Yikes. Sounds like Final Destination if the Takata air bags are deployed. Metal shrapnel and pieces of loose metal bars come flying to you in all directions. Might as well they don't deploy.
The killer metal shrapnel are not outside material but from inside the vehicle. Parts of the airbag or the car that pierce through the airbags when the airbags are deployed. It is scary to imagine that the airbags which are supposed to be a saving device is going to kill you by launching shrapnel onto your face and neck. Might as well take the airbags out if that's the case.
I wonder if the car models over here in Malaysia are affected as in the USA. Apparently very quiet here. Though when accidents happen the authorities here won't probably go into detail like CSI and just regard mishaps as sudden death due to negligence, and that the airbags failed to protect the occupant in extreme situations even though they are deployed.

HONDA MALAYSIA CALLS FOR PRODUCT UPDATE FOR 15,734 UNITS OF CITY (2003-2004YM) AND JAZZ (2004YM)
Honda Malaysia undertook a product update exercise for 15,612 units of the City manufactured in 2003-2004 and 122 units of Jazz manufactured in 2004. This exercise is necessary to check and change the inflators in the driver side airbag if necessary. Honda deeply regrets the inconveniences caused by this product update and apologize to the affected customers.
The current selling model of the 4th Generation City (2014YM) and 3rd Generation Jazz (2014YM) do not require any product update.
Honda Malaysia also conveyed our heartfelt sympathy to the family of the woman who was deceased during an unfortunate accident in a city in Malaysia. The *vehicle experienced abnormal driver side airbag deployment during the crash.
This product update is necessary to change the inflator in the driver side airbag which was supplied by Takata. Honda’s recent investigation revealed irregularity of humidity control during the production process by the airbag supplier which could result in inflator rupture during airbag deployment.
Notification letters with details for the product update are being sent to customers who are affected. Customers who receive the notification letters are advised to send their vehicles to an authorized Honda dealer for inspection.
Should it be necessary, the required replacement will be carried out when the parts are ready and the cost of updating the parts will be borne by Honda Malaysia.
For more information related to this product update, please call Honda’s Toll Free number at 1-800-88-2020, or visit any authorized Honda dealer.
*vehicle: Model (Honda City 2003YM); Registration (Brunei); Production (Thailand)
I thought some Civic and Accord models are also affected, and Honda Malaysia just issued recall on the City and Jazz.
