I have been using D7000 for the past 2 years and with 50mm 1.8D. It is definitely sufficient to start with. As you progress you will learn and hone your shots. The lens makes a big difference after you have learned how to compose your shots properly.

My Nikon 50mm 1.8D really gave me the chance to learn all that. Once you used it more often, you will know wether you want to upgrade or try a 35mm. =)
