Lastly, there's the Sony Xperia Z3. Its supposedly great camera turned out to be not so great against other leading phones, with poorer details, duller colors, and mediocre low-light performance. Is the phone's automatic mode to blame?

i highly believe in manual settings than automatic settings.

auto mode seriously that bad?
I try with the camera with the moto G 1...
moto G turn out the colour more sharp.
look like I need to try the manual mode.

because automatic setting varies a lot, even a DSLR's auto setting can screwed up sometimes. so if you are a good photographer, manual setting is highly recommended.

It is the AF issue actually
if you have experience using DSLT before you would understand the advantage and how sharp it is on manual mode.

For a non photographers IPhone 6 is the best choice. You can just leave it in Auto mode & it will delivered it for you. Whereas Z3 need some manual tweaking first to get the best result. Hope Sony will optimised the Auto setting with new firmware.

my preference with manual (as of Z2) :

Exposure - -0.5 under sunlight. never increase the exposure more than +0.5 as it will result in grainy photo.
ISO - leave Auto or set at least ISO 100-400 if you are under sunlight. ISO 1600 is good for night shots without grain.

i will post more for better usages. need to make more experiment with Z3.

I owned this phone for almost 3 weeks already and the photo quality is still not so good. Sometime can see some snowy image on the edge of your photos which i really dont like.

Yup, this i agreed but I thought that it's depending on the focused object and it blurred the background?

That is macro shot. Macro functions to focus on near objects but blurs further objects.
Somehow yes, the focus is kinda slow, so that's why I use touch focus.
