Scarlett Johansson Offered Ghost in the Shell!

Although The Wolf of Wall Street's Margot Robbie was said to be up for the role earlier this year, Deadline is now reporting that Lucy and Marvel's The Avengers's Scarlett Johansson has been offered the leading role in DreamWorks' live-action adaptation of the popular manga Ghost in the Shell. Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders will helm the feature from a script by William Wheeler, based on the series by Masamune Shirow.

Produced by Avi Arad, Ari Arad and Steven Paul and with the backing of Steven Spielberg, the rights to Shirow's original 1989 complex futuristic thriller, about the members of a covert ops unit that takes on technology-related crime, were picked up several years ago with plans to use the latest 3D technology to film it. In Japan, the huge success of the comics led to a number of anime film adaptations, a TV series and a series of video games with DreamWorks releasing the second anime film in North America.

holy shi-t. i never expected this to happen biggrin.gif

that would be so amazing.

scarlet johansen definitely comes to mind with looks and skills, but at the same time i'm feeling maybe she should have more asian features. Not to sound racist, but for the first movie at least make it more authentic. Then maybe a future sequel in motoko's new body you can go for a westerner. Kinda like what they did for the nick fury character by mixing it up from a white to a black guy.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

or at the very least Milla Jovovich if they want a western main cast. she's had a similar role in the movies violet and resident evil

but that begs the question, maybe it's too much of a recurring theme that she always gets the main role for these major films, that it's awfully reminiscent of those days when Nicholas cage spammed every movie he could get his paws on because he had trouble with the IRS to pay off his bills  laugh.gif

A big part of gits is that it's a japanese special unit for public safety (something like homeland security but more black ops oriented). So are they going to relocate this to the US instead ? But in gits the US was considered a separate faction outside the gits team. Would be interesting to see what they do here  hmm.gif
anyway....The fact that the same director as for Snow White and the Huntsman is supposed to work on this makes me more uncomfortable than knowing Scarlet is supposed to be Motoko...  shocking.gif
http://deadline.com/2014/01/rupert-sanders...amworks-671069/
but the last anime they tried to do something similar, like dragon ball, i was permanently traumatized by the westernized version of it  shakehead.gif  so i'm very skeptical how this will turn out.

At the very least it's got to have the matrix level of quality of wow factor if they are going to win any fans with this  hmm.gif

*
- doesn't look like ayumi hamasaki at all. pls la find more suitable japanese actress shakehead.gif
- yi? i thought Rupert Sanders proven himself with the HALO trailer?

Look a bit eh!!! Think I caught a glimpse of Tricky in the clips, do wonder will he contribute to the soundtrack...his music style does fit the gritty electronica styling a little.
That cover of "Enjoy the silence" also a bit meh!!

from the trailer, it looks like the movie got plenty of material to play with:
-the brain switched diplomat?
- sex doll?

but they changed the story? looks like matoko backstory got changed...?

either way, scarlett doesnt fit much with matoko's persona, her face and her voice sleep.gif I wish its Angelina jolie but her face too square tongue.gif

Oh, if this movie doesn't have a mecha fight, I'm gonna be dissapointed.

Not feeling the music, but I hope it's just for the trailer because this opening recorded by IGN sure does looks awesome;

one thing I worried about is our local censorship

are they okay with "nude" android? even tho no tits are shown? tongue.gif

anyway, pretty sure some going to compare this to HBO's Westworld, even tho diff story, but the androids are pretty similar.

Rupert Sanders is a director who only has eyes for visuals. But unlike Zack Snyder, he's shit at action and even worst at capturing actor's performances.

I think the unique visual aspect will get this movie scored better than Snow White & The Huntsman.

Anyway, whoever caught it tonight or tomorrow, please share if there's any censored scenes

I was told the initial 12min sneak preview few weeks ago to be held by TGV had to be cancelled due to the scenes of The Major transformation involves full frontal "nude" scenes, although there's no tits nor hairs to be seen, but it blurs between the line of full nude hmm.gif

if that scenes are butchered, I'll skip watching it in cinema then

After the opening 5 minutes....the whole movie went downhill. They couldn't pull of the more philosophical nature of the original. Majority of the casts acted like dead fish with no emotion and a little too hard to connect with. Tonally they are going after the more slow burning artsy Mamoru Oshii style but for commercial viability IMO they ought to do the SAC version instead. The action sequences also nothing to write home about.

It's an inferior interpretation of the iconic anime. Skip it or wait until Uncle Jack sailing the sea with it.

What a cool looking movie but that's about it. Story, plot, characters doesn't interest me it at all. I literally fall asleep in the middle, really bores me but also previously watching another movie, Life which is more engaging than this and probably got tired. It has some cool sequence that almost bit by bit copy from both gits anime movies. I don't like every major characters of live version one, quite different from the original especially Batou. Can skip this one if you're not interested its cool visuals.

There's no censored on the whole transformation I think. There's not much to look at IMO. Just some synthetic layer in the shape of breast and butt. Much like mystique from xmen.

GITS is one of my all time favourite movie. When it was previously announced that Scarlet is going to be taking up the role, I too am skeptical about it. Both sides give a sorts of reasons but personally I still think they should have went with a more asian looking woman. Anyway, I do like Scarlet as she is a good actress.

As for the movie, after knowing that they almost copy the anime scene by scene, it really turn me off. That means at most it is just on par with the anime. No surprises and so on. Even the iconic Batou character is underwhelming. So I wasn't expecting much from the movie and sure enough after reason the comment here, it shows that I am right. Really dissapointing in some way but I do like that they did not attempt to re-invent the whole movie like a lot of the games/anime to live movie adaptation.

Ghost in the Shell (2017)

This... is maddening.

This is very difficult to write.

Difficult because it got so many things right and at the same time so many things wrong....

What they got right

The production of this movie is OFF THE CHARTS (with a budget of 110 Million dollars)

There are two previous movie that gave me this "wow" factor, namely

1) Star Wars (1976) (Now known as New Hope) (George Lucas coined the term Used Technology)
2) Blade Runner (1982) (when it first released)

Now this movie used the concept of Used Technology to the next level! Bravo!!

The surprising representation of the character Aramaki (by Takeshi Kitano a veteran Japanese actor) wowed me. Kuddos!!!

What they did not

I will be crucified for stating this, Scarlett Johansson. I am very sure alot of you went to this to see her. I just thought she was so... awkward here. I don't think she was quite sure what she was doing and it shows.

I never read the original comics. My introduction to this material was thru the animation Ghost in the Shell (1995). So many of the action sequences in the animation ran rings around this live action movie. It is like DAY and NIGHT!!! Meaning there is NO COMPARISON....

And another signature of the animation is the soundtrack. From the first frame, the very unique soundtrack grabs you and never lets go until the last frame...

If I use cognac to describe the animations soundtrack, the soundtrack of this is.... drain water???

They did use the original soundtrack at the end of this movie, and again very diluted and too little too late...

So, this movie, is a disappointment...

Just my opinion

My Two Sens

Urghh...this movie is so dull. Like I said before, the good parts in this comes from the visual and world design which was lifted from the anime anyway. The action some which again lifted from the anime become so boring and just style over substance.

As for everything else --- the new story, the new characterization, the acting...fall flat on its face. F U Rupert Sanders.

5/10

But I thought Motoko Kusanagi's character was describe very emotionless, no expression and dull even in any version of the anime? Except for the lesbian sex part in the comic lah. brows.gif

I will give my review later on soonest possible. But my suggestion for GITS fans is you just go watch it. Its because there are many scenes they used as a homage to the original 1995 anime. As for the people who haven't watch it, its up to you guys whether waiting for jack sparrow to give u free or watch it in cinema where you can treat it as a copy of Blade Runner movie.

Correct, I understand where you are coming from

Where I thought they had to deliver a swan lake (dance wise) they delivered an aggressive hip hop.

This is coming from a dude who read all the manga and anime of GITS.
First of all there are multiple version or iteration of GITS.

The Manga works like an anthology of the Section 9 tales. It's goofy and bloody confusing because of the abstract themes by "pseudo science-ing" it with real world theoretical scientific studies. It's usually an abstract concept that being weaved into a story with action and philosophically debating it among the characters. The puppet master is sort of social studying the hacking culture before it even became a thing and they was even a story of growing human organ in a pig farm. So you get the idea it's about reaching the near future phenomenon that being researched at the present. Just that you have a sexy badass protagonist narrating it while the artist gratuitously drew her as revealing as possible.

The 95 anime is all Mamoru Oshii effort to art house the manga to become a respectful anime that can sell to Cannes and Otakus at the same time. It caught on simply we are at the dawn of the internet age at that junction of the anime release. It resonate with people still having to grasp with what the internet is all about and also became an influence to many beloved films by stating the obvious Matrix.

GITS:Innocence which I admit is a shitshow that when a director over indulge his success and came out looking like a wanker. Reminded me a lot of the current Hollywood version.

GITS:SAC is the long running TV series that did the best of both worlds. It's not abstract to a point you need to crack your skull to understand it while have no issue appealing to traditional anime kakis because there's plenty of shooting and the story does move a lot more faster with a smart storyline to boot. SAC=Stand Alone Complex is a fancy word for flash mob before it was even coined. The theme is random individuals with no ties to each other appear at one location at the same time to accomplish a feat. That explain the build up to the climax of the puppet master hack in the storyline.

GITS:Arise is a reboot and rehash to milk more money from the franchise with all the same ideas and themes explored before. Some hits and misses.

Haha, agreed on this. There is one part where Aramaki summon her to his room and the way she walk was so obviously freaking awkward. She is a high tech cyborg where walking should be just like normal human walking but instead it become like an outdated robot. Like I said, if you don't care about the story, plot, characters just watch it and go for IMAX3D if you can afford it. The visual will left you in awe but otherwise its not as engaging as the original anime movies.

Movie strayed from base material = complain

Yeah, I thought that what forum are for. Sharing complaints laugh.gif

Critics are very divisive on this, with those who aren't well versed with the lore pretty much didn't like it or on the fence and so far only see Stuckmann loving it.

5/10

Overall it was a good movie. The visual was awesome. And the concept behind it is still there. Of course you can't adapt a perfectly good movie. But at least it make GITS famous now. It was not super bad like dragon Ball or avatar the last airbender. It was cool n it's the visual that I love.

Only the visual was great.

On other things.... They butchered and mixed up every single thing there is in 1995 movie and GITS:SAC. I was in "WTF" moment from the first minute of this live-adaptation movie from angmoh

I have seen a lot of ppl bashing the show due to scarjo playing Major. But one thing that the movie have captured nicely is the concept that our soul or ghost is what truly define us. Not our skin colour, how we look like or what they refer to as our shell. So I dun see any problem with scarjo as Major. Cause it's just a shell.

Amazing movie nonetheless n if there's no support for it, I guess we won't be able to see much anime in the big screen anytime soon. It's actually a great promotion to the world what anime is. It's more than just cartoon.

I love this movie, especially the visual, personally I think the visual alone worth the admission price.

Only one thing i really felt disappointed, they didn't put that original theme music at opening assembling sequence, it only play out at the end credit, the worse part is : I was expect some super cool design end credit since the whole movie are so visually stunning, but nope... it just the boring plain black background & white text.....

Btw, anyone notice there’s a Malaysian actor in this movie ? the Chinese guy who handcuffed Major at the underground night club, he’s local singer / actor Pete Teo.

Was not aware Hideo Kojima had a movie review column in a magazine. Pretty good read.
http://www.glixel.com/news/hideo-kojima-on...e-shell-w475805

Was compiling reference material for a work related presentation...can't help this very old MV gave me more satisfaction than the movie on a whole. Do check out the director's (Chris Cunningham) other work cause back then his name was as relevant as David Fincher and Mark Romanek in the world of MVs.

Just got the chance to watch this movie, I think I am the only one here who love this movie? The visual is stunning, the original score is mindfck, I love the world setting and how some scene they get it 100% like the anime. Yes I do admit the plot is really simple, but to me it's just perfect. Disappointed not to catch it at the cinema cuz how bad people rate this movie that time. I gave it 4/5. This falls under mindfck scifi movie for me. thumbup.gif
