I have a hunch that this event actually intended to promote the real event in SG.

yup, i also felt that cosplaying has annoyingly became the main attraction to most anime events here...

Is is because we have no demand for anime movie marathon or we can't attract seiyuus or japanese anime industry players to grace our local anime scene?

I find that whenever someone uses the term "Otaku Culture", I have the urge to laugh really loud.

Indeed. There is a general misconception of what really IS Otaku Culture. I mean really, in Japan that would mean you are in your house, being a hikkikomori, growing fat, watching anime, leeching of your parents, stalking seiyuu, fighting about it on 2ch and repeat ad nauseum. It perplexes me how Japan manages to market this so called "culture" as a good thing to the outside world and yet still regards the otakus in Japan as scumbags. I can't tell you how many anime directors actually called these otaku gross, and more so the various seiyuus that was stalked daily by their fans.

So Malaysian, do YOU have what it takes to be a REAL otaku?

Japan did not market the Otaku Culture.

It's the foreigners that created this "culture" through rose-tinted glasses.

And I swear, every time I hear anyone proudly proclaim that they are otaku, be it Malay, Chinese, or Caucasian, I just want to laugh in their faces.

In a sense, Japan does promote the otaku culture, but yeah it is started by the gaijins* that sees this as unique and wanted to be something that they are not. Japan, being the awesome opportunist they are, took this with open hands, sensing that they could make money from all this. There are now specific promotion by the Japanese government towards anime fans (read: I don't like to use the term Otaku describing them) to visit Japan and see for themselves famous landmarks that are well known in the anime world.

In the end they just want your money. Nothing more, nothing less.

*T/L Note: Gaijin means foreigner
