learning japanese without kanji is like learning english with only half the alphabets.

without kanji u cant read:

-Signs
-Directions
-Instructions
-Menus
-Mail
-Advertisements
-Labels
-Notices
-Warnings
-Official correspondence
-Their bills
n etc

ppl will u think u either illiterate or mentally challenged. in japanese they will call u a "baka"

Regardless of which Chinese dialect/language you're speaking, the character is still the same.
Personal question, can you read Chinese characters?
