Answer for Question 1 :
It happens to me sometimes, just restart and re-download, it will back to normal then. You may use "cocktail" http://www.maintain.se/cocktail/ to repair disk permissions if it happen again. You may change your default download location by : a) Go to safari "Preference" b) under "general icon" you may select the "save downloaded files to" dropdown function to anywhere you want.
