My mom won't allow me to drink iced drinks or chinese tea when I have period. The cold drinks will become warm few seconds after it goes into our body anyway. What do you girls think?

Yea, most girls believe that. They will avoid cold drinks, cooling fruits/food/drinks, spicy food too. Some will also not wash their hair or shower with cold water.

I find that it does make the cramps worse, but other than that, no difference.

It's strongly advisable for ladies... regardless the age, during period times, to avoid cold drinks directly taken out from fridge or drinks added with ice, or ice cream, or spicy stuff. If want drink, it's better to let it stand for 2 or 3 hours until back to room temperature.

The ancient wisdom of our ancestors actually make sense, because it's based on the ancient science of chinese medicine findings of human body.

Reasons (it's proven by latest modern research anyway) :-

- as stated by our forumer in previous post

- every lady's body nature is different; some are of "cool-type" and their ability to stand the cold nature food/ drinks during period will be relatively weaker than the rest of ppl.

however, even if other ladies are of relatively "less-cool-type", and they seems can put up with any cold food/ drinks during period time, when their age go up, they might start experiencing the various side effect of their habit of taking cold food/ drinks during period time.

- Period time for us ladies is a type of "Detox" in monthly basis. It's part of the human body nature for female.

cold food/ drinks after going into body, will make the internal part of uterus to suddenly "shrink" or pull back, and blood flow slower and the period cannot flow out smoothly and thoroughly. Spicy food stimulate the uterus making the period flow not as normal.

so the result is: every month if there're some remaining of period not flush out thoroughly it will left inside the uterus and become toxic that accumulate along the tissue of uterus. And as time go on it will accumulate into bigger and bigger lumps, randomly in the uterus, and become the potential root cause of the different type of uterus disease, example tumor, cancer, unable to have normal pregnancy, etc etc...

while the top point of our head there're some "穴位 - acupuncture point" that link to the different part of body including uterus.
there's also a chakra point on the top of our head.

So ur mum is for ur health well-being .....

There're some remedy to minimize the effect of cool food/ drinks to ladies :-

example:

- drink a cup of raw ginger water before taking some relatively cool food/ drinks when not in period time; if during period time it's best to avoid cold food/ drinks

- drink black sugar water regularly

-------------------------------------------------------------
Below is a simple remedy very, very helpful for ladies to regulate the period / cure period pain:-

*** Lotus root boil with chinese red date ***
-------------------------------------------------------------
frequency to drink : 1 or 2 times per week.

ingredients per serving :-

- lotus root : about 1 inch long per serving
can be found in supermarket like aeon, presto etc.. or u may also find it easily in pasar

- chinese red date: about 10 red dates - must take off the seeds so that it won't make your body heat up

- water: can cover the top of ingredients

- rock sugar / black sugar- optional.

- container - put in some container and put again inside a steamer

> boil for about 20 min to 30 min > serve when done.

Are there anything that you ladies can recommend taking after period? My housemate seems to be drinking some tea. blink.gif

i beg to differ.

if you dont keep fit (adopting a healthy living e.g. diet, exercise, etc), you will get those anyway, regardless you take cold water during period or not.

anyway, everyone's body react different. It's really up to you TS to listen to what your mom says.

i personally think this is BS. my mom, who's 60, didnt follow any of those chinese pantang. she's doing great at her age smile.gif

As far as I know, there is no reason whatsoever that you can't have a cold drink or wash your hair during your period. Those sound like old-fashioned superstitions with nothing to back them up. With all due respect to your mother, I would suggest that you and she go to the library and check out a book on the female reproductive system. I'm sure you won't find anything scientific about those "old wive's tales" in a book written by medical experts, and perhaps that will calm your mother's fears and clear up any misconceptions she may have. Good luck!

I've never heard this story about exposure to cold being unhealthy.

I imagine it might make cramps worse for some. Also losing much blood will tend to make you cold so it's good to stay warm. Normally I feel warmer than usual during the cycle and sensitive to cold around me so I dress warmly.

For me hot, spicy, greasy food and food with lots of sugar would be much worse than drinking cold water. But, that's just the way my body responds.

Best thing to do during is help body detox itself. Period goes away faster and there is much, much less pain. Women in my family get such terrible cramps they cannot get out of bed. I am an exception and this is what I do.

After period, take things that help your body replace blood! Red beets, goji, longan, spinach!

sorry for bumping an old thread, but i think, wimmin having period should cool their body down...
but not by drinking cold drink, lol...

among indians they use fenugreek (venthayam in Tamil)...
its a common herb/spice used in indian cookings... brownish in color...
for wimmin having period, they usually advise boiling these in hot water and drink the water...
it helps to cool the body and relieve the pain as well...

hi .. Cold is the thing that women's uterus and ovari fear most ... as the blood will cool down and disturb proper detox of the period from uterus/ ovari, which in turn resulting in the accumulated toxic in uterus / ovari that cause the tumor/ cancer disease ..

thus it's advisable for women to always keep their uterus/ ovari warm by avoiding cold stuff .

you want Scientific reason why old ppl ask to avoid cold drink ?
here you go....

when our body consume cold drink/food, our body produces more heat to level the coldness coming into the body...
when we consume something hot, it reverses and try to cool our body down...

simple example....
u drink hot water/soup... body start to sweat-> heat out, body feel colder...
u eat ice cream... body start to shiver, bulu roma naik, even get burning sensation as body spikes up the heat to compensate the coldness...

for women under period, body heat is the main issue...
making them feel tired, uncomfortable,pain...
for this, they consume something that cools the body down (not drink cold water !)...
warm water with some cooling herbals are the best choice...

this is the reason why your mums ask u not to drink cold water/ ice cream and stuff...
they are not stupid to blindly suggest it...just they don't know to explain to you...

inb4...washing your hair will cause your body to go into cold shock...
making it to produce more heat to sustain the external coldness from washing your hair...
if you dont dry your hair properly, the effect worsens...
means not only u going to get sick...its gonna be a very painful , uncomfortable and agonizing sick...

Uterus like warm ... and fear Cold..

for most ladies with average body nature, cold drinks/ foods would bring long term effects and even diseases beyond expectation.

heed the advice from our ancient chinese wisdom and we are a lot much safer entire life.
