Does it drain the battery excessively?
On CM14.1 it even light up the ambient display when in pocket.

Not at all. I just enabled the wave on proximity sensor, leaving the other 2 (pick up and shake) sensors off.

I opened the phone back last time to change the volume button. Battery also easy to be changed once you open the back. Ifixit have a very clear guide.

But try using custom rom first. Last time after I try custom rom the battery last much better.

Can search at garage sales, sure there's people that offer such service.

Or you can check ifixit to see if it complicated to change the battery yourself. If not then you can order the battery online and change yourself.
