QUOTE(seantang @ Dec 8 2014, 11:30 AM) Just curious... but with Macs, is there something you can use for MS Office files? And is there a good torrent p2p client? Now that I'm not gaming, that's all I use laptops for... work and torrents. I'm looking for a new laptop but although I like how the Macbooks look, I have zero clue on Macs... Considering Macs this time around as any Windows laptop with equivalent Macbook form factor and battery life are way more expensive (like Thinkpad Carbon or Sony Z-series). for Mac on office, there is 2 options; Open Office or Microsoft Office. Open Office is from open source, so its free. For torrent, bittorrent for Mac just works fine. Works flawlessly. Being using it for ages. Oh, and iirc the last 3 OS upgrade are free; Lion, Mountain Lion and Yosemite. This post has been edited by Mackiddo: Dec 8 2014, 02:33 PM

QUOTE(keelim @ Dec 8 2014, 12:03 PM) Initially I was comparing Macs and non-Macs laptop. I gave a "big" picture thought which then led me to get a Mac, reluctantly. Apple has successfully created an ecosystem for its hardware, which unfortunately, I am an unconscious victim. I have a few iPhones and iPads, the ever-confusing iCloud accounts, and potentially AppleTv. I hope the yet to be explored conveniences of staying in the ecosystem would facilitate the crappy iTunes streaming of my devices, seamlessly. I have since narrowed down to MBP and MBAir. Similarly, my applications are for web surfing, Microsoft office works (light), photo-editing, movies, torrents, pdfs, and lots of pdfs. Proprietary rights (software) are strongly enforced under Apple and I do foresee paying quite a premium for these. This applies to Microsoft office suite but the availability of "Parallel OS", standalone OS, and Microsoft365 will still allow Mac-user to work on office-based projects. The only issue is the price. Thoughts? I am using MBA for almost 3 years now. Suits me pretty well, I don't play games and my main priority on the move is really enough battery juice to do some simple work and browse. Most of my files are 'cloud' or on portable HDD anyway. I would suggest a bootcamp over Parallel unless you really need to swap between windows and OSX very often. Parallel will slow down your Mac since you virtually running windwos on top of OSX. Parallel also not cheap, where else bootcamp is free. My favourite is still the 'no longer in production' MBWhite, a tough beast, still running in torturous environment under my kid. The other kid is using a MBP For AppleTV, unless u gonna get a VPN, its pretty limited to AirTV between your Mac devices. With VPN, at least you can get Netflix and stuff. Setting up a WiFi 'VPN secured' network is a new challenge altogether. haha. This post has been edited by Mackiddo: Dec 8 2014, 02:50 PM

QUOTE(keelim @ Dec 9 2014, 10:35 AM) Thanks. Good rundown. Yup heard of Netflix and it's cumbersome to setup the VPN as well as maintaining it outside of US. Just wondering, does your MBA heat up easily? Do you need a cooling pad? Actually its not too difficult to setup a 'secured vpn' WiFi connection in your home. Just get a Asus wireless router with dd-wrt capabilities. Need to flash the firmware. Once setup, you are good to go. You'll probably get a 10mbps speed running through VPN with your fibre optic line, enough for streaming. I've nvr had cooling pad with my MBA. The heat pretty much dissipates thru the aluminium unibody. This post has been edited by Mackiddo: Dec 9 2014, 12:26 PM

QUOTE(kevin613 @ Dec 22 2014, 10:22 PM) hmm... if i remember correctly the expenses and also the medical report have to be borne by employer. also watch out if anyone applied PR successfully, DO NOT allow employer to deduct employer contribution from your salary. my ex company tried to do that, and i have to get them on conference call and get a direct answer from MOM that its against the employment law before they agree to pay their share. Employer not paying worker's CPF is a serious violation. By deducting the employer part of contribution thru the employees pay constituted as cheating. Any particular reason why they are doing it, increased overhead cost perhaps?

QUOTE(tik tok tik tok @ Dec 23 2014, 08:35 PM) Hi, I will be starting to work in January. Refer to my offer letter, there is a sentence stated that "During the continuance of your employment, you shall be paid a monthly salary of xxxx, subject to the deduction of such amount in respect of your contribution to the CPF (if applicable) or any amount that the company may be entitled to deduct by law." Is this meant that if I got PR, the employee and employer contribution to the CPF, both will deduct from my salary? Thank you. you are pretty well cover i would say. no issue.

QUOTE(whatsayyou @ Dec 25 2014, 12:37 AM) or u can check your corporate mobile plans? with my previous company, i pay S$7 to add 3G data and my monthly quota is 30GB. Cannot use finish one. At most i use 1gb a month only. haha. my ex company got bargaining power with singtel. thats why can get 30gb. i used to pay s$7 add-on under corporate but for 50gb. The downside its limited to 1mbps. So gave up on that plan and go for the normal singtel plan with 7.2mbps since home also got fibre broadband. QUOTE(JohnJon82 @ Dec 24 2014, 12:57 PM) Try mobile broadband if don't want the hassle. I survived on mobile broadband for years. mobile broadband speed is too slow to use at home, can hit probably 10mbps at best? its really really slow. Should be ok for browsing, too slow for clouding. But then again that kinda speed is consider god-like in Marehsia.

My friend who recently relocated to USA facing this problem. He cannot rent his flat because of the MOP and the worse part is he is not fulfilling the MOP as he is not considered occupying the flat for this period. Lester1987 already said no problem, sure no problem one. Got problem just pm him.

QUOTE(wickedghost @ Dec 29 2014, 03:41 PM) Anyone working with PPL shipyard? I just got offered for commissioning eng. Position. They offered me 3.4k with 8 dollars OT cap at sgd200. Others quite standard. Package is not great. I am still looking else where for better offers. I have 5 years exp in o&g. What do you think guys? how does the OT works? $8/hr OT? Since you are claiming to have O&G experience why not join major refineries like Shell, Chevron, ExxonMobil, SRC, Singas, JAC or something similar? Why settle for crappy package? Unless by saying you have 5 years exp in O&G is actually on vendor/supplier side, which amounts to almost, nothing.

QUOTE(deodorant @ Jan 9 2015, 01:40 PM) Anyone know if it's possible to online re-print Entry Permit for PR? I google and poke all around ICA website only can find re-entry permit eService, but not the first original Entry Permit reprint QUOTE(toughnut @ Jan 9 2015, 01:58 PM) Login and choose last option "Print REP". You get the same thing as the one given during you completed the PR formality (at least for mine) There's no entry permit, only re-entry permit right? there ain't any re-print feature. its important to save the copy as PDF and store it properly the 1st time. To get a copy, one have to go down to paya lebar ICA iirc. This post has been edited by Mackiddo: Jan 10 2015, 10:27 AM
