*
Hahaha.... wood can stink but if you get one with no wood floor then won't lah... Normally when got a floor in the hide house then the hamster may pee on it.

1.5ft is like the same size as Safari, Playground, Space station.... yah, same size as joonalooidog... that is 1.5ft... well, not really 1.5 lah... if measure, the base is only 1.2 or 1.3ft only.

sifoo sifoo... my housemate has jz swapped the cages of his hamsters.... ever since they are in their new respective cages, i noticed 2 of them the hair is alwiz wet... i'm suspecting wet tail disease.... because i've read before somewhere saying that one of the cause of wet tail disease is they couldnt adapt to the new surrounding... is this true??... its been 2 days and his hamsters are getting thin... but they are still active as usual....
*
Hmmm.... the wetness is it around the tail? Also the head and front paws? Yah.... it could be wet tail if that is the case but then that is strange since I do that quite often to my hamsters and they do not get any sort of sickness like that from switching cages.... the hamsters are kept indoors?

QUOTE(joanalooidog @ Feb 14 2007, 08:43 AM)
My tank is a 1.5ft tank. After placing the cup, aroma burner, food bowl, bottle, toilet roll, then no place liao. If ok lah, better get a 2ft. Price diff is just around RM5.
I got a 4 ft toyogo box, use to house them also.
Later will post some pics of my 4ft toyogo (house 6 hamster in 3 slots, each slot got 2).
Purpose is to ease me during CNY break, no need to bring back 6 tanks back home town, haha.........Although its a bit cramp, but just one week, my hams will understand one..... tongue.gif
*
4ft Toyogo box? Wah... need that LOL.... How much is it and where you got it?

QUOTE(dazzle @ Feb 14 2007, 02:10 PM)
I try this method but still can't define the hamster sex.

But tell the seller give me 1 male and 1 female. Do not he is honest on this sex.

Anyway, thank for this info.

My hamster look happy now and they like to the vegetable.

1 more thing, why my hamsters don't like to sit on top the wood shaving.

They will push off all wood to a side and sleep on the flat floor without the wood.

Do you experience this.
*
Why you want 1 male and 1 female? You know that when you buy from the same shop... you got high chance of buying brother and sister? Do you want brother and sister to mate and have babies? Do you care that the babies can be born with problems?

Also, hamsters can breed every 20 to 25 days.... and every litter got an average of 6 babies... are you ready to provide good homes or sell cheaply to petshop for the sake of space and get a quick buck? Petshops do not care, they won't mention to you about what would the outcome be if you buy a male and female.... it is such a risky thing to get from the same shop.

Also, if they breed, are you ready to see dead bodies? Coz sometimes the hamsters can kill and cannibalise their young....

QUOTE(Mingkiat1989 @ Feb 14 2007, 03:12 PM)
yea.. i cant believe too.. next morning i woke up, i see red ants all over her body
is like the red ants bit the whole skin out.. can see the skull man..
so disgusting..!
i was like OMG!!  ohmy.gif  why suddenly got red ants there wan?
*
Red ants are attracted to any left over food in the tank or cage.... when it sees that the food is not edible for ants, then they attack the next thing in the cage, the hamster. Red ants do not care the hamster alive or dead, to them, it is another mean of food. Never place cages on floors, best is on tables. If prone to ant attacks, get ant poison.

yea! i guess is the sweet things that make the red ants come.. but i stil dont understand, i feed them, the next day nth wrong.. den after that i clean the cage, the next morning i wake up, see red ants all over the cage.. so horrible..
*
Have you stepped on red ant nest before? I did.... and they bite.... you know why they bite? Coz I stepped on their nest, kacau them....

I am guessing your female kinda kacau the red ants when they entered the cage.... so when 1 red ant bites, another will bite... then chemical signals will tell all ants to bite. Your other hamster is safe due to maybe never interfere.

how come they go kacau the red ant nest ?

Aiyoh, ant nest i give example of my own experience lah doh.gif shakehead.gif . I am trying to say is if you kacau a red ants, sure they all attack. So if the red ants go into the cage to find food, the hamster kacau them, sure lah the red ants attack the hamster.

Another scenario would be your hamster died from unknown reasons so the red ants out of nature attracted to the body and try to eat it.... still... red ants... ai, they are a pest.

Sometimes they simply come. I got some hamster cages that got black ants and I dunno where they come from but black ants are not so fierce and my hamsters ignore them.

What you can do is place some ant poison lah. Or repellant. I use repellant coz safer. I think you can find those in certain hardware stores like Ace...

i also experienced that..but luckily not red ant la..when i feed them with chicken..may be some leftover attract the ant...so that day i clean all my cage and tanks...
i think no need sweet thing to attract ant..my syrian like to store food in the bedding..instead of foodbowl..his tank sometimes attract black ant..not the red one la...

but my russian campbell cage attract another creature...house lizard-cicak..sometime the cicak go inside the cage...but will went out with half tail.. whistling.gif i wonder what my campbell did to the cicak la..
btw is lizard dangerous to hamster?? hmm.gif

hun, your dog kill rat??
not your pet rat rite?? flex.gif

Hahah... no lah, my rats are all fine.... even the lost one, no dead bodies so i think she really found a safe place to run away.... silly rat... Now I got 6 rats after I bought 2 new ones on Monday tongue.gif

Cooked or not? Hm..my uncle have one bad experience...

He feed his hammy with those raw chicken internal organ..maybe kidney..actually not him feed those hammy but his doughter. Previously, all the hammy are tame...very tame. After feed them with chicken, not all, but some of his hammy turn into agressive and tend to bite their own owner.

anybody face the same situation? So, right now, Im not feed my hammy with meat..mealworm is acceptable  biggrin.gif
*
No, meat does not make hamsters aggressive. I got a friend that feeds her hamsters raw meat, not one of her hamsters turned aggressive... of course I do not follow that raw meat diet and feed mine with cooked chicken meat.

Meat is a good source of protein.... actually, better than eggs coz hamsters like the taste of chicken better than eggs.

They will never turn aggressive unless you happen to have the taste of chicken on your fingers and they happen to think that your finger is food so they may bite out of instinct. Hamsters never turn aggressive unless someone harmed them before.

Mealworms is not protein.... mealworms contains fat. Protein comes from crickets more.

Normally hamsters don't like egg white.... have you tried giving them scrambled egg? Hamsters are never vegetarians.

No. Syrians do not change fur nor will their fur be greasy like campbells...

If they appear healthy, then maybe nothing much is wrong. Ask your friend to feed more vitamins to them and maybe place them in a warm section of the house and see got improvement or not.

Syrians DO NOT CHANGE FUR!!!! We were mentioning winter whites that change fur.

QUOTE(the_catacombs @ Feb 15 2007, 06:44 PM)
they are placed in a warm section adi... these days everyday also vr hot in malacca.... the place where he kept his hamsters (and mine) has bright sunlight... of coz, not direct sunlight lah.... the hamsters are placed in second floor jz beside the stairs....
noler... syrians dont change bulu one lah.... no such thing... their bulu only grows and grows and grows (for males).... as for females, their bulu wont overgrow...  icon_rolleyes.gif
*
Really weird like that.... sometimes if too warm, a hamster can drool... maybe the hamsters drooled? Then they groom their fur till wet? Not very sure but it sounds possible.

QUOTE(Only_Human @ Feb 15 2007, 06:57 PM)
Em ......
Can I ask 1 question  ohmy.gif
Did the hamster keep food in mouth ?

I saw my hamster keep 1 food inside the mouth ~
and 1 hold in hand for eating !

Then after a while ~ i saw him "muntah" the food form month then eat that food
= =  shocking.gif

It this normal ar ?
*
My goodness, looks like you never read up on hamsters shakehead.gif

Hamsters are hoarders... like chipmunks and certain squirrels... they have cheek pouches that helps them to carry food. Hoard means to collect and keep.... and I the name "hamster" means hoarder.

Why they do this? Well, hamsters are nocturnal and being nocturnal, they need to act fast so they do not get caught by predators like owls and snakes. In the night, it is quite dangerous to sit and eat openly. So they will collect food in their mouths quickly and bring it back to their hide holes or dens and keep their food there. "Hamster" in German and Swedish means "to hoard".

Some hamsters do hibernate so hoarding helps them to have a supply of food at hand during winter.

Hamsters live in burrows and they do have a special room to keep their collected food. This is why sometimes you will notice a corner of the cage or tank got lots of food in the woodshavings. My hamsters either put at 1 corner of the tank or keep inside their hide house...

QUOTE(kembara @ Feb 15 2007, 07:22 PM)
this habit actually develope from their nature..
hamster in their wild will collect food and keep in their mouth/cheek pocket..may be because afraid of predator..then when it feel safe it will eat that..or it will drop all the food when arrive at home..
*
Already explained. Hoarding is a natural act and yah, it is to keep away from predator when they wanna find food to eat but the dropping food part is not correct lah. Cheek pouches are meant to collect food. This is why most rats do not collect food, they do not have cheeck pouches.

*
Ohhh.... that... I thought you meant that they have cheek pouches to drop food. LOL....

Yes, they will clean out their pouches to hoard away the food. Storing food lah is more clear than say dropping.... coz dropping to me is like buang food. tongue.gif

Aiyoh... go buy Breeder's Celect@Choice... you no need change every week... once in 2 weeks... the recycled newspaper absorb smell and urine better than corn cob. Also just Rm19 for 1 bag.... can last you more than 1 month I think.... or you get Careline Wood cat litter... Rm16 1 bag.... can last the same way also. I am using this for 2 gerbils and my hedgehog tongue.gif

Hamsters, they urinate so they smell lah.

There are many brands... wood shavings and corncob is the smelliest. 2 brands that are expensive but rarely smell would be Woody Pet, Careline Wood Pellet cat litter and Breeder's Celect/Choice. Go Pet Safari to find, they sell. Pets Wonderland do not sell. Pet Safari and Pet Family got.

Hi guys, i never see the Chinese hamster...i just got refer to the 1st page, and Im shocked...Chinese Hamster got longer tail compared to Rc? sweat.gif

user posted image

Other things that i can see is, theyre more smaller than RC..but the colour pattern is same...rite?

Are they more tame compare to RC? Because in my experience, Rc are very varies between agressive and tame, and it is depend on their owner
*
Well, Chinese hamsters come in only 2 colours... which is the agouti and dominant spot. No other colours... Yups, they got a longer tail and their body is longer, more mousy in features.

Erm... no one breeds them but Reanne... but she already stopped breeding them since no on interested in them. Chinese hamsters, some are tame and some are not. But so far, the ones Reanne has are super tame, they can cling to fingers and wrap themselves around the finger like a little bear... kinda cute since hamsters normally do not cling. This is more of a mouse feature.

QUOTE(Yaozz @ Feb 16 2007, 06:20 PM)
How do you all change the aquarium's bredding?
*
Scoop out or pour out. Some people use vaccum cleaner if the aquarium is big and made of glass. When there are urine stains, wash it with water and mild soap.

No, it is not harmful since they do not eat the toilet roll, just chew it...

Hamsters are the easiest pet. They died coz you got 2, then fight, body wounded, infections occur... so if you seperate them and with no treatment, their infections can become fatal and lead to death.

If it died after a fight,... then it could be infection or from injury... but after a year? Could be something else... hamsters have a life span of 2 to 3 years.
