Hi all. Am wanting to buy Tamron 90mm VC for canon mount since I am into macro shooting.. But due to the high price, it seems unjustifiable for me to invest for a lens that is specifically for macro shooting only.. a quick online check tells me that it is used for portraiture shot as well (but I am not really into that for now).

Is macro lens suitable for, say street photography, landscape shooting too?

Street photography might be possible.

But landscape, I don't think so. Not wide enough.

You are right, a macro lens is not only capable of taking up-close shots, most of the time people use them to take portraits and a litle bit of wildlife/birding as well nod.gif
A long macro lens like the 90mm is not really suitable for landscape since it is very narrow- you won't be able to get much of the wonderful view into your frame laugh.gif

As for street photography, I suppose it is possible though there are better (and lighter) alternatives icon_rolleyes.gif

the same question has been ask before with a lot of replies, TS should search for that topic for better answers.

that being said, a macro lens is very capable to shoot a lot of things, probably the most "usable" lens for various field.

landscape doesn't mean wide, it can be shoot with various focal length, just that most people prefer wider shots smile.gif

Street photography is okay..dpends on distance between u n what u want to shoot..prime lenses teach u a lot about how to frame well. :)

of course you can use it for other purpose, just that the auto focus will be slower as it adjust from near to far

depends on lens. a lot newer macro lens has Focus Limiter to prevent the lens from hunting all the way 1:1 to infinity.

the output of the photo is you to decide. i shot landscape in form of close up with 70200. why not? i even did use my fisheye to shoot macro too (because the fish eye has 8cm mfd from sensor)
there is no written rules that any lens can do this cant do that. its just that it may hinder you from getting what you wan, or harder journey to master a category with a difficult lens.

dont let people's ideals stop you from doing thing different.

btw aud under 500 is damn cheap...

If you're gonna use it for street, then just flip the focus limiter switch over to 0.5m-∞.
If macro, then flip it to 0.3m-0.5m.

If you don't limit it, it might take some time to lock in your focus.

It is suitable to do anything you want for the focal length of 90mm and f2.8. The limitations are how you approach this focal length pretty much. I have the Tamron 90mm non VC and Non USD so the autofocus to me is similar to the nifty fifty Canon 50mm F1.8.
