As far as I know, there is no reason whatsoever that you can't have a cold drink or wash your hair during your period. Those sound like old-fashioned superstitions with nothing to back them up. With all due respect to your mother, I would suggest that you and she go to the library and check out a book on the female reproductive system. I'm sure you won't find anything scientific about those "old wive's tales" in a book written by medical experts, and perhaps that will calm your mother's fears and clear up any misconceptions she may have. Good luck!

Yea, most girls believe that. They will avoid cold drinks, cooling fruits/food/drinks, spicy food too. Some will also not wash their hair or shower with cold water.

I find that it does make the cramps worse, but other than that, no difference.

sorry for bumping an old thread, but i think, wimmin having period should cool their body down...
but not by drinking cold drink, lol...

among indians they use fenugreek (venthayam in Tamil)...
its a common herb/spice used in indian cookings... brownish in color...
for wimmin having period, they usually advise boiling these in hot water and drink the water...
it helps to cool the body and relieve the pain as well...

hi .. Cold is the thing that women's uterus and ovari fear most ... as the blood will cool down and disturb proper detox of the period from uterus/ ovari, which in turn resulting in the accumulated toxic in uterus / ovari that cause the tumor/ cancer disease ..

thus it's advisable for women to always keep their uterus/ ovari warm by avoiding cold stuff .

you want Scientific reason why old ppl ask to avoid cold drink ?
here you go....

when our body consume cold drink/food, our body produces more heat to level the coldness coming into the body...
when we consume something hot, it reverses and try to cool our body down...

simple example....
u drink hot water/soup... body start to sweat-> heat out, body feel colder...
u eat ice cream... body start to shiver, bulu roma naik, even get burning sensation as body spikes up the heat to compensate the coldness...

for women under period, body heat is the main issue...
making them feel tired, uncomfortable,pain...
for this, they consume something that cools the body down (not drink cold water !)...
warm water with some cooling herbals are the best choice...

this is the reason why your mums ask u not to drink cold water/ ice cream and stuff...
they are not stupid to blindly suggest it...just they don't know to explain to you...

inb4...washing your hair will cause your body to go into cold shock...
making it to produce more heat to sustain the external coldness from washing your hair...
if you dont dry your hair properly, the effect worsens...
means not only u going to get sick...its gonna be a very painful , uncomfortable and agonizing sick...

I don't know how it works, but since i don't usually take cold drinks (even in restaurant dinner i drink hot chinese tea), if i drink cold before my period, then i will get bad cramps.

Uterus like warm ... and fear Cold..

for most ladies with average body nature, cold drinks/ foods would bring long term effects and even diseases beyond expectation.

heed the advice from our ancient chinese wisdom and we are a lot much safer entire life.
