if upgrade to win 10 and change the proc and mobo, do i need to resintall or refresh back the win 10?

btw my win 8.1 is retail version
*
i think upgrade use refresh.

if use usb flash, then no need, cause will format as part of the process :}

from my testing so far

1. the gui is more cleaner. especially after editing the start tiles, it's doesn't look bad at all.

2. program apps like medic player classic on the top, and the lining makes it look more modern looking.

3. tabbed tasks open and minimize much smoother. i use a samsung 850 pro ssd, so it could also be due to that, but it feels like the animation seems to pay off as well.

4. task view gives you a tile window to show you much clearer all your current background tasks, so you can select them easily. otherwise all the tasks in the bottom bar, if you have too many will be too squished up. so the task view is a godsend.

5. edge aka spartan. this browser is quite fast even compared to chrome. i however did not see any sort of extensions that i'm use to with chrome. maybe their in the webstore, i haven't checked. but as a bare bones browser seems quite capable. but until there is some reliable extensions like umatrix, ublock to handle the spam online, i don't i'd use it.

6. i updated drivers, but oddly it's still saying nvidia drivers need updating. so i had to download microsofts tool that would allow me to skip/hide certain updates. this is needed because it wouldn't let me selectively pick updates otherwise. i don't want to install nvidia drivers when i know for a fact it's already installed and is the latest ^^;

7. though i updated via windows, some of my drivers were out dated. so i updated using IOBITS driver booster. so basically windows as per usual will install standard drivers which just work. but these aren't always the most latest drivers. So use iobits driver booster if you want to ensure your using the latest.

8. what bothers me the most about windows 10 is cortana. to use it, it asks for your location, your browsing habits etc etc... all info that will be sent to microsoft ..... not sure that i'm comfortable with that. i don't do anything fishy online but still i don't like big brother watching over my shoulder either. same reason i don't actively use facebook because i rather not do the data entry for big brother and con artists tongue.gif lel...

9. when i click start > settings i couldn't locate the nvidia control panel. you have to instead right click start menu and access control panel that way. guess thats the only way to reach it. so i added a tile shortcut to start menu for control panel :}

10. what i love best is the startmenu after edited. you can easily access apps compared to 8.1

11. file explorer default to using quick access. so i usually end up manually selecting my pc, and doing search for a file from there. just an extra step doh.gif

12. i'd adjust wifi sense. i rather not connect to anything auto without me explicitly connecting manually myself doh.gif

13. instead of using the default windows firewall, i use windows firewall control. it's an app that is easier to manage which empowers the default firewall app.

14. windows defender i replaced with eset nod32 anti virus.

15. anti malware i use mbam

16. gaming works. i tested hearthstone so far doh.gif but i reckon most modern games are not gonna have issues with windows 10. doesn't feel like this is anything like the disaster known as vista doh.gif

17. no blue bsods. seems rock steady flex.gif

summary:

overall they just refined the OS to make it cleaner, modern and snappier. Some new stuff like cortana, support for biometrics, directx 12 and their new browser edge.

Other than that there not really much. No new filesystem to fix bit rot :{

Maybe there is some enterprise usage to entice corporations to use windows 10. But i didn't really look much into that, but i would suspect they must have done something for that doh.gif

bottomline nothing earthshattering, but i don't see any reason not to use windows 10 especially if you have a legit win 7/8/8.1 which essentially is a free upgrade to win10.

Suppose u should do upgrade first then clean install. I do use this way to clean install setting>update&security>recovery>reset this pc>get started>remove everything.
*
i thought upgrade followed by reset this pc is sufficient for a clean reinstall.

for me i used the usb flash method, so during process i can opt to format my hard drive. so i did that then just install windows 10 on c drive which was quick formated smile.gif

my windows update seems to be seriously bugged... troubleshooting it has become a bit complicating.

end up having to use..... other sources... *cough

to finally be able to install windows 10 >_>;

by the way did anyone else have issues trying to activate using windows 8.1 key in order to active on windows 10 ? because mine didn't work :/

uh? you don't use w8.1 key to activate w10. it will not work. all it matters is that you are doing the upgrade with an activated old os, connected to the internet during the process. after the upgrade, connect to the internet and make sure w10 is activated.

then, you can proceed with a fresh install. after the new installation, connect the computer to internet, and w10 will be activated.
*
well tried a few methods.

firstly was the reserve.

but noticed it wasn't downloading anything

so based on guides used the tool to force jump queue. it made the folders mentioned, but that too didn't seem like it was downloading much after that.

*during the steps i notice windows update had some errors .... these seemed a bit too complicated for me to diagnose and fix by myself.

then used the same tool to download the iso. burned to rufus, wouldn't load on my laptop, both ntfs and fat32.

then tried running the setup.exe while still in win 8.1 it worked, but then asked me for product key. which i found from my laptop by using a vbs script that retrieves the laptop product key (because if your laptop sticker doesn't have key, that is then the only way to retrieve it).

but then says the key is invalid.

so.... i have to use.... alternative iso to install. same issue about flash usb drive not loading (though it worked for my other pc just fine). So i then ran it while in 8.1 and it worked. it didn't ask me for any product key.

win10 installed, but i was concerned that it was not really a clean install. so i then go to settings system restore, then select reset > factory settings.

Now waiting for that to finish smile.gif

the upgrade is supposed to run in normal windows environment. (boot to windows normally, run setup.exe in the usb stick) this is necessary because you need the computer to connect to internet, so that the system can communicate with ms activation server to check the activation status of your old os, and submit the hardware profile.

just skip all dialogs that ask you for key. it's not necessary for the whole upgrade process. after successful w10 online activation, you can just do a diskpart > clean to wipe the whole os drive and proceed with a fresh install.

about bootable usb stick, actually i don't use any tool to create bootable usb stick. for uefi bios, all you need to do is to format the stick with fat32, then extract the contents of w10 iso directly into it. for legacy bios, just format it with ntfs. for my systems, i don't even mark the stick as active. i just spam boot menu key (in my case, f12) on boot and select the usb stick to proceed.
*
after win 10 installed i did the reset factory.

apparently for my acer nitro laptop it reinstalls back as win 8.1 ..... so apparently it does that. lrn new things laugh.gif

so this time around on a fresh 8.1 i immediately get the message i can upgrade to win10. so i click that and now it's downloading win10..

32% so gonna wait and see if when i reach 100% will it install or not hmm.gif

otherwise i got to resort to alternative.... methods rolleyes.gif

do we really need to do a clean install after upgrade from ISO?
if yes, what's the reason we need to do clean install?
*
clean install means the c drive where you install OS will be formated. so starting from scratch. Quick format is fine, as a full reformat i don't think is necessary hmm.gif

can always resort to privazer for deleting traces if paranoid hmm.gif

anyways got so many stuff installed in the old os, so you wouldn't want lingering unused files, to be on. so from a new clean install you got full control of what goes onto your new desktop :}

also saves time pruning irrelevant files from the previous os, apps installed (which you'll have to reinstall by the way using win10 versions of the app if available e.g. graphics driver...)

ok just to report back.

apparently win10 using.... from different sources.... then i proceed to install that then do settings > factory reset (apparently this was unecessary step. could have just done that straight win 8.1)

reinstall back my laptop 8.1 (no disk)

then i could download win 10 again. no errors nothing. just time needed to download doh.gif

got the msg win10 rdy to install.

so anyway if anybody had a same issue like me where win10 would not be downloading because of some unknown error despite troubleshooting and following the guides online, then just do a quick reinstall factory reset, then can dl/install win10 without issues :]

anyway some info on how windows 10 reset works

he questions being asked are good ones as well and make sense. There is concern about being able to clean install Windows 10 on a system that was upgraded for free from Windows 7 and 8.1.

Will I be able to clean install at the moment of upgrade once a license for Windows 7 and 8.1 has been validated?
Will I be able to clean install Windows 10 after upgrading a 7 or 8.1 system with the free upgrade?
Most of the questions out there are about clean installs and this stems from past experiences upgrading older versions of Windows.

Prior to Windows 8, upgrades from one Windows OS to another always seemed to leave behind baggage and issues. Most enthusiasts/prosumers preferred to just reformat their system and then install the new OS on a fresh hard drive - in other words clean.

In the latest Windows 10 Insider Preview it only has the Reset entry however, options under it allow you to keep your files or to remove all files and reinstall Windows. Since logging in with your Microsoft account syncs settings and apps there is no longer a need for those to be saved during the process. This option gives you an opportunity to get a fresh start with Windows 10 - same benefits of what we refer to as a clean install.

In fact, I have used the Reset option on each new Windows Insider Preview build over the last six weeks or so with great success for testing purposes.

why you really should do clean install flex.gif

random pic for the lelz

*update

ok win10 FINALLY INSTALLED.

looking at my recovery options there is
-reset this pc
- go back to windows 8.1 (my acer nitro probably partitioned off part of the hard drive with win 8.1 because they don't give you an actual windows cd. so i'm not gonna mess with that even if i'm not gonna use win 8.1 just because my cd key is in there )
- advanced startup

so i go reset pc.... which then has 2 options
- keep my files
- remove everything (chose this for the obvious reasons to do a clean reinstall)

after this it then prompts another 2 choices to pick
- just remove my files (quick format) * i strongly suggest this
- removing files and clean the drive (long format) *this is only if your selling your pc and giving it away. tbh even that may not be enough. only privazer or active killdisk can properly do a reformat using several passthroughs using a high reformat standard used by nsa or some other professional groups standards.

after this i get a warning message
"this pc was recently upgraded to win 10. if you reset this pc, you won't be able to undo the upgrade and go back to previous version of windows". Sounds fine to me :} lets do eeet

the final message then says "rdy to reset this pc"
reseting will remove
- all personal files and user accounts on pc
- any apps and programs that didnt come with pc
- any changes to settings

PS: i checked action it says windows is activated home edition :}

we don't talk about piracy on the forum smile.gif

that sed, from what i heard.... *COUGH rolleyes.gif

their using a kms activator to emulate to authenticate, and that it works. this is the same as what they did in prior os hmm.gif

The KMS host is the system where you will need to install a key (the KMS key from the Volume License Service Center (VLSC)) and then activate the service. The service is supported on Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008, or Windows Server 2008 R2.

Used the trick to forced it update (wuauctl.exe /updatenow). It manages to download but when install, hit an error 8xxxx002 something. Done twice, give up.

Anyone has this problem??

do reset factory from windows.... when pc starts up go windows update. it will then say you can upgrade to windows.... then will download.

smooth sailing from there smile.gif

pls use this method better http://venturebeat.com/2015/07/29/how-to-d...windows-update/ it will tell you what need to uninstall before the upgrade...most likely you have windows media center installed previously~
*
that method uses the tool i did that didn't work for my case.

my solution for others if ran into update bugs, the easiest method that 100% worked was to just reset factory which basically just reinstalls your current windows os, then the windows update to 10 will work.

this is for win 7/8/8.1 upgrading to windows 10 from a laptop by the way.

anyone having driver issues i suggest you try iobits driver booster. it reliably finds, downloads and installs all the latest drivers on your machine.

there are also other free alternatives. i think intel also has a driver update tool as well doh.gif
