Just to add more explanation.

elea88, I assume you need HKD for HKEX. IB does not have the pair SGD.HKD. So you need to convert twice, SGD -> USD -> HKD. You can follow the suggestion by rjb123 for SGD -> USD (meaning to BUY the pair USD.SGD).
Then you need to SELL the pair USD.HKD to get your HKD.

Some basic concept about forex trading. For a currency pair, i.e USD.SGD, the first currency (USD) is the base currency, the second currency (SGD) is the quote currency.
Assumed 1 USD = 1.3514 SGD.
When you :

1) buy 10,000 USD.SGD, you will get 10,000 USD. For this BUY, 13,514 SGD will be deducted from your IB account. The commission charged is 2 USD. Buying a currency pair will give you the base/first currency.

2) sell 10,000 USD.SGD, you will get 13,514 SGD. For this SELL, 10,000 USD will be deducted from your IB account. The commission charged is 2 USD. Selling a currency pair will give you the quote/second currency.

IB has a youtube channel with tutorials, i.e. Forex with WebTrader

Hope this helps.

FYI - HKEX doesn’t only list HKD denominated ETFs - USD also. Same goes for LSE , they sometimes have 3 variants (EUR, USD, GBP)

You're right. I was only thinking in general term, most of the listed companies are denominated in HKD. But HK is truly an international hub, even the local bank transfer can be made in USD or EUR, besides the default HKD.
*
Indeed it is - single account number with HSBC can receive pretty much any international currency and it just creates a balance in that currency.

A dream compared to most other countries where the bank will just convert it into base.

Shame that it’s become so much more difficult to open accounts with banks there now compared to before!

Anyone here can confirm this?

Not tried this yet - I usually withdraw to overseas account and not to MYR

Withdrawals are fast though - I get them through mostly within an hour or less.

com/en/account/conditions/

can any sifu check via captrader? i tried to seach via IB demo acc.But cant seems to find tradegate listed etf.
*
The ETF is by Ishares and has different ticker depending on what exchange you want to buy it on

https://www.ishares.com/uk/individual/en/pr...ts-etf-acc-fund

Eg. SRX8 on Deutsche Boerse XETRA, CSPX or CSP1 on LSE etc.

All those exchanges are available through IB

Is it possible if after I funded IB, I withdraw 100% of it? Say few days later and leave zero inside?
*
Funds are available to withdraw 3 days after depositing.

No problem to empty the account, assuming no margin is in use.

Nice  rclxms.gif  rclxms.gif
Cause got nothing to buy so not going to buy for the sake of buying.
You dump USD100k with IB/trasnfer USD100k worth of shares to IB? Cause if don't do that got monthly fee of USD10. hmm.gif  hmm.gif
*
But trading fees offset the $10 USD inactivity fees .. if you DCA into a few ETFs every month, you're likely to spend close to $10 on trading fees anyway. Considering most other brokers have higher fees, I don't think this $10 is a big deal

You can start with a white label, use it as a stepping stone until you reach 100k. There's a learning curve when switching to IB as it's platform is geared towards professional traders. It takes some time to really master it.
*
Yeah - I use IB a lot for currency exchange .. quite a few times I've used IDEALPRO vs FXCONV only to have to reverse the transaction again

They have the trading on their site (not using TWS) also if I remember , which is a bit simpler.

Make the same mistake myself. Once I also shorted an option by accident and have to buy it back.
The FXCOV option was created after some customers complained that IDEALPRO option will create a virtual position by default. I was one of those who complained smile.gif
This virtual position can be set to 0 in TWS and thus making it disappear.
*
But if you set it to 0 (ie. close positions) doesn't that do the same thing of just closing the virtual currency position?

Another great thing with IB is the margin rates on negative currency balances .. GBP/EUR is only like 1.6% PA

But deposit rate for EUR is negative .. due to the ECB deposit rate being negative also.

Yes, the virtual position is closed but your account is not affected in anyway. Your currency exchange will not be reversed.

Unfortunately the white labels have slightly higher margin rate. The difference in margin rate between IB and the white label's is profit for the white label.

IB is nice that negative rate only applies when you have more 100K of a currency with negative rate, i.e. > 100K CHF/EUR.
I also exchange currency when the rate is in my favor.
*
The rates for balances under 100k are actually higher than above 100k, not sure where you're seeing it free under 100k?

Wait so even if you are withdrawing SGD to SG bank account, they don't EPS or FAST transfer?
*
They should do as they have a local account - I'll have to double check as don't have SGD account added there

For example to UK GBP BACS withdrawal is available too

then left right all my kawan's.. questioning me.. SAFE OR not? u go put $ inside this ONLINE THING?

erm... i also dunno.
*
I consider IB to be safe - no issue holding a lot there. Use it for company overseas also, sometimes withdrawing / depositing $500k in a week

Can't say I've used the web app for watchlists before

But depending on what you want live prices for, IB charges you for data subscriptions (delayed prices are free)

QUOTE(moosset @ Apr 7 2019, 02:49 PM)
so as long as you got holding power and can hold for long term, definitely no problem??

since S&P500 are the top companies, they will surely recover (or be replaced) in bull market, no?

if like that, then everyone (including PNB) can just invest in S&P500 and problem solved?
*
Past performance isn’t a guarantee for future performance.

But in the long term, as long as you hold long enough it’s a fairly safe bet.

can key in both? TAKE PROFIT part and Stop loss part together ?
*
Why not use STOP LIMIT? Is it a volatile one?

user posted image

You can use combination as example screenshot (not a real trade obviously .. just an example)

Is it a must to transact with  min USD25k via Ideal pro ?Can I use transect using SGD 8k?
*
Doesn’t have to be USD 25K, can do smaller amounts also but it’ll be placed as an “odd lot”. Might end up paying a very slightly different rate (but negligible difference) as small lots are more difficult to match bid/ask to other orders.

I tested withdrawal from IB recently. For all the options below, no fee was charged by the receiving bank but the transfer itself can be very slow, except EUR/SEPA.

1) SGD to SG bank account via GIRO/ACH.
The fund was credited to my account 3 days later (T + 3).

2) HKD to HK bank account via GIRO/ACH.
The fund was credited to my account 3 days later (T + 3).

3) GBP to TransferWise GBP account via BACS.
The fund was credited to my account 2 days later (T + 2).

4) EUR to TransferWise EUR account via SEPA.
The fund was credited to my account on the same day the withdrawal was submitted (T + 0).
*
In UK you can use WIRE rather than BACS - this usually arrives within an hour.

Same with EUR too, can arrive within an hour too

Ah sorry - I was referring to a normal EUR account, not transferwise borderless.

Who do you bank with in HK? I used to use HSBC before but they closed everything down a couple of years ago and seem to have become increasingly difficult to open anything new.

I was referring to accounts I had with HSBC in HK, both personal and company.

There’s quite a few they did this to in around 2016/2017.

Did they close both your personal and company accounts? Or closed just the company account let you keep the personal account?

Both! And after the hassle involved I'd prefer to use a different bank. I heard good things about DBS in HK so might give that a try when I'm next there.
