Any advice on root canal treatment for the second molar?

I have just had my impacted wisdom tooth extracted and the dentist told me that the second molar is slightly damaged (small cavity at the back) due to the impact from the wisdom tooth over the years.

So, is root canal treatment always effective in saving the tooth?

And one question that puzzles me is that I have had some dull ache after my wisdom tooth was extracted. So far the pain has gone away after two weeks.

So, the nagging question is that whether the dull ache was due to dry socket or due to the toothache from the second molar. I can't pinpoint either.
*
Hi, if you don't mind me asking what's your age? And I don't think reasonable answers can be given without access to your X-ray records.

P/s: the dull aching pain is definitely not dry socket.

Oh and sorry precise dental, since it was a general helping post I just tried to help smile.gif

Was quoted 120 for scaling + polishing, which is within the range. Though shouldn't polishing be done after scaling, i.e. no choice but have to do?
so not sure why the clinic quote me that, as I can choose one without the other.
*
Polishing is not a must, but most dental clinics offer it as a combo, the main reason is well... money but, after scaling your teeth will be slightly rough, therefore polishing helps smoothen out those roughness and your teeth will appear nicer too. At most clinics they offer it together anyways so if you wanna opt out of polishing mostly they will tell you only scaling is the same anyways or they might reduce like very small amount that will make you get the polishing anyways. My thoughts just get the polishing, your teeth will look nicer and your tongue wont keep wandering over your teeth and slight uneasy feeling for couple of weeks due to the roughness(this will subside on its own).

Aha, figures! Yeah, I think it'd be best to follow the dentist's advise after all. And the discomfort just to pinch on money, doesn't seem to be worth it.
Anyways, just wondering; can receding gums be reversed?
*
Depends on the amount of recession, they have grading, if its just the beginning stages just scaling and maintaining would help it recover but if its a little more severe then there are other treatments to be done because there is a limit to where the gums can grow back on their own. Nevertheless most important is making sure the gums dont recede in the first place, so get it checked and know the cause of the recession then only it can fully be recovered.

Noted on the advice, will pay a visit to the dentist soon. However, is there medical treatment to restore gums, and/or diet to do that?
i'm concern that it'd be time before the gums began to recede further and can no longer hold the teeth.
*
Yup there are various treatment, if its possible better go and see a periodontist (specialist in gums) I'm not too sure about the price but they might have better idea of what kind of treatment that can be done for you.

I have been having 'itchy' teeth/gums for the last couple of days. Having the need to massage my gums with my tongue, and this feeling that I can't clench my teeth properly (as if some of the teeth are misaligned). Is there a way to treat this and/or to minimize the effect?
*
Yeah that happens because of subgingival calculus and you might need deep scaling, really depends on how it looks so I cant say for sure. smile.gif

I have a wisdom tooth . Do you think i should removed it.
There was one time, i think had an infection and feel very pain. The dentist requested me to go to University Malaya hospital to extract. Should i just leave it or removed it.

The only thing that worries me is the future infection and also causing cancerous cell .
*
Wisdom tooth as such don't cause any problems, only when they're impacted(doesn't come out fully into its 'normal' position) where they can cause problems and the most common is infection followed by pain, usually it is adviced that if your wisdom tooth has already been infected and there was a history of pain to get it removed due to the fact that the same problem will recur again and again.

Future infection yes, actual infection causing cancer is highly unlikely.

My toddler 5 years old this year. Her bottom front tooth got 2.. front and back. why is that?
*
Most probably her permanent teeth are starting to come out and the primary/baby teeth are infront and will soon get loose and fall by itself by the time he/she is 6+ years old.

QUOTE(missysleepy @ Jun 29 2018, 01:54 PM)
im not sure when should i be doing it. scared if now not doing it, after aged only do it ,will it be more dangerous for the heart?
u remember the brother in law of zahid who died of complication ? he died because of heart attack when performing the anesthetic to remove the wisdom tooth.
*
There's no correlation with age and getting wisdom tooth extracted, only if you have any underlying medical condition of which you should mention before undergoing and treatment in a dental clinic.

And the case of patient dying during wisdom tooth removal due to anesthetic complication is due to the fact that the patient did not reveal complete history and he consumed drugs that had severe reactions with the anesthesia, therefore it is important to reveal any underlying medical condition that you have/ any drugs/medications that you consumed.

Is root canal treatment painful?

Has anyone undergone that before?
*
Root canal treatment can be slightly uncomfortable/sensitive/painful during the first seating(assuming the dentist does a good job) and no more pain whatsoever on subsequent seating/appointments if it is a multiple seating root canal treatment.

After the first session of root canal treatment and before the second session, can a patient eat as normal as in eating hard food on that side?
*
Most of the time you could but highly dependant on cases

Cases where there was existing infection, I would not recommend biting too hard on that side,

And also do remember in between appointments the dentist will most probably only use a temporary restoration material to cover up for ease of access later on, so eating normally is ok, but not hard food like peanut/bones etc as it would probably cause dislodgement of the filling

So, it's best to have shorter appointments in between?

Compared to what I have read in this thread that some ppl have appointments months between.
*
Not too long, not too short again its highly dependant on the situation and condition of the teeth, but I would prefer anywhere from 2 weeks to one month at the most for the second seating.

And did your dentist advice on a crown for the tooth after root canal?

I don't remember what he said.

It was two years ago that he recommended me to go for root canal treatment because the wisdom tooth had damaged the next molar. The wisdom tooth had been removed, anyway.

At that time, he said no need to do root canal treatment yet unless you start to feel some toothache.

I have also been visiting him regularly for dental treatment. So far no problem until recently.

On and off recently, I have felt some throbbing sensation. So, I believe it's time to start the treatment.

So, I believe putting the crown is part of the procedure?
*
Yeah an important part too, because what happens when we do a root canal treatment is 'killing' the tooth to retain its function and functions of its surrounding structures, and the main aim is to alleviate the pain, but with this the tooth becomes 'dead' and tends to get fragile over the years, it's not instant but in years to come the teeth will start chipping off/ breaking off piece by piece.

Therefore a crown is highly suggested to maintain the root canal treated tooth and to save time and money for you(long run). I know crown with a root canal could be expensive, you could opt for a crown at around 1-2 years after the root canal is completed, 2 years being the absolute maximum.

It would be better if i do the crowning as soon as possible, right?

How long is the recommended time length to do crowning after root canal is completed?
*
Yep, typically give it around 2-3 months to make sure there's no problem with your root canal, but different dentists have different views so best consult your doctor on that smile.gif

have you heard of some cancer docs have relate root canal procedures that could caused cancer due to bacteria inhibition in the root canal after that?
*
There are absolutely no relation in between having dental caries/ infection with cancer.

Severe bacterial infection which can lead to other infections yes but not cancer.

QUOTE(lowlowc @ Jul 10 2018, 08:01 AM)
If the dentist suggested that you remove it at hospital, it might be the removal will require surgery - cut a large opening at gum/ need to crush the teeth and remove pieces. Get a referral letter from him to bring to UM hospital to see dental surgeon.

If your wisdom teeth causes pain now and then, or after years still wont come out (but dentist confirm the tooth is under the gum) dont wait. Just remove them. I suffered 2 years for my left side and 5 years on right side on and off pain, for nothing. Dentists kept asking me to wait and they will come out. BS. After removal, felt so relieved.
*
I'm sorry for what you had to go through, but at the first sign of pain/infection it is best to remove the tooth as the problem would keep repeating.

i read before on Dr Mercola statement about root canal having high possibility of germ trapped in between the encapsulation and it spreaded through the blood vein. One of the cancer caused is also bacteria formation over the years. Dr Mercola is quite popular in the health research but this doubt were not been approved by the Dental Societies i think. It's still infant i guess to conclude this discovery without further test but i think there is a level of possibility in percentage i guess. I know a person very well who did a root canal and are now suffering from cancer .
*
As far as the literature goes none of the infections nor dental materials used in root canal are carcinogenic whatsoever. If it was it wouldn't have been so widely practiced.

The levels of possibilities of percentage getting cancer from certain things will always be there, I walk around getting secondary smoking also am at a high prevalence to get lung cancer.

The case of someone you know suffering cancer I highly doubt it's solely caused by the root canal, as far as it goes cancer involves many factors with genetics, daily habits and current health condition contributing a higher factor.

So to answer the question in a simple manner no root canal does not cause cancer.

never been to dentist for quite some time already.
but recently saw ads on whitening treatment etc..  while passing by the clinic

i wonder if whitening is like 2 in 1 actions? means indirectly have the same effect as scaling

p/s: guessing from the perspective of whitening as dissolving / corrosive  <-- true/false??
*
Sadly teeth whitening has been a big sensation in recent times since everyone is obsessed with looking good. I wouldn't really recommend whitening unless you really need it.

Teeth whitening doesn't clean your teeth, but most practices do scaling before the whitening procedure itself as a standard procedure.

Teeth whitening uses acid, it's a very low concentration of acid but still can cause sensitivity. Doesn't really corrode your teeth at that concentration.

QUOTE(lowlowc @ Jul 11 2018, 01:50 PM)
Problem is there are many dentists who thought that as long as the wisdom tooth is not impacted, they are ok. Even if infected, they will only give antibiotic and paracetamol to endure it until it pass.
I went to at least 3 dentist/dental surgeon until the last one, I insisted no, I don't want to wait anymore. Take it out now!  rclxub.gif
*
True that there are a few other less invasive treatments depending on the tooth position before resorting to extraction.

But it can't be treated with constantly giving antibiotics only.

Need advise.

My dentist referred me to a few endodontist for root canal.
The x ray shows that my root is getting shorter which means most likely my front tooth is non vital.

However the price charged for the recommended endodontist is RM 2900 per tooth. Is it normal range for root canal out there?
I heard crowning is required as well after root canal. How does the procedure goes? They quoted me RM 2900 but i am not sure if it includes crowning.
Is it a must to do crowning?
*
Hi there,

How many tooth is require for root canal? The price is on the high side, but pricing vary among dentists, severity of tooth condition, and also any existing problems that may complicate treatment.

Sometimes charges for root canal include crown also.

Yes crown is mandatory because tooth usually becomes brittle/fragile after some time.

My son has just started his braces. Appreciate from those who have been through that or are still under treatment, your best 2 advice on must do and 2 advice on must not do.

Learn from others rather than learning it himself from mistakes.

Thanks.

Hi,

I've not undergone any braces treatment myself but I'm a dentist so I guess I can give some advice.

1. Cleanliness is everything, it might be hard but your orthodontist/dentist should explain about methods of brushing when having braces on.

2. Try not to eat hard or sticky food as this may cause dislodgement of brackets.

3. In any case bracket Is dislodged try to get an appointment as early as possible as that may cause unwanted changes in tooth movement.

4. Slight pain or tenderness is normal, ulcerations are normal, you can request for orthodontic waxes to be put on the brackets to prevent the ulcerations.

5. Try to minimise heavy staining drinks such as coffee or soft drinks as they may accelerate staining on the teeth.

That's all I can think off for now, if you have specific questions I'll be more than happy to answer.

Well then that's entirely up to the dentist who saw your teeth and his/her treatment plan. But that is expensive for a single tooth root canal.

Well again, most clinics don't include the prices together as not to scare the patients away with high prices. That's just a maybe and your dentists treatment plan may vary. You should ask them about the crown.

Hi all, was scrolling through web and LYN but can't seems to get a definite answer.

1)Is there any risk to teeth health if I were to do whitening at dentist?

2)Usually how long does it last?(Some said 1/2 to 2 years)
*
Hi jackycrazy,

1) Simple answer is yes. Because teeth whitening uses acid, acids creates microporosities, therefore immediate response after whitening is usually sensitivity. But in most clinic they do give a gel that contains high amounts of fluoride to remineralize those microporosities.

2) The lasting effects of whitening highly depends on your habits and maintainence. Try to avoid staining food and drinks. And it may last anywhere from 1/2 - 3 years.

Hi firezyy,

Sounds like you have calculus forming, you should get it checked and get scaling done. It could either be calculus or caries. But most likely calculus.
