QUOTE(deodorant @ Dec 8 2014, 11:17 AM) MBP IMO. It's still plenty light and portable enough to do poser activities in starbucks and yet powerful enough to get real work done if needed. Just curious... but with Macs, is there something you can use for MS Office files? And is there a good torrent p2p client? Now that I'm not gaming, that's all I use laptops for... work and torrents. I'm looking for a new laptop but although I like how the Macbooks look, I have zero clue on Macs... Considering Macs this time around as any Windows laptop with equivalent Macbook form factor and battery life are way more expensive (like Thinkpad Carbon or Sony Z-series).

QUOTE(keelim @ Dec 8 2014, 12:03 PM) Initially I was comparing Macs and non-Macs laptop. I gave a "big" picture thought which then led me to get a Mac, reluctantly. Apple has successfully created an ecosystem for its hardware, which unfortunately, I am an unconscious victim. I have a few iPhones and iPads, the ever-confusing iCloud accounts, and potentially AppleTv. I hope the yet to be explored conveniences of staying in the ecosystem would facilitate the crappy iTunes streaming of my devices, seamlessly. I have since narrowed down to MBP and MBAir. Similarly, my applications are for web surfing, Microsoft office works (light), photo-editing, movies, torrents, pdfs, and lots of pdfs. Proprietary rights (software) are strongly enforced under Apple and I do foresee paying quite a premium for these. This applies to Microsoft office suite but the availability of "Parallel OS", standalone OS, and Microsoft365 will still allow Mac-user to work on office-based projects. The only issue is the price. Thoughts? Ya... you reminded me... freebie software... Right now, I'm still like a university kid... looking for cheapo freebie ways to download movies and do stuff like trimming movies, downloading videos from youtube, facebook, downloading MP3 (although these days that's mainly using my Android phone or tab) etc. Hmmm, maybe a Mac would cramp my style too much. Does anybody know if a Mac would connect seamlessly to an Android? Does it open in a file manager that lets you access any file or directory on the Android?

QUOTE(fcuk90 @ Dec 8 2014, 09:32 PM) currently i had already signed offer letter with one of the medium firm ( 1.5 yrs bond) ,btw the commence date start on mid jan 2015. The question is if I got Big4 SG offer , can I negotiate with the HR to release me without needing to pay for any compensation ? Of course you can negotiate... you can negotiate anything under the sun (except of course, what is illegal outright). BUT whether the negotiation will be successful for you, is entirely due to your powers of persuasion.

QUOTE(whereis the love @ Dec 11 2014, 03:32 PM) got transaction charge?i was about to open CIMB sg account to transfer money to Malaysia CIMB,heard the rate higher than money changer MBB2U.sg charges $$15 fee for every remittance to a Malaysia MBB account (max $$20K). When I logged in to CIMB Clicks today, there was an advertisement that they will rebate you S$15 for remitting money back to Malaysia. Normally it's just free remittance to a CIMB Malaysia account. But since I don't have a CIMB Malaysia account, I have never used it. So I have no idea whether they give a better/worse rate than MBB.

QUOTE(MsiaqweR @ Dec 12 2014, 09:38 AM) Reliable reports speculated it will strengthen to 2.70 by CNY next year. So why change now? Go one more step... sell RM/buy S$ now at 2.60, then buy RM/sell S$ next Chinese New Year at 2.70. How much of your own money will you bank on the reliability of the reports?

QUOTE(shoonyee89 @ Dec 17 2014, 09:20 AM) Hi, i wanna ask if im working in sg, is it advisable to use malaysia credit card there? Not a good idea. Visa/Mastercard/Amex and the card issuing bank both charge fees on foreign currency transactions. Generally the fees are around 2-3% of the transaction value. Unless you have a card that gives a cash rebate on overseas or foreign currency spending, you're just paying 2-3% more than you need to.

QUOTE(kevin613 @ Dec 23 2014, 08:22 PM) Their logic : company didn't ask you to apply pr, it's your own initiative, so you should bear the cost. LOL. They probably know it's against the law, and any "agreement"they made staff to sign, agreeing for salary to be deducted means nothing. Problem is they've done this to all their staff who applied pr (majority from India)and I'm the first to be exempted, and somehow the earlier victims knew about it cause they came asking me which part of cpf law states that employer must pay their share. I left the company not long after that, so I don't know if the earlier victims got their share of salary back from the company or not. If the premise is that since you have become PR, the company reduces your basic and pays CPF according to the law - the logic is sound. Assuming of course that you agree to the salary reduction. If you don't, the course of action is to renegotiate your employment contract as your residence and employment status have changed. Strictly speaking the basis of your existing employment contract has changed because the laws applicable to you and your employer are no longer the same. QUOTE(kevin613 @ Dec 23 2014, 10:31 PM) but according to the CPF Act, the employer is not allowed to deduct the employer's contribution from the employee's basic salary, there's nothing to negotiate about as any reduction is against the law. http://statutes.agc.gov.sg/aol/search/disp...3A0;rec=0#P1II-. The original employment contract is between the company and a WP/EP holder. The T&C in that contract are specific to the employment of a foreigner. Now the employee has become a PR. The laws applicable to the company and the PR employee are different. Would that original contract still hold? Alternatively, when an WP/EP employee loses his WP/EP for some reason. Does their existing employment contract hold, now that the employee has gone from a permit holder to tourist?

QUOTE(kevin613 @ Dec 24 2014, 09:36 AM) the contract states my name and passport number, which remains the same, and it didn't mention anything about foreigner/local/PR, and no specific T&C that says the contract will be nullified if the employee becomes PR. The HR did hand me a letter and wanted me to sign on it after i told them my PR application is approved, but i refused. they could've terminated me like some suggested here, but ultimately they gave in after i called MOM numerous times (including a conference call between HR, ME and MOM) to confirm what they wanted me to sign is against the law. tourist cannot be hired. when one loses his WP/EP, be it cancelled by employer, or revoked by enforcement agencies, then off he go... You're lucky to have a pretty tolerant employer. They could have simply served you notice that they are terminating your contract. There will be a clause in your contract where either party to the contract can end the contract by serving the specified notice period. You can resign by giving notice to the company and the company can give you the same notice and terminate your employment.

QUOTE(kevin613 @ Dec 25 2014, 12:14 PM) i left the company a month or 2 after i got my PR, so no harm done if they let me off any earlier, my PR is approved and i intend to leave anyway, besides, they need me at that point of time for a special assignment in japan, so was pretty sure they wont just terminate me. Good use of leverage. All the best.

QUOTE(titarium @ Jan 19 2015, 04:04 PM) PR must be renew every 5 years - it is just like you r driving license , you still hold the same driving license just that your eligibility on the road extends another 3- 5 years. It's actually your Re-Entry Permit that needs to be renewed every 5 years. Not your PR... which is evergreen, as long as you don't leave Singapore without a valid Re-Entry Permit (REP). As for the "basic T&C" to renew REPs,... with eREP (instant online renewal), I'm not so sure that each REP renewal is scrutinised anymore.

Saying that you have worked before and have studied this & that are great... but it still doesn't tell me what you can do and why an employer would want to pay you to do it for him.

Median starting salaries by faculty for the 2014 cohort from the 3 ocal universities. Should help address a lot of those "how much should I ask for" questions from newbies.

I also just cancelled my Singtel Mobile BB 50GB 3.6Mbps for $26.90. Couldn't find anyone to transfer the account to. Went for fibre broadband for not much more money each month.
But keeping my 12GB 3G voice & data plan... until MyRepublic becomes the 4th telco and launches as they promised, a voice plan with unlimited 4G data.
