it's both. i try not to dictate the poses that much because a model normally should no what kind of pose she looks good in. unless she is completely clueless and then i try to give her examples. these discussions can be done before the shoot too, by exchanging photos of the ideas and poses.

for first shoot, i usually ask her to try a variety of poses, to see what works. in subsequent shoots, i usually have a better idea what poses she looks better in.

Another question. What would you do, if you come to a point when you realised that it (the theme and/or the model) is not working out for you.

As in, you realised that whatever you have in plan does not seem to come out right?

Well, you have to make the best of the resources you have available. It is unethical to tell the model to get lost in the middle of the shoot because you already made a commitment to hire her for that duration. i have however, ended some shoots early when I felt that things are not getting better.

if the poses are not good, try to suggest or give her ideas. i normally have extra outfits, so if it looks weird on her, i will ask her to try another. sometimes I talk to her more, make jokes, be friendly so her expression will be more relaxed. it is hard to get good shots if the model is under pressure. most of the time it works out fine.

i have shot quite a lot so i can break the ice and get the model to loosen up quite easily. usually the key point is the expression of the model and the pose.

if things don't go well, learn from the mistakes on what went wrong and move on

My shoots are always private. I don't do group shoots, but there are other guys that do group shoots

You can checkout Cruiser for example. He often organizes group shoots that people can join to get some experience to start building a port

Sometimes location is important, do u usually use the same location or always move around?

Observers are generally not allowed I assume (unless its a paying slot). Otherwise the venue will be filled with people just being observers

I don't do group shoots, only private ones. The cost is higher but I think there's more interaction and more productive. Group shoots are generally cheaper and gives a good start to those who are learning

I think there are a couple of fb groups around organizing shoots.

Since I always shoot in hotels, I will always move around to different hotels so my shoots will have a different background, and I try to find hotels which is either spacious or have a nice concept

is it ethical that we share the model contacts even if we dont know whether they wan more jobs?

No, it's not ethical to do so unless model allows it. Most of the time they only get spam, perverts, guys asking them for date, sex etc and hardly real jobs.

Unless you know a genuine photographer who is either good or willing to pay for shooting the model, always ask the model first if she is ok with it.
