I supposed it depends on your investment plan and risk appetite.

If you are a short to medium term Gold trader, it may be a good idea to buy paper gold.
However, if you are looking to use Gold investment as a super long term, hedge against financial system, you will want those physical bullions.
Granted there is a storage cost, but this is an investment allocation that sits outside of the financial system.

In the super long term, a financial collapse is likely.
Holding your gold held by a financial institution is as good as having a deposit with a bank.
There will be bank runs or they may freeze withdrawal of your assets in that event.
