It does sound and look a lot like the Final Destination series. Just a weird thought that the device that's meant to save lives are now killing lives by launching pieces of metal shrapnel onto the occupants when the airbags are deployed. It's better that the airbags fail to deploy in the event of an accident in this case, though I understand that in most accidents airbags usually don't deploy either due to defective airbags or the angle of collision that does not trigger the airbag activation.
