I find hamsters one of the most entertaining small pet to watch and care for. Not hard to take care la.. you need to learn more about them that's all. Trust me.. dogs are harder.. need to pay for their vaccination, medicine, grooming.. lol..
*
Yups. I 100% agree with you. Only people who really love hamsters would say this hahahah...

QUOTE(Mingkiat1989 @ Feb 19 2007, 01:59 AM)
can we put two different hamster together? or is it better to put two same hamster together?? Will they end up fighting??
*
Yes, they will fight. NEVER RISK IT.

QUOTE(Mingkiat1989 @ Feb 19 2007, 02:34 AM)
Hahahaha.. but not nice lo.. so if the same type of hamster, will they fight also?
*
Same type, if not from same shop or from same litter, they will fight till death. Really should avoid. If you wanna breed, you need to be extra careful, give a spacious cage... but I would say do not breed unless you got a good purpose.

QUOTE(BlueHeng @ Feb 19 2007, 03:49 PM)
I wonder does petshop open today...
*
Nopes... today I went to Ikano.... Pet Safari not open... I know Petsmore is open but majority of petshops would open tomorrow.

Hamsters sometimes freeze in moments... like go blur and dazed a bit... it's normal lah coz it occurs sometimes... it even occurs in gerbils and rabbits, not a sign of peeing.... The peeing after it freeze or during the dazing period means it's scared till pee lah hahahahahah...

Hamsters do bite... and if they bite, it is not fatal but it would be wise to get a tetanus shot. If you already gotten that injection, make sure it is not more than 3 years got the tetanus vaccine will die out in 3 years in the body.

Anyway, once a hamster bites you, just wash with water and soap, wash with dettol also and apply a plaster... I have been bitten numerous times by not only hamster but many MANY animals... nothing ever happened to me coz I make sure I have tetanus injection.

Tetanus not that expensive... some clinics RM60... I think government clinic RM20... you go check. Normally people turning 17 or 16 get tetanus shot at school.

bitten before by my white face robo... it was a deep cut but I was not worried bcoz mine was a home-breed, not those pet shop one that we dunno their health.
if got bitten by pet shop hammies, better go clinic
*
That is not true... home bred ones can also carry diseases like the ones from petshops... coz originally they are petshop stock. The best is always take precaution, if infection occurs, go to the clinic to get it cleaned and a jab. Never think that home bred hamsters do not carry disease like the ones from pet shops.

QUOTE(kembara @ Feb 22 2007, 11:43 AM)
hehehe one of beautiful experience in having hamsters was when we feed them..
my russian campbell..when i pour spoons of food into the bowl...all of them jump in, but without biting or fight seriously la...fun to watch them eating together..
hmm.gif why dont saperated now??
as long as i remember..the saperation must be done as soon as possible..as sifus always said its better safe than suffer..before they fight,so better you saperated

Araille..
show la ur syrian picture...

to all sifu,
i got a crazy sapphire female winter white..of course i had saperated her..
because she cannot go with other ww in the clan like before..
even his sister and mother..i dont know why la..
the mother and sister look like very hate her..and she also very hate them.. rclxub.gif
but bucky the male crazymouse give me love them all hahaha tongue.gif
may be females fighting because of male in hamsters clan??it is true??
*
Not many people know why they fight but can say the possibility is for dominance.... any female or male can be the dominant hamster in a clan, so it is very normal to see animals fighting in a clan but it is also cruel lah to do it... so it is always best to seperate the one that is always the fighter... if every hamster fights with 1 hamster, then take out the loner. If it gets bullied also, better seperate coz a hamster can get bullied to death.

QUOTE(BlueHeng @ Feb 22 2007, 04:06 PM)
Dunnola.. it's like robos cannot be tamed like that.. keep running around! And occasionally u grab wrongly and it'll bite you. LOL.. today I just observed something disgusting bout my ww.. I gave it mealworms and for some dumb reason he stored it in it's cheek pouch. Then I saw it taking the mealworm from his mouth.. the worm was still moving and alive!! blink.gif
*
Wah... he put live mealworms into his mouth? Better you cut the heads off... coz got people tell me that the mealworms can bite the insides of the cheeks and hurt the hamster... well, just be careful only lah.

QUOTE(fantagero @ Feb 23 2007, 05:36 PM)
hi u guys all... wanna ask..
my brother's ham seems to be canibal.. huhuh
3 hams.. but got this one ham.. lone ranger.. so, the other two always stick together.. the prob is.. the lone ranger like to bit this small ham.. jsut now. realised the small one bitten so deep.. huuhh... about 3cm i guess.. but the wound seem dah lama.. the blood beku already..
but just now. i observed that the lone ranger smells the blood on the body of small one. , and try to bit the small one again.. huhuh

so worry.. any suggestiong??
my bro claims all three sibling.. huhuh
*
I think Syrian hamster lah.... possibility could be Syrian... actually, siblings or breeding pairs also can fight... this is why most of us advice people to seperate the hamsters since hamsters do like living alone.

if we cut the heads off, the mealworms still alive (moving) or not..
seems my hamsters dont like to eat the died one.. prefer to catch which are moving..
*
QUOTE(BlueHeng @ Feb 23 2007, 10:39 PM)
cut off heads ah? my hamster don't seem interested in dead worms.. lol.. i don't think hamster so stupid to let the worms bite their cheek right? If it's painful the hamster should 'eject' it immediately.. lol
*
Well, it was adviced by some Singaporean hamster keepers... seems they do not like the idea of feeding mealworms to hamsters hahahah... but my hamsters eat mealworms in a smart way, they really chew the head first before they put into their cheek pouches.

House? hide house or cage?

You cannot feed only cabbage often since it can make them sick.

Hi,

I had made a new House for my Hamster rclxms.gif
Just need 1 day to finish it. Look nice and feel happy.
All the material are free.
*
Wow... you got it for free? I also want those clear plastic but then I do not know any factories.... What did you use to drill those holes?

This kinda tank design is quite popular for birds and chincillas... expensive also. In Singapore a small one already cost $150 and more.... hahaha... but theirs I think different type of plastic so that is why expensive.

UPDATES FOR PEOPLE!!!

I just went to Pet Safari, I'm very very impress with the new cages for sale. Seems like a company is manufacturing cages that look like storage boxes. Light clear coloured plastic with a metal mesh as a door above the tank.... also inside comes with a plastic hide house, wheel and bottle I think.... prices around RM80 to RM100 something. Well, I'd buy one but then I got too many hamsters to give such luxury but if you guys only have 1 or 2 hamsters, it might look really nice and neat at home. The best thing about it is.... you can still see your hamster clearly without the inteference of cage bars blocking or the thick plastic of a storage box.... the box is clear so can see nicely... then the sides are high so if your hamster dig, no woodshavings or hay or sandbath can come out.... thumbup.gif

hi,

actually the plastic sheet sell on the hardware shop.

Cost u about RM 400 for 8feet x 4 feet.

After that, u need to cut the plastic sheet to the shape that u want.

And use Hand drill machine to make the hole.

Finally use rivet and angle bar on the corner.

U can get this item all in the hardware shop, but make sure is a big hardware shop

selling all kind of thing.
On the new cage as u mention, i actually own 1 but is small 1.

I decide to make a big 1 for my hamster.

Malacca selling about RM 99.00 is the big 1 (double storey with tube circle around the cage).
*
Hahah... but you got it for free so that is really worth it. Yups, a member here called Acey made a tank using the plastic sheets... cost him RM300 I think...

Ohh... you have one of those new tanks? I find it nice and worth it if we only have 1 or 2 hamsters... but for me... 20 hamsters? Hahahaha... die.....

Yee, how come I didn't realize got such cages for sale (Anyone have photo of it?). Just went to The Pet Safari to buy Prestige hamster mix as recommended by you guys. My hamster, Kimichi was fed with Hoppel Mobbel hamster mix but out of stock in The Pet Family and Petsmore.

I brought Royal Canin Fit 32 from Petsmore Kepong too, gave one piece to Kimichi, he sniff sniff but don't wanna eat. Maybe full oredy after eating Prestige mix.

Saw the Breeder Select cat litter 6L selling for rm22 in The Pet Safari, no smaller package huh? My room still smelly even though only one hamster, currently I'm using Sluis bedding. So wanna try this cat litter to reduce the smell. Hun, do you mix the cat litter with other bedding material?
*
At the entrance mah... just next to where the prestige is... today I go gasak 2 packets prestige, 2 harry hamster and 2 habitrail staple.... then bedding.... and a few bowls... came to RM106.. die...

Breeder Select RM19.90 at Pet Family.... I think at some places got RM16 but dunno where... no, do not mix with woodshavings... coz wood shavings will just keep the urine smell around. 6L ok mah, can last long time hahahah...

one more question... if compare with Woody Pet, which is better in term of effectiveness in absorbing smell...?
*
The recycled paper cat litter is better. Almost same price anyway.... better go for the Breeder's Select/Celect.... Pet Family RM19.90 and Pet Safari RM22... but I bought from Pet Family and they only had 2 packs left.

QUOTE(BlueHeng @ Feb 26 2007, 05:50 PM)
Woody pet is what? Wood shavings also? If that is so, IMO, the cat litter is better...

Oh guys, do I need to feed the leftover mealworms? LOL.. I only have 1 hamster and he can't finish the mealworms.. will the mealworms die if they don't have food?
*
Mealworms, you can freeze them in the freezer to keep longer... of course dead lah... but if you do not want them to turn into beetles or die faster.... then keep in your fridge coz the coolness will slow down their metabolism... hahaha... later your mom yell at you. Anyway, to feed them, just give oats, leftover dry bread, biscuits, sawi... as long you do not cover up the container and there is good circulation, can last some time.

Well, for these types of bedding, you can check it out at Pet Safari.... Dunno lah, I hate Woody Pet.... but I like Careline Wood pellet cat litter LOL.... BC so far so good for my gerbils that are allergic to wood shavings...

Anyway. new thread in the making... will open it once completed. First page of new thread is gonna be information page so it would be best to post something informative in the 1st page. Easier for new hamster owners to read.

Woody pet got a strong wood smell... stronger than wood shavings hahahah... so I dun really like lah... Careline the woody smell is milder. Both kind of pellets absorb pee very well. I also like careline coz cheaper by Rm2.... yah... I know rm2 very little but then every ringgit is important to me... hehehehhe....

Woodt Pet and Careline wood pellet cat litter acts the same. Both are equally good at absorbing pee and the urine smell. They are better than corn cob bedding.

In my opinion, breeder celect is better for long term use.. like for rodents where you change the bedding once in 1 or 2 weeks...woody pet I think better for rabbits litter box. But the priceof BC ...aiyo... expensive.

My friend with Syrians said that if you toilet train your Syrian, you only need to change the BC once a month or even 2 months.
*
Yah... BC is better... but the price... too bad I can't use it for all my rodents... only those with allergies. But BC won't work on rats... their pee stink so bad, sure pengsan.... so my rats use Litter Star silicon pellet cat litter... rm13 1 bag... but at least can last me 3 weeks rather than change wood shavings every 2 days. Luckily hamster not that bad yet hahahah....

All hamsters can be trained to use toilets... but they won't necessary use it all the time. Place a toilet hut(you can buy from petshops) normal brands are like habitrail lah. Just fill it with cat litter sand or hamster bath sand, they will then see it as a toilet to pee and poo. Hamsters like corners so they will always pee at the corners of their tanks or cages. Yes, you have to train from young coz it is out of habit. How to train? Hahaha... i just put the bedding that is wet with pee inside the toilet hut.... then the hamster will know where to do. But not every hamster will follow this since my Caesar who used to use his toilet, now he doesn't want to use it anymore.

ha ha ha... now Syrian herself ask how to do it...? laugh.gif

EDITED:
1. how to tell if my female Syrian is pregnant...? any obvious physical changes or mood swings..?

2. if she is, can i hold her as usuall...?
*
A hamster that is pregnant will show a pear shape when she stands upright. Also she will be bigger. Some do show mood swings. If your hamster is tame then you can still hold her. Give nesting material such as tissue and hay, your hamster will use it to build a nest.

Feed some extra food such as mealworms, crickets, cooked meat... you can give cheese too but limit that since out cheese got added salt. Anyway, I just breed alot of winter whites and campbells but the pregnancy thing is almost the same. Normally after 1 week you will notice a small bump but it's small... 2nd week she will look fat and bloated, also nipples are more visible... then around end of 3rd week will birth.... of course during the time when got pups, better not touch her, just let her be and give food and water. Place cage in a quiet and safe area, cover the tank partially with a cloth for more security... You can safely handle the pups around their 2nd week of age.
