This thread is not a WTA [want to ask].

Recently, a high graphic demanding game was released. A game that many First Person Shooter (FRP) gamers have been longed for.
The name of the said game is Call of Duty: Advance Warfare. Lucky for me, the graphic optimisation of the game is great. I could run it on my outdated lenovo y400 laptop(Well, the Nvidia 900m series are out and they are out of my price range sweat.gif ).

The minimum requirements for COD: Advance Warfare:
INTEL CPU: Core i3-530 2.9GHz
AMD CPU: Phenom II X4 810
Nvidia GPU: GeForce GTS 450
AMD GPU: Radeon HD 5870 1024MB
RAM: 6 GB
OS: Win 7 64 bits
Directx: DX11
HDD Space: 55 GB

My Lenovo y400 specs:
INTEL CPU: i7 (3rd Gen) 3630QM / 2.4 GHz
Nvidia GPU: GeForce GT750m 2G DDR5
RAM: 8 GB
OS: Win 8.1 64 bits
Directx: DX11
HDD: SSD(KINGSTON SV300S37A120G)

However, the temperature were rather extreme. As high as 104'C(well, one of it's core) CPU & 98'C GPU without cooling pad and A.C room. Certainly, not enough to cause a sudden blue screen of death(BSOD) or sudden death of GPU nor CPU but high enough to reduce the computer lifespan. At first, I tried to reduce the temperature by using a simple modded cooling pad.

Still, it was not effective. So, I began to mod the cooling system of the Notebook.

After a observation under the laptop, I found the airflow is somehow restricted by a fabric that covered the grill part at the bottom of the computer.
I concluded that a decent amount of airflow was blocked and removing the fabric would do wonders for cooling the whole system.

Attached Image

Before my hand touches the fabric, I have a thought. why bother? Just let the grill out. Easier and less work. and I did.

Now, this is my temperature after an hour or so running COD: Advance warfare. With a cooling pad[unmodded] and in a non A.C room.

in case, if anyone wonders about the thermal paste and dust in the fan.

the thermal paste is still stock and unchanged since bought.

the fan was not disassembled. Simply cleaned with a damp q-tip(cotton button).

You might have to do more cleaning as you removed the anti dust filter (I assume).. smile.gif

That's why I didn't rip the fabric off. so, I could put back the grills after 'm done gaming.

Sorry to say this, despite the mod done. The Max temp of GPU and CPU does not look good to me. sweat.gif

To me it's acceptable compared with before mod.
Didn't change the thermal paste since warranty is still in play.

oh well, we make do with what we got.

It took me 2 years++ to get my G53SX hitting that temp for GPU. CPU never exceed as high as that AFAIK, there should be a thermal protection limit for CPU when it exceeds 100'c.

Guess lenovo cut corners with the cooling system. mine is 1 year +5 months Old. and I love to push my laptop to it's limit. tongue.gif
open hardware monitor registered 104'C Max temp for one of the CPU core. AFAIK, my CPU thermal protection limit is 110'C. hmm.gif
I wonder if upgrade to Sli will reduce the temp...

p/s: still deciding whether to upgrade to SLi gt750m or just buy a whole new system as soon as warranty end.

edit: just check my Maximum Operating Temperature for CPU is 105 °C. Damn sweat.gif , almost killed my CPU. tongue.gif

I only got 8.36 Gb of free space in my SSD now.
tongue.gif sweat.gif
I used SSD for it's faster loading and slight faster frame drop recovery.

Maybe he meant he shouldnt buy a 80GB SSD. He should get larger capacity SSD.
