I believe the others have answered this question. Basically crack on the backplate occurs because when your band "wraps" around your wrist, it is placing stress onto the rounded edge of the backplate, particularly if your wrist is small.
What SteelConnect does is that it extends the lugs to make it protruding, so less "wrap" around your wrist, and no contact with the backplate at all, thus minimizing, or even eliminating stress onto the plastic backplate.
And yes, that is the correct way of putting a NATO strap, I have one too.

About removing the original band to fit in the SteelConnect, you need either a springbar tool, or a very small screw driver, like the ones for electronics or glasses.
