I think Malaysian market is bigger than Taiwanese one for TVB. Most of the dramas are broadcasted by TVBS (another TVB-controlled company) in Taiwan, so technically, TVB manages its own business there, unlike in Malaysia.

HK drama transcends different groups of Chinese in Malaysia.

Whether you are Cantonese, Hokkien, Hakka.......most of them do watch HK films/dramas.

A number of those who are not Cantonese, but able to speak Cantonese, primarily because of TVB dramas.

tvb is not going to get a share of advertising here on astro. they are merely selling the rights to broadcast and astro already pays upfront. Since there is no more monetary incentive why would they care what else astro is broadcasting. It is not like Astro will cancel deal with TVB just because there is another deal with HKTV. I suppose TVB will not care what happened as long as its not competing with their ad revenue in Hong Kong.

Millions of Malaysians will be the first to tune in to dramas produced by HKTV, as a major television station in the Southeast Asian country will air shows a day ahead of the online station's launch in the city.

Malaysian station Astro has signed a deal with HKTV to broadcast and distribute Cantonese-language dramas produced by the station from November 18 on the Astro Shuang Xing channel, it was announced yesterday.

Astro, which has pay-television, radio, publications and digital media interests, is broadcast to 4.2 million households, 60 per cent of Malaysian homes.

HKTV dramas will also be available across Southeast Asia, New Zealand and Australia as Astro also owns the rights for these regions.

Choo Chi Han, vice-president of Astro's Chinese customer business, said the introduction of the HKTV dramas would enrich the content of Astro, which operates 172 television channels.

He said the shows would also be offered in its on-demand television service and on other devices under its on-the-go service.

According to Malaysian government statistics, Malaysia had a total population of 28.6 million in 2010, of whom 22 per cent were ethnically Chinese.

Chinese-language content, primarily Hong Kong entertainment shows, play a key role, Choo said in previous interviews.

Hong Kong free-to-air giant TVB, which celebrates its 47th anniversary on November 19 - the same day that HKTV launches its interactive entertainment and shopping platform in the city - has a strong presence in Malaysia. Astro carries TVB's Classic, Entertainment News, Xing He and TVBS Asia channels.

HKTV declined to reveal the value of the deal but said it has 22 drama titles ready. HKTV spends an average of HK$1 million to produce each drama episode.

The 22 titles include crime thriller Borderline, which had one episode debut on YouTube, and The Election, a political drama about murky goings-on in a chief executive election race starring award-winning actors Angelica Lee Sin-jie and Liu Kai-chi.

Singaporean teacher Elaine Lai, 24, said TVB might still have an advantage in Southeast Asia. "Most of us prefer Hong Kong shows to local shows," she said. "Despite [TVB's] recent stagnation, they have risen well by making an impactful comeback."

She said HKTV "looks good" but the familiar faces in TVB dramas were an advantage. She said HKTV's ability to draw audiences would depend on the quality of the productions.

HKTV intended to launch a free-to-air service when boss Ricky Wong Wai-kay applied for a licence. But his bid was rejected by the Executive Council last year, sparking protests outside government headquarters.

Wong then acquired a mobile television licence, but saw his plans rejected on technical grounds. HKTV is now making its programmes available to stream through computers, mobile apps or set-top boxes, which does not require a government licence.

HKTV also plans to launch HKTV Mall, a shopping and entertainment platform.

HKTV has chosen "The Election" starring Malaysian actress Lee Sinje as their first drama, but Astro chose "Borderline" instead.

"The Menu" is definitely better la

news media/journalism + politics = guarantee recipe of success for a film

I think some films from US had such theme...

I dropped "Young Charioteers" and "Eye in the Sky" liao

My very honest opinion on this TVB - HKTV matter and of course the dodgy politics of licensing. ATV can "pak wu ying" for all I care and those HKers even had running jokes for ATV lel. CableTV is cool, only because of its travelogue... Priscilla Wong brows.gif And as for the other TV stations that I can't remember of or only watched them on the net..... who cares?!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fouTHwe8A88 brows.gif (Chinese in Cuba included)
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPNn...HwCWp9Zuj67WUC0

I've been watching TVB before I was even on this universe... in my ma's tummy. When I was a kid, I used to watch TVB's series at 7pm on TV2, having dinner and watching tv might not be the best way to enjoy your meal but hey it was fun. Not sure what year that I stop (on and off, just put it that way) watching TVB, it was kinda length period, probably from 2005 - 2010 or so. I only start to "watch it" again few years ago, but that also on and off too, and still do. I guess once you grow up, you start to develop this thing called "taste", I only watch interesting shows only: period/historical dramas particularly, sci-fi, detective, yada2

As much as I love TVB and its darlings: Jinny Ng or Sisley Choi (the recent batch) or Lin Xiawei (damn she don't have a Canto name wtf whatever)
I must say: It's high time to end TVB's monopolization!! TVB needs some good bitch slaps, just to get the quality improved. TVB is too pussy to make shows like "The Menu" and "The Election". UK and US all already made those shows! We should embrace the world, have more peaceful dialogues!! And most importantly, PROGRESSIVE!

Btw, anyone has the HKTV series list, like really long list of it?

the HK showbiz (model, tv, cinema, short film, etc.) has very high competition in that little city state country aka culture hub

I realised that recently after further researching. Even some M'sians are working in that industry: Fish Liew 廖子妤, Vivien Yeo, Gin Lee 李幸倪. Took them a while to learn a new language so to speak of. What does it mean? It means HK is a place that demands foreign talents (by talents I do not mean bangla. You get the drift).

On topic:
This series is so damn good. I feel like a better person every time I watch this!
As a reporter you need to report the truth and let the public be the judge, instead of portraying this thing is good or not or choosing side.

Robert Capa - war journalism - lost suitcase - "If your photographs aren't good enough, you're not close enough." fuuuuuuuu mind cucuk notworthy.gif

Olympic 1968 - 2 blacks - Black human rights salute

And so far, ep 9, the scripts are well written. notworthy.gif
This series is top notch!
