Just curious, in what age do you guys first enter/employed by Big4s? Let's said if a fresh graduate who intends to work in Big 4s, yet he has no working experience prior to this, at his age of around 23, 24. It is advisory for him to gain 1, 2 years of working experiences before he apply for the job of Big 4s (maybe around 25, 26 years old already) or straight away looks for Big 4s job without experience at all?
*
Jac,

If audit or tax, they are the best place to start as there are clear path on training, exams etc. By three years, u will be a fully qualified member of your professional body eg ACCA, ASCPA, MICPA etc. Can go on overseas, or to commercial later,

If advisory as in consulting, then maybe it is better to get some industry experience first. Say u wan risk management, maybe better to join a foreign bank first. Your clients wan to see some industry experience in your cv when u propose for job. Finacne and IT type based job easier to start at big4.

PPl always complain about too much work in big4- but hv u spoken 2 your frens in other jobs like investment bank. At least big4 u know what u are getting into. Speak to your senior who had joined the big4 long ago- i think most of them doing more than okay. Treat big4 like mnc lah. So many wan to get in also esp now maybe got recession- sure tougher to get in.

I think too much caffeine this morning. Goodluck.

PS for audit- don't go too late if not all the ppl call u uncle.

hi everyone... juz wondering izzit possible to get a job in big4 with a second lower class obu degree? i'm 21 this year n currently pursuing last 3 acca professional level papers... planning to get a job in big4 around june or july (before results release).... btw, i've failed before... are they hiring straight passes only...? thx in advance... smile.gif

baby J,
normally B4 will not shortlist 2:2 for interview but will consider if u pass the ACCA as one the problem, poor academics get stuck in pro exams. Most important to get to an interview ( use all your resources- ask mother, uncle, clients, frens etc who know some big shot in the B4 to get u an interview.) Afterwards it is all up to you as to how well u do in the inteview. Good luck. nod.gif

. . . life is so much simpler in school. sigh.

siaolang,
if u intend to spend the next 3 to 5 years to start your career with a company -I think it is important to spend a little researching on your future employer. U can find out so much by 1-visit their website and 2-speaking to your frens, counsellors. Use the opportunity of the interview to find out things which are important to you which may not be clear in their website eg training, prof exams, overseas secondments, career progression dan lain lain. Questions that indciate that u are interested to develop your career. thumbup.gif

This not the time to ask what the company does, which bus goes to the office or where can u park your BMW. tongue.gif

Don't worry too much - try again at the other firms. Good luck. nod.gif

if i answer yes will they still hire me or will not consider to hire me anymore?

Added on April 28, 2008, 10:57 pmi'm going to interview in Deloitte in this week...my biggest concern is the essay test..can any ppl juz interviewedin Deloitte plz share with me what question had been asked during the test?  PM also can...
*
Nothing wrong with saying you are being called for interview by other B4.

normally the essay will have simple topics like what's your best achievement todate? Who is most influential in your life/ or something like that? They want to test your writing skills expression, lamnguage profiency but also want to see elements of teamwork, leadership, integrity etc. So write something real life experience and end with what were the learning points that make the event, situation so meaningful to you. Think a little logically and frameup your essay for example start with the event, situation, background- next what happen and what you have to do and end with learning points, summary. Practice a bit at home okay.

Most of the firm have low expectations of english nowadays- based on your email and if u write in full sentences and no sms spellings you should breeze thor'. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

my fren fresh gred at EY got position AA2 @ RM2450, why no revised in this pay for fresh gred???
*
aiyoh. . pay all in the same range - + and minus RM50/100 before you think of bonus policy, benefits, overtime, study program and leave. Should look for the firm that gives u the best training and development, promotion prospect, overseas secondment, work enviroment etc. After that still undecided, look for where your frens are, location etc smile.gif

Don't know why ppl nowadays so scared of hard work- we should be scared of work if no potential to develop or learn. Thats why ppl try big firm first so they do not have to change job after 2 years. Some more some big firm give discount on your expereince cos the smaller firm all mainly small jobs and maybe no experience with MNCs and plcs. What is discount- maybe 2 years in small firm - job offered is equivalent to starting 2nd year (lose one year in process but still hgher pay). yawn.gif
Be brave try something that will challenge u to do you best lah. In school can do anything why suddenly so scared? So many go thru oredy. Try lah. Good luck to all. thumbup.gif

(,maybe u shd pm me so i can get frens in bigfirm to recommend u and get referral fee- dont know this referral fee is on or not. Ekonomi no good must find other ways to cari maken) cool2.gif

They must have three basket:

nod.gif A- Offer immediately (say 10%)
blink.gif B-Lets finish the rest of the interviews first and reconsider-KIV-60%?
rclxub.gif C-Reject immediately-30%?

So getting a quick reply can be good rclxms.gif or bad? cry.gif

actually he is right. for the big 4(s), your audit part is just one small part for one of the audit task, your learning progress would not be as comprehensive as the medium/small firm because in these firms they actually make you perform the whole audit rather than do part of it itself, workload is definately worse off than the big 4(s) but you do learn much more in the process.
*
This statement is too general. Very few ppl will opt for small firm if given the choice- it must be of certain size so that the experience is more comprehensive-for example, it has mnc, plcs and some in diff industries.

I think those who have worked for a Big 4 firm will tell you that the big firm is not organised as one single audit unit- too big but are in smaller depts of 60 to 120 staff- each dept is standalone like a medium size firm but with better clients and practices. Big firms are like MNCs and so there is little comparison in terms of size, resources etc. wtih the other firms. And the "brand" itself is worth striving for if you have high aspirations. biggrin.gif Speak to those who hv worked there. biggrin.gif

anybody working in big4 in Tax division?
hows the job prospect n career growth?
is it possible n advisable to do ACCA n work in TAX division?
can we apply for MIA membership if we are in TAX for 3yrs?
is the pay similar to audit?
thanks smile.gif
*
Not many want to specialise early in tax but its your choice if u are sure.
A little less mobile as not all companies requier tax prof as they can use the tax agents but prospects should be good.
Most firms require tax prof to do MIT exams. If u intent to specialise in tax, this is important.
Pay is the same or sometimes slightly higher? biggrin.gif
Speak to your frens already in tax. smile.gif

Most want to start in audit becos u get to go to client's place and less desk bound than tax prof plus u hv more choice of profession later- you still can specialise in tax after u finish the ACCA. Tax jobs r smaller and most are done in the office- client sent everything to do u and u prepare tax return. mad.gif Tax advisory type work only happens later which is much more interesting!! icon_idea.gif

QUOTE(verticalforce @ Feb 14 2009, 05:57 AM)
Guys, I'm wondering here whether ICAS is as respected as ICAEW in Malaysia?

The reason being is that I've been offered a summer internship position at EY London in Audit.  The way their system works is that I will have a partner interview at the end of my internship where they'll decide if they are going to give me a graduate offer or not.

Ernst & Young in the UK does the ICAS qualification instead of ICAEW or ACCA.  I've been told that ICAS is equivalent to ICAEW?  I've also checked the MIA website and it seems that they recognised ICAS as well.

Will ICAS put me in a disadvantage position in Malaysia and do people only know about ICAEW and ACCA?  I suspect not a lot of people do ICAS in Malaysia as you need a degree to start studying for it.

Thanks for any advice.  If i get a grad job I'll probably stay in the UK for a couple of years and then come back to Malaysia so i don't want to study ICAS if it's not recognised....

I also have final round interview coming up with Deloitte London but I don't think I can make it as my EY offer expires in 2 weeks time and the interview is in 2 1/2 weeks time.

PS. I'm a UK student
*
vertical,
U must be a first class student and are lucky to obtain a internship with a big4 in UK esp now that there is a downturn and preference are given to candidates from EU countries. It is next to impossible to get any placement nor internship in UK now. I even heard that some were paid off not to start work even though they hv confirmed their jobs last summer.

Since u are in UK u shd know more about ICAS and if not go visit their office and find out more. ICAS is not run outside of UK and even ICAEW exams were only carried outsideof UK in recent years probably to increase their membership. All I can say is that ICAS is highly reputable anywhere in the world including Malaysia.

Use the internship to find out more about a career in a public accounting firm and in particular this firm. They will use the internship to assess u so go and impress them!! biggrin.gif
