I need to ask you guys some questions before upgrading my Win8.1 to Win10.

1. How can I do clean/fresh install Win10? AFAIK I need to d/l and upgrade my current Win8.1 to Win10 then I can do the clean install. Is it true?

2. So after upgrading from Win8.1 to Win10, does this new Win10 license last forever? There're a lot of confusions, some reports say upgraded windows users can only enjoy Win10 for one year, sorta like limited time free trial, but some claim that as long as you upgrade your Win8.1 to Win10 within one year, you can use Win10 forever. So which on is true?

3. I'm thinking to do a whole PC upgrade next year and will do a clean install for it, how does the Win10 handle for new PC configurations assuming the Win10 already activated?

Thanks.

1.Yes.

2.The one year mean one year left to upgrade, and there isn't any conformation on using windows 10 forever..

3.If your hardware are good with windows 8.1 it will be good for 10.

What I mean is that changing PC hardwares. I thought you need to call microsoft for verification if you change your current pc setup too much, maybe the Win10 license that I own only registers previous hardware setup, but not the brand new PC setup.

Change motherboard =  You WILL need to contact
Change Ram/Card = Don't really need to do that

Ok one more question, when I upgrade to Win10, will microsoft give me a brand new cd key for Win10? Or I just use back the original Win8.1 cdkey in case it needed when installation?

There is no cd key anymore. Microsoft check activation by hardware id now.

Hardware ID? Does it mean that I can't use the Win10 license on a brand new PC, since hardware ID will not be the same?

It doesn't say anything about reusability of Win10 license on other PC, but since this upgrade is free it makes sense that limited use of Win10 license, maybe if I buy the retail copy it'll be different story.

tie with your motherboard ID. so if you change your mobo, juz call up to MS center, provide them the product key and some info and they will provide you the code to activate your window again.
MS call center is very helpful and efficient to solve your problem biggrin.gif

Just the same with current call for new windows activation, thanks.

you can use w10 key on another machine provided it's a retail key. call ms support when you do that for reactivation.

How can I get my w10 key then? Do you mean w8.1 key=win10 key?

you don't. at least for free upgrade offer, you don't need any key. the new ms activation server collects your hardware profile, so the next time you do a w10 fresh install on the same computer, you just skip all the places that ask for key, and your computer will be activated automatically when it's connected to the internet.

for your records however, you should keep that old key.

When u said I should keep my old key, do u mean that I need the old key to call microsoft and reactivate for my next new PC?

Just start upgrading my W8.1 to W10, but keep getting errors if I upgrade from Windows Update. I did download the media creation tool and created an installation copy in my USB pendrive, so should I just rerun the media creation tool again and choose the upgrade PC option? All I want is that my PC activates on MS server so I can do clean install later, but I don't know what's the status of my current w8.1 license key since it doesn't show. Anyone?
