, now can perform better than some people with experience from DotA 1.

Getting the hang of it should be easy depending on how much effort you actually put in to learn up e.g. discussing with people (post mortem), reading guides, watching replays, trial & error etc etc.

But to be good at it takes some time as you need to be familiar with all the heroes out there so that you know how to handle them when you face them. I suggest to play with people around you level (or just go solo in public) so that you don't get dragged to high level games & end getting more stress.

Thanks, I definitely need to put some time aside for the game. Do you play any other MOBA games? If you do, is it easy to switch between them?

Nahh, just DotA....I rather pick up a MMORPG than another MOBA. Logically switching between shouldn't be a problem, but to gain in-depth knowledge of all the items & heroes is time consuming.

These games tend to be characterized by their high skill ceiling, i.e. there are cases where people can play for years and still not be good at the game because there's just so much you can do/learn. I suggest you give all the free-to-play MOBAs a try and see which one suits you most. Don't listen to fan talk about which is better etc. as we all have our own opinions (often biased).

Purge also mentioned that he's reworking his welcome to DOTA guide. So keep a look out for the updated version. Looks like its back to DOTA school for me as well.

There are so many guides around. Pick author 1 suit you the most.

Unlike last time in dota. There's no 1 teaching. U gotta download replay then watch and learn. It is pretty easy to get decent nowadays. Every essential point are stated in these guide.

Merlini vid is pretty helpful i suppose although i never seen 1 of it.
