It's not all about depth either imo. There has to be a balance. Once upon a time our bench consisted of a certain juan mata and kevin de bruyne. Top quality players no doubt,but with a certain level of quality,there also comes an expectation to be played for a certain number of minutes. When that expectation isn't met,they'll want out.

So the more quality a player has,the more he'll 'demand' game time, and that system just won't work because jose sticks to a first eleven,99% of the time.
