Umm Hi....I am interested in getting an Alligator Snapping Turtle (preferably hatchling), anyone can point me to the right direction? I am staying in PJ and I have been to a couple of reputed pet stores (88 pet store, Irene Aquarium, and a few others) and all I have found are common snappers.
Would any of the members here recommend a place to purchase one and around how much damage am I going to be looking at? Thanks in advance for all and any feedback!! Cheers! |

QUOTE(uzairi @ Nov 16 2006, 01:06 AM) Firstly, caring an Ally Snapper is not as easy as it looks. I would recommend you to get other turtles first and then slowly increase the turtle level. That way is much better. Hi uzairi,For now, there's no stock for juvenile ally. There's only adult ally which were selling at around rm1k each. Would you mind sharing with me the difficulties of owning an Ally Snapper? I had a common snapper for around 2 years until I left to further my studies and it was given away to someone, are they very different in terms of caring for? Frankly, I have no interest in any other turtles, but I am willing to hear out why it is a difficult breed to care for. I definitely do not wish to turn out as a irresponsible pet owner and thus I would like to gather a little more feedback before I commit myself. I apologize in advance for asking so many questions, but I do thank you all for the replies thus far and I am looking forward to getting more feedback from you all here. Cheers! |

QUOTE(uzairi @ Nov 16 2006, 11:57 AM) Since you have a common snapper last time, then i don't think its hard for you. They are roughly the same just that they differ in the way they eat and how active they are. Ally snappers are more aggressive compared to common snapper. And they don't chase their food like how common snapper did. They need a good filtration system to prevent algae build up on their carapace. Try to avoid handling them as they can be quite aggressive and might snap you finger off easily. Other than that i don't think there's anything left. Hi again uzairi! Thanks again for your feedback and I really appreciate you taking the time to answer me. Glad to know that caring for them is similiar to the common snapper, I loved my snapper...unfortunately I had to let it go. Anyway I am back for good now and finally setlling down, meaning I can dedicate more time to my pets. Now that I know I can take care of an Ally Snapper.....all I need to do is to find a place or someone to sell me a hatchling |

QUOTE(kamekame8888 @ Nov 16 2006, 06:05 PM) hi BillyJoe, i believe it is not easy to find hatcling Allys now...got a forummer here who had been looking for it since pretty long but still no news. Any picts of your prev Common snapper? How big was it when you give away? Hi kamekame,Kamekame. Yeah...tell me about it...I have covered almost all the bigger pet shops around Klang Valley now, still no luck. My snapper was around 6-7 inches in shell length when I gave him away, only had him for two years. As for pics, sorry to say I don't have any as it was quite a while ago and back then I didn't have a digital camera. QUOTE(uzairi @ Nov 16 2006, 07:17 PM) Mine sometimes i feed them shrimps and crickets too. Hi again uzairi! Heheh yeah...been reading up care sheets and skulking in other forums to learn more about Ally Snappers. I am quite aware as to how big they can get and I am not too worried about space as I am ready for it. I don't mind spending a little on food too, so long as my pet is happy! Another thing i missed, they grow quite big and you need a big tank ready for them. Furthermore they can grow quite fast in the earlier years of their lives and they ate quite a lot so be ready to fork some money for their foods. |

QUOTE(EuJax @ Nov 19 2006, 02:43 AM) BillyJoe, Hi EuJax,I think every Alligator Snapping turtle has their own individual character. Some may be tame while some very aggressive. Always be cautious while handling them and the best is to leave them alone. Dont disturb them unnecessarily. Afterall they are wild animals, dont take the chance. My 2c. Anyway, i havent spotted any hatchling Alligator Snappers since a while. You might have to wait a little longer BillyJoe. They are interesting turtle and with a price tag of RM200 it is a lot of turtle for the money. Good luck in your hunt. 2 pictures of mine... Regards Very nice turtle you have there....love the tank setup too! I don't actually plan to handle the ally much, but thanks for the advice As for getting an ally for now, I have resigned to my fate and I shall wait patiently until they arrive, be it next year...or the next next year *sigh* Until then, I really appreciate all the help from everyone and I do hope to be a proud owner of an ally snapper soon. Do let me know if anyone sees an ally snapper hatchling yea? Till the next time..... Cheers! |
